2013 ANDRA Battery Location Rules

Having just received my 2013 ANDRA rulebook, I noticed a change to the battery location and encasement rules
It now reads:
"Dry Cell or LiPo batteries may be located in the driver's compartment area providing they are encased in a sealed box that is securely mounted to the vehicle and vented externally of the vehicle. Box must be made of a minimum 3mm aluminium (or other material equal or of greater strength) and may have a panel or lid fitted for access providing the lid or panel has an air tight seal and is securely fastened to the box"
So from now on, ANY battery in the passenger compartment must be fully sealed whereas previously, only wet cell batteries had to be fully enclosed
Hope this helps - H

Yeah, that's why I put it up, Ben
As the rule book is such riveting reading (not!), I'll have a look to see if I can find any other hiccups to those competing in Feb. - H

Is that for all cars or just for those faster than 11.99?

As it is in the general regulations of the rule book, it would apply to all vehicles.

Remember also, the rule book is issued to Licence Holders who have a permanent ANDRA racing number therefore, presumably, a "race" car

It also states that all "wet cell" batteries must be located outside the driver or passenger cpmpartment

I would be foolish to speculate as to wether this applies to the casual VW racer in February 2013, as I feel this would be a question of the Promoter (Craig) to the Management of WSID
The initial post was more directed at the many non registered vehicles that i have noticed at the VW Drag events which, I presume, will be strutinised more closely than true registered vehicles.

Dave, the percentage of registered vehicles with the battery in the driver's compartment at street meets is miniscule!
As I stated in a previous post, I believe it is more aimed at unregistered vehicles i.e. vehicles that have not been checked by Authorised Inspectors of some type

There goes my snappy new battery mount then.... :(
Sealing and venting a battery to the atmo from inside the car (a basically streetable VW in this case) it next to impossible.
Would mounting the battery in the spare wheel well consitute 'outside of the cabin'?... A heap of cable would be needed to mount the battery up there... And presents more weight.... Maybe I could mount the battery under the car alongside the transaxle?

Hmmmmm....

Cheers for sharing Henry.

with a battery like the one you have, you could just stick it in your pocket and no one would even know its there!

if you are going to use a similar battery to Humpty, there is not much of a weight advantage to be shifting around as well as routing, securing and insulating extra cable, .
What about mounting the battery onto the rear torsion tube?

Its not that hard. I made my box to the old spec so just need to seal it and run a breather. A sealed box is easier than running long cables and less weight.

Exactly what I was thinking.... Nice short cables and the battery is outside the cabin.
