rocknrob, have you considered how your thermostat is going to sense the water temterature with that setup. You have no flow of water past the
thermostat.

Hi (excuse me joel) yeah it will receive hot water same as any thermostat...it will be at the hotwater outlet of the engine and enough water flow thru
the little trickle hole so its not a dead end...and it will get a realistic temperature compared to at the inlet

Robs thermostat setup will work well if the original heater loop is in place as a bypass when its shut
that makes it just the same setup as most cars have with the 'stat on the hot side of the engine
just as long as the spring side is toward the engine so it can sense how hot the water coming from the block is
i was thinking of going this way as well but thought i'd give the stock setup a try first
im surprised how well it works actually
i was worried about the engine getting cold shocks but watching the temp gauge i could see it doing exactly what brad said they do
to get up temp really quick it just circulates the water around the engine only then as it starts to heat up it just keeps sipping cold from the
radiator return
as i wasnt driving there was no air through the radiator so it just kept doing this till all the cold was used up then the fan cut in for about 3
mins
incidently does anyone know the cut in/out temps for the fan?
both motors were identical to the degree
on at 103 and off at 98 which i know isnt the stock so im trying to work out how off my gauge is reading
it sat on about 87 till the 'stat opened and given its a 78c 'stat im guessing my gauge is about 10c too high

nice one bob, we gonna see all the purists crying at a subi powered split?
well 2:30 this arvo and still 36c and F'King hot!
but i decided what the hell and gingerly went on a maiden voyage run 20km out the bangalow/byron bay road
the new thermostat is certainly doing its job but its abit un-nerving seeing the temp gauge hit 90 within the first 1-2KM
the old motor used to take a good 5-10KM or so before it hit those kinda temps but for those that read my VWKD thread it was cos the thermostat in it
loooked like this
but once it got to 90 it pretty much stayed there varying between 90-95 which is really only 80-85 thanks to my innaccurate gauge
didnt get any hotter than that till i got back into town and slowed down to climb the big hill up to mum and dads place, even then it only hit about
98 which isnt that hot
fan didnt start till i got home and let it idle for about 4-5mins
im not giving this motor too much stick till its been running for a while as its been sitting for a quite a while but over all it doesnt feel any
different to the other one but its certainly running well and much to my delight when i got back after the run the level in the overflow tank was
exactly where i left it
the old motor used to raise it by several inches on a long trip then suck it back in overnight
i also noticed when i came back pulling from down low it pinged abit. it hasnt thrown the knock sensor code again but thats probably cos its not
working

Hey Joel you are going to love the sooby when you learn to trust it
but it is a bit of a worry this watercooled bit(don't tell the aircooled people) probably telling you something you already know but after a while go back and tighten all your hose clamps...heheh don't ask me
how i know

dont worry Rob, its the first thing i check after it cools down the first time
i can nearly always get an extra turn on each hose clamp after the first heat up/cool down cycle
the down side to this thread is your not seeing all the f**k ups i have, and theres been a few
had a doozy yesterday after i split a hose

i think the bug must be really pineing for forced induction again
the first subi motor had a really high pitched whine which sounded like a turbo spooling
so much so even an expeirenced subi mechanic thought it was a rexxy dub when i pulled up
i found when i pulledit down it was the bearings in the timing belt tensioner
but to add to the irony, this new motor is also whineing, but a much deeper one, that sounds alot like a supercharger
my camera has crap sound quality but u get the idea
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJOJvpuGry0
its probably coming off the timing belt, i got a new one here to chuck on it, just havient got round to it yet, been enjoying being back on the
road
got a dose of sunshine today at the northcoast christmas toyrun
dad and patrick got the trikes out so i thought what the hell, ill go for a pose
its funny the respect VWs get from all walks of life
i had people coming up all morning wanting to have look

BIG SMILES thanks to a single piece of paper
i was born without a soul so you will have to imagine it
$350 lighter now but my bug is again legal
only 2 changes required and dont even relate to the engine.
my front end needs raising cos it doesnt clear 100mm and my tacho needs relocating cos its illegal to have any gauges or accesories mounted ontop of
the dash or the windscreen area
just the kick start i needed to begin on my custom dash i wanna build but for now it can go underneath
thanks to one of Ians secret tricks of the trade it snuck under the noise limit by 4dB

dunno with yours being 71 but mine being 74 had ADR 25 and 27 on the compliance plate that it has to meet
pre 83 cars i think it was have to be under 94dB
we were able to make it abit easier though
the EJ22 like i have make 100KW @6000RPM
but he used the figures from the later ones which make 94KW @5400
the noise level has to be measured at 3/4 peak power so its only 3900RPM with the later ones which i "supposedly" have
at 3900RPM it was only pumping out 83dB but thats with the mr mezz device in
whats interesting though is its actully louder at 3500rpm than it is at 4500rpm
must be the resonation from that stupid canon
re the lowereing rule, lowest part of the car exclusding the wheels cannot be any lower than 100mm
my coolant hoses were at 87mm at the front and my swaybar saddles were at 95mm

Alright well i think mine is louder than that but will see cause its not to bad around half power.
100mm seems like a preety good height to have it sitting at anyways.
Is this one comin to the nationals?
