mike i was lined up with him in first run but all of a sudden i was sent down by myself and than they spilt the class up so the 3 wild bunch vws raced each other

Ben , Well done , it looks like all of the new parts and time is starting to really pay off . This would make you # 5 in the 9 second club if I am correct . I wonder if the boss is a little pissed that you are now faster than him , ROD.

thanks mate , the dedication I have for my teams cars only gets stronger with each and every obstacle that gets in our way ......

on thursday afternoon we put Bens supercharged drag bug on the dyno to set the tune with the new larger 50% overdriven crank pulley fitted . After several runs the air / fuels were still inconsistant , the boost was at 25-26psi , and I catch a glimpse of a spark coming out between the head and barrel at No.2 cylinder . Off the dyno and back to WPVW to remove the head for inspection .

thursday night the head is removed and a crack is evident at the top barrel spigot again , however this time no damage to the cylinder head or headstuds .

friday night the barrel is replaced again and it is decided to put the smaller 20% overdriven crank pulley back on that we used at Warwick , to ensure a safer tune .

saturday we put Bens bug back on the dyno and set a very FAT , but safe tune with 298hp@ the wheels and 1530lbs tractive effort . Back to WPVW and we then replaced the 23mm rear torsion bars in Bens bug with new 28mm ones . We also modify the parachute mount and lift it 5" higher , pack all of our gear for the racing at WSID and head home at 9pm .

the rest is history.......

WPVW race report for Nostalgia Drags 2012


WPVW had a great day at the 2012 Nostalgia drags. We arrived at WSID at approx 7am to greet the guys from CBB and Henry Spicak. Shortly after Steve Muller arrived with his roo-shooter splitty .

Cars were all scrutineered OK and we lined up for our 1st run in the staging lanes. Ben Ford and Chris Bolton were at the front of the line when Benny Gatt came to the staging lanes in his Ford XB 2000hp doorslammer. It was to our surprise that Benny Gatt did not want to race against us, or any VW for that matter ..... probably due to Ben Ford flogging him in the finals last year.

Chris Bolton has his qualifying run with a pass of 10.30@127.25mph , a new PB for Chris .

Ben Ford has his qualifying run with a pass of 10.10@129.88mph , a new PB for Ben also .

Then we find out that the 'wild bunch' boys didnt want to run with us so the VW's were taken out of their class and put into a new class of their own 'VW Nostalgia' , for turbo and supercharged VW's .
Apparently the reason given for ejecting the VW's from the 'wild bunch' was the speed difference between the cars ....... which I found really funny as Ben Ford was running consistant high 9's @ 130+ mph and I saw a Cortina with a supercharged / injected engine run 11.3 @110mph and saw the quick cars in the final doing 150mph , less than 20mph more than Ben Ford was running all day . I just think they got scared after last year .... its all Ben Fords' fault .

So the VW Nostalgia class consisted of 3 cars only . Ben Ford in the WPVW supercharged bug , Chris Bolton in the WPVW turbo bug and Shane Hobson in the CBB supercharged buggy .

The format was Chicago Shootout ....
Round-1 ...... Chris Bolton vs Shane Hobson , Ben Ford bye .
Chris Bolton wins with a 10.81@109.43 on a 10.27 dial-in , against Shane Hobson 11.4 on a 10.99 dial-in . Ben Ford runs a 10.19@131.06 on a 10.0 dial-in .

Round-2 ...... Ben Ford vs Shane Hobson , Chris Bolton bye .
Shane Hobson wins with a 11.4 on a 10.99 dial-in as Ben Ford not only red-lights by 0.075sec , but he runs another new PB of 9.90@132.27 on a 10.0 dial-in . Chris Bolton runs a 10.65@124.59 with clutch slip from the start line , on a 10.27 dial-in .

Round-3 ...... Ben Ford vs Chris Bolton , Shane Hobson bye .
Ben Ford wins with a 9.92@133.71 on a 9.8 dial-in as Chris Bolton breaks out , hard on the brakes with a 10.49@108.55 on a 10.50 dial-in . Chris was doing 103mph at half track and just 108mph over the line . Shane Hobson does a new PB with 10.94 on his 10.99 dial-in to acheive his first 10sec pass . Well done Shane and the crew at CBB .

That left all 3 competitors with 2 wins each , with Ben Ford the only one not breaking out in the last round . So Ben Ford gets 1st in class and Chris Bolton gets 2nd in class for closest to dial-in .

A big congratulations go to Henry Spicak for his win in the 'street machine' class and well done to Steve Muller for bringing out the roo-shooter and putting on a good show . Steves' day ended a little early as he munched a tranny . Also to Russell Sarton from CBB in his N/A drag bug , well done on a new PB of 12.4 . Great to see all of the VW's out there in action , the crowd certainly loves them.....Many thanks to all the crew at WPVW for their assistance on the day .

unlike you Rod that puts yourself before anyone else , I put everyone else around me first .

my turbo oval has been out of action for almost 4 months whilst I have concentrated on assisting Ben Ford in rebuilding his bug so that he can go much quicker and safer . In the past I have done the same for Chris Bolton also .

we have purchased many parts for Bens bug in recent times as you mentioned , and it has been a great pleasure to deal with people that have respect for us .

why would I be pissed when Ben gets into the 9sec bracket before I do ? one day you might have a friend , and if he trusts you enough to let you help build and develop a drag bug for him , and he does as well as Chris Bolton & Ben Ford are doing , then you too will experience the awesome feeling I do when I see my team members / mates do so well ....

Well , Wayne , you seem to take offence at my comment . I mean no disrespect to you , but you have been drag racing a long time and a lot longer than Ben , and to have someone new at racing do so well is such a short time is pretty good for Ben . I no longer supply you or your team parts or advice as you and your team have not paid your bill from over 2 years ago . This is the reason why I do not talk to you or do business with you and the way that you persist with continually trying to discredit me on this forum and with your customers . I know the truth and it will not be aired on a public forum as I don't think it is professional of me unless it is called for . I sponsor quiet a few cars with engines and parts and advice when it comes to drag racing . You would have no idea who has one of my engines , transmissions or even a complete car that was given to them as they could not afford to go racing until I stepped up for a deal . You even use a big wheelie pic. as your avatar with a clutch that was supplied by me , with all of the advice I gave you to get your car down the track as you were having clutch issues for the previous 2 meetings , and you didn't listen to the advice that i had given you . This is one instance I can comment on . Maybe it is the fact that I am not even a mechanic , that disturbs you , and that my previous 3 drag cars have all gone faster than your cars . I drag race because I can't drive for shit around corners , but , I am out there with all of my VW freinds and fellow competitors having fun at any event I attend . I don't have to promote myself in the way that you do because I help people out and I am good at what I do . I started selling parts in Australia just to fill the void left in the market . My motivation behind going fast is that I want to be the fastest , ROD.

Hey ben do you and Chris have your 1/8 mile MPH?
I was checking through some of my runs from years ago and they normally picked up 30mph from 1/8 to 1/4.
Does this compare with your combinations?
