that pan is looking great ian. should handle much better than anything with a torsion frontend. I assume you be putting in ali panels on floor to keep
the weight down?
just curious, why did you go oxyboxer? (great choice though) but I thought you had a really good block on the last motor?

The last motor was a 2332 and used a brasilian magnesium case. It was good for what it was but wouldnt handle well above 300hp. This oxy boxer is good
for 500hp easy. I also purcahsed a CB alloy case, and when doing a few modifications (welding to change the way some of the oil galleries work),
parts of the case just started colapsing with porosity. That left me with a pretty shakey confidance factor for that case.
Oxy boxer has a lot of advantages. My 2443 will drop right in, but i can easily up that to a 96 or 97mm bore and have 2.6lt. I may still be
purchasing some autocraft heads for the engine yet. The engine build is still a fair ways off so i'll worry about that then.
Floor panels were going to be alloy but im now thinking carbon fiber would work well as well. It wont oxidise and looks good too. Why not go all
out...
So ime done working for the day, time to go put some painted parts on the chassis. Expect some pics to be uploaded tonight.
Cheers,
Ian

Ok another update...
Rear suspension is now back on the car. I should have spent more time making a better gearbox rear mount because one of the nuts took an hour to do
up with an open ended spanner because Ive used nylock nuts on the mounts. Other than that all is going well.
So tomorrow is CV's and spring plates and thats pretty much it for the chassis till more parts are ready. Ive got to get the brake calipers bead
blasted and re-paint them next week, and I also need some new torsion housing bushes which I will order next week. I think I'll have to clean up my
workshop instead too because its a shambles at the moment.
Cheers,
Ian

Im kind of torn between classic red or original black for the calipers. I think the yellow looks good on the 996 monoblock calipers, but not the
early 3 piece brembo's...
The calipers are being bead blasted this week and will be painted on the weekend.
I completely re-organised my workshop over the weekend and cleared off my engine building bench to get ready for the trial assembly which I will be
doing this week.

Thanks Westi. Ive been holding off on the motor for a few reasons mainly waiting the arrival of the case, but also so I would finish the chassis
properly. But... the "business end" of the deal started today.
For starters I've just put the crank and new bearings in the case with 2 rods to see if it all clears and rotates with no issues and it all looks
good. On each side of the rear main you can see ive had to shave a little more of an angle to clear the more extreme radius on the mains that the
flanged crank I am running has. Ive also set the end float... and that was it for today.
I cant do a full build of the engine yet as ive got to get a few more things balanced. Thats going to take a few weeks to get sorted out, but i'll be
plastigauging the mains tomorrow and checking cam-crankl clearances then too. Then its time to finish the body so I can start to put some of these
larger pieces together again.
I got the CV's re-installed and rear swaybar mounts done as well.
Thats all for now.

They are actually toyota camry sway bar links. They are cadnium plated 10mm high tensile. The ball joint and rod are angled such that suspens travel
is going to keep the rod at 90 degrees to the sway bar mount, so it should be ok. I think they only like tiny because everything else around it is
engineered overkill.
But I am contemplating changing the threadded rod part to a grade 12 allen head bolt, so it doesnt have a thread the entire length of the link, which
where it would most likely bend. I was supposed to make it to a fasteners shop today but didnt quite make it that far. Unfortunatly my work gets in
the way of my play sometimes...

Hi Everyone,
Time for an update again...
Well ive completed two trial assemblies of the bottom end of the engine so far and checked bearing and rotating clearences etc. All is looking good so
the bearings are being sent off to be coated with competition coatings. Dave from LN Engineering has sent me a floater plate for my twin plate clutch
system so thats a couple of steps closer to having the engine sorted out. Rod penrose is having a set of barrels machined to match my CP pistons
perfectly, and thats about all the news on the engine front.
Ive now finished 99% of the chasssis. This weekend ive changed the rear sway bar mounts and re-painted and fitted up the brake calipers. All the
brake lines are finished. Next is getting some custom Ebrake cables made, securing the brake and clutch lines along the length of the chassis, and
makes some floor pan panel sections. All in all its looking pretty sexy.
Here are the pics.
Thats all for now.
Cheers,
Ian

Sorry guys ive had a very busy week with work and also 1/2 tuned a friends 13B and a re-tuned my GTR to get some better fuel economy.
As far as the my VW project goes, i have made 3 of the 6 pieces of floor pan section in carbon fibre sheeting. Then I ran out of resin which i
purchased more of today. The parts ive made look very nice, but need to be 2 pack clear coated before being glued to the chassis. The firewall
framework sections inside the car are having some sheet metal cut for them this week, so I can finish that off soon too. I collected my balanced
pistons from the machine ship today, so all I need is cylinders back from Rod and I can begin the final engine assembly.

