Hi Rich

That looks good. I've been meaning to ask if you have experienced any gearbox noises form your G50?

Hi Steve. Your car looks great I'm building a suby powered early notch for my wife. These guys have some great air conditioning bits. May help with your setup

I do get some bearing type noise at low revs when I'm driving off but it disappears with a few revs and higher gears. From what I found 'they all do that' to a greater or lesser extent, my box was low mileage too.. It did get better with an oil change, with the LSD install it had new diff bearings too.

I few goodies arrived last week.

A Griimspeed cross pipe, good for 5 HP and a AVO solid boost control actuator.

Surprised the LED ain't blown yet. normally LED is 30mA max forward current @ 3.6v so hang on whilst I just do the maths. Yup 300ohms and use a 1 Watt resistor for heat handling. Done that from memory and rough common variables for high output LEDs so should be OK. :)

The LED warning lights like that are designed to run at 12 volts so they can just plug and play with built in resistors, same as the ones you fit for parkers, brake lights, indicators etc.

Hi

Thanks for the input. Once I get the gearbox issue sorted I will look in to air con.

Adam I would love to see a build thread on the notch, Type 3s are just asking for a conversion

Hopefully my gearbox noise are not too expensive, if not I might treat the box to a Quaife, ZFs go for $3000+ down here, a Quaife is about $1800.

As Joel said its a LED module with the warning lights with built in resistors, I just want to turn down the high beam one, its way too bright and as you usually only use high beam on dark roads it makes it worse.

Hmm, maybe run an extra 150ohm inline with the high beam dash light then or buy a small potentiometer so you can turn the thing down till you are happy with the light level. :)

Hi

Motor and gearbox are out.

Michael Newton warned me before he pulled the G50 apart that they are a noisy transmission from the factory and Porsche went to great lengths to drop the noise levels, revised engine & trans mounts, dual mass flywheels etc.

He cant find anything wrong with it, he said that its in very good condition with none of the usual wear areas. So it appears that my noises are cause by my mounting method. I have a stock G50 mount at the front of the transmission, two Kombi bellhousing mounts like a top mounted Berg style mount and stock WRX mounts under the motor.

So I ordered a Quaife diff for it and he will replace a few bearings just to be sure and its better to setup a new diff with new side carrier bearings.

Its in good company at the shop as its full of Porsche Cup cars.

Steve

Hi Reub

I bought it from the Australian agent in New Zealand.

This is him and the 1800 number for him works from Australia.

My diff was open, my G50 is from a base model 88 Carrera.

I've read mixed reviews on Quaifes, they are not much good in a hill climb situation where one wheel is in the air, but for the price compared to a ZF its cheep and is a much tougher centre.

A ZF is around $3000, the Quaife delivered is $1423

Yeah - I found Palmside were a great mob to deal with

:tu:

I've had both Quaife and ZF in Jezzi and completely agree with what Steve's said... ZF for a track car while for a mainly street car I'd go the Quaife every time.

Wait till you drive it first time in the wet with the Quaife Steve.... you'll be amazed at how predictable the handling is still.

Hi

I had a Quaife in my yellow 1302, they have no handling vices which cant be said for other LSDs.

Rudi ran one for years in his sports sedan and regularly two wheeled through corners and and says he didn't loose drive.

Oh and I'm adding to the budget surplus, $304.32, bugger

Hi

My Quaife arrived today, pretty quick delivery as I ordered it on the 8th December. I will take it out to Porsche gearbox guy and with bit of luck I will have it running later in January, so on track to have a run at WSID.

Hi

My AVO solid boost control actuator had a manufacturing defect, when I pointed it out to them, they sent me an upgraded billet unit, great customer relations.

Now that kind sir, is how some companies win at customer service!
Glad to hear at least someone is being looked after in this day and age, especially with everyone else complaining about customer service.

How long until the gearbox is already to be put back in?

Top work on this car by the way Steve, definitely one of my favourite 1303's.
I absolutely love that whale tail too, that's the one from Hölzl correct?

H

Thanks Senbastian, glad you like it.

I bought the AVO part through Tunehouse in Sydney, they were great to deal with as well.

I just took the Quaife out to Michel Newman, they are closed for 2 weeks so I should have the box back not long after that and I will get it running real soon.

Hi

Still waiting on the transmission to be finished, parts are all there just needs to be assembled.

I replaced my cracked 930 CV boots with some eBay ones, great quality.

Some time ago I read post on another forum by Ricola who is also on this forum about clocking CVs. After a bit of search I found the information on doing this. You can read more about it here http://www.outfrontmotorsports.com/cv_assembly.htm

Hi

Still waiting for my transmission to be finished off.

I used a plastic windscreen washer bottle as my water to air intercooler reservoir.

It always looked a bit cheap so I bought a aluminium one from eBay and had Westi fit two 3/4 bungs and a two bosses so I could fit a level indicator.

Excellent work as usual from Brad.
