Ive gone close to maxin the speedo in my stock 1.6.

You should get some tread plate to put down in your diveway so that its a flatter angle.

3rd gear is 100km/h for me.
Ratios are awesome. Still short but better cruising and top speed
Car is running rich though. Starting to backfire under load and smells rich.

you may have to try a set of hotter spark plugs.so the fuel burns a bit better and the plugs dont foul.
we went one number hotter plug and it made our 1916 smoother to drive.

Just adjusted the tappets to .15mm and it seemed to stop it backfiring?
Could this have been the cause?

Thats 0.15mm / 0.006".
Seems to be back to back firing. In lower revs, say when you try to pull out of a corner.
Does this mean I just have to change my idle settings?

No soot around ports and fairly sure there is no air leaks.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN: Can your 1.6 also blow off a 3.2 V6?