Hi,
Yes its been a while since ive made noticable progress on the car. Again I spent 1/2 this weekend fine tuning a friends rotary, but that should be
over and done with now. The same guy is a boilermaker by trade and will be making my new turbo header up for me. His welding is like artwork.
Current engine things in the works are my main bearings are still at competition coatings, and my new cylinders for the engine should arrive this
coming week.
I did make some progress this weekend with the car. Where all the metal was cut out of the back of the shell and a new firewall section was framed up
is now all paneled in with sheet metal. Ive also trimmed the edges and re-enforced them all with 20x20x3 angle along the back of the firewall, and
20x3 flat bar down the inside of the wheel well. This has restored the structual integrity of the car so the entire back end is nice and rigid again
now.
Before
After
Ive made 1/2 the carbon fibre floor panels for the chassis too, but stupidly managed to smash my piece of glass I was laying it up on today. So next
week I'll have to purchase another sheet to make the remaining pieces. It might be overkill a little, but for those that havent seen the rest of the
interior here's a photo to refresh your memories, and also a sneek preview of whats to come...
The floor panel sections are 3 layer carbon, 2 layer glass, very light, and i can stand on it and not fall through so its strong enough. I wouldnt
want to jump on it though..
More updates to come. Hopefully make a lot of progress tomorrow.
Cheers,
Ian

Hi Guys,
No engine progress still as the bearings are still at competition engineering. Aparently the guy that does the work has been in hostpital.
So ive gotten stuck into the body again this weekend. Welded up the holes I blew through the body sheet metal when welding in the re-enforcing bars
etc and have now got a layer of 2 pack etch prmer on all the metal. All in all im pretty happy with how its progressing. Ive started on the guards
again now too, which will have to be finished on the car before I can spray inside the guards etc black.
Here are the pics...
More progress will happen tomorrow...

Hi everyone,
I am so over messing around with fiberglass. Sand, glass, grind, shower, itch itch itch, repeat. Fortunatly the guards are now about 90% perfect. I
just need to trim back the edges a little and then have my panel beater mate finish the guards off. Here are the latest pics... Still not in primer,
but at the curves are now all right and the thickness of the guards is even accross the jointed area's.
This means I get to start on engine assembly this weekend. Prepare yourselfs for some serious engine porn Reub!

Hi All,
Well engine build is still on hold waiting for rod bearings bolts. Closer inspection of my teflon coated bearings showed they had dust in the
coating, so when they were sprayed with the coating the teflon coating was contaminated. Ive decided to run without the coating on the rod bearings
now. The mains are all coated and are fine.
I have tracked down my panel beater/spray painter mate and now have him working for me daily for as long as it takes to finish the body. The
diference that having a professional working on the car makes is huge. I'd done a pretty good job of putting flat spots all over the guards so thats
being fixed first.
Ive also stripped out the rest of the car and have decided to re-spray the entire shell again. You may ask why because it did look pretty good. Fact
is though the touch up job that was done to it 2+ years ago resulted in the panel shops apprentices damaging quite a few areas, intruducing new flaws
when they fixed the old ones, and also the entire back of the car from just behind the doors has dust in the clear coat. So im hunting for a new
colour too. Im looking at some of the careera GT colour range at the moment.
So here is a few pics of the progress...
Stripped out...
Thin layer of rage gold filler over the guards and gaps al corrected.
This is an adjustable hinge support made from welding a headstud nut to the standard hinge bolt. Adjusting the long bolt pushes the hinge forward and
supports the weight of the luggage lid better.
And the result of this.... is that the gaps are now 100 x better than they were...
Should have daily progress for the next few days all going well.
Cheers,
Ian
