reliable and honest mechanic in syd
Hey all,
Just bought my first beetle, am so excited however the run home wasn't the most pleasant. I think its only running on 2 cylinders and its got a whole
in the exhaust.
Was wandering if some1 could recommend a vw specialist who's honest and fair in Sydney prefer in the northern suburbs. Want some1 to look over it and
tell me what the problems are.
Cheers

May have been better to have had a mechanic tell you wants wrong before you bought it !!! Andrew Dodd is at North Rocks if that helps.

its a 1964, i think ? and a 1300 . I found the whole in the exhaust , was just a loose nut on the exctrators. I changed the leeds cause 2 of them had
a small spark compared to the other two however still running like a dog. The plugs look new too but i know i should change them.
Any ideas y its running on 2 or 3 cylinders. Points look good too. Do you guys think it could be the carby ?

Hi
Normally, I would say no to new plugs..
but I just had a bad plug...
never seen one before.. tests OK.. but an old Bosch plug
works OK...
If You change the plugs just remember to tell the mechanic so they aren't replaced again... lol
the Solex carby on Your beetle, it has an accelerator pump which makes it go, by spraying more fuel into the throat..
no petrol leaking from carby??
what sort of air cleaner is it??
the small chromed air cleaner or an original VW oil bath type..??
try it with the small air filter OFF, as it may be restricting the air unless it has a good clean paper element
which You can buy... [a local uses them]
when You say the points are good?
have you checked the gap in them?
or checked the timing? as it may be out..
the ignition timing changes as the points wear down
[the rubbing block on the points] plus the condensor can't do its job correctly when the gap changes..
wipe inside the distributor cap with WD40 or similar
or methylated spirits etc.. plus around the coil etc..
Good You checked the spark plug leads.. the carbon or silicon leads do break down... and can be broken easily too..
cheers

its a 30 spits -1 ? i don't think there is a leak in the carby, and it is original vw oil bath. That wouldn't make it run on just 2 or 3 cylinders
would it? That's why im thinking something electrical.
