this view shows how large the muffler is . It is 24" long x 7" diameter . It is 3" straight through perforated tube and fibreglass packed . many
thanks go to KEVIN @ HYPERFLOW ACTIVE EXHAUST SYSTEMS for the time and effort he put into manufacturing this custom made muffler to suit the oval .

That is awesome, Really neat install, just the ticket!
I guess some quietening could be attributed to the turbo.

The turbo didn't quieten it as much as I had expected for such a low compression engine . I think this was due to the 3" diameter system . With the
hotdog type muffler that I ran at the drags the noise was checked by the engineer 102db @ idle and 111db @ 3000rpm . With the new muffler fitted it
was rechecked 93db @ idle and 97db @ 3000rpm . I still firmly believe that the majority of the noise coming from this car is the engine noise and not
the exhaust noise . Runs very quiet !!

Wayne, was speaking to my Mate the other day (you probably know which one) He gave me detailed account of Your Street Registered car - drives smooth
and sweet
when dawdling behind other cars in traffic and then he
described the effect of mashing the throttle -:- Basically he
said that it has spoilt his conception of a fast VW, he has been in many Bugs that he thought were Fast " he was Wrong".
He said that your car accelerates really fast and just when he expected that it would run out of puff it Keeps on accelerating. Then More and then you
change gear.
He thought that it would be good in the future if you took people to the shops with you that you have
Extra Heavy duty Grab handles.
So Got the BIG :thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb
for all round use and Fastest Street Registered VW he's ever seen.

So Wayne....after quite a few months of driving this setup, is it still tractable for daily use or a bit of a bitch? Just interested....it was a
question I asked earlier, but now with a few more months use, would like to know your thoughts.

I find that I can jump into the oval at any time and just turn the key and drive it . No reliability problems as yet .
I found that the cam in the engine was far too large for slow driving ( 320degree duration and .534" lift ) was suited to a normally aspirated
engine and worked best with a high compression ratio .
My engine is turbo , and low compression . So I designed and ordered a turbo grind cam that would suit my application much better and would eliminate
the loss of boost out the exhaust due to large overlap . The cam has arrived and will be fitted shortly after christmas . I anticipate more boost in
the cylinders and more power with the ability to drive much more sedately around town .
Will keep you posted on progress after cam change .
Merry Christmas to all .....................

What would it cost to get one made up

the muffler that I had manufactured quieten' down the oval from 111db to 97db , and this is straight through 3" perforated tube . Kevin also makes
them to order for South Coast Rotary , who fits them to rotors to quieten them down without losing performance . They will vary in cost depending on
size, diameter, lenght etc ,but the one that I had made cost around $260-00 . Give me a call on 02-42725844 during business hours and I will give you
his number direct .

Warrick / Valla preparation
well after driving the oval for just over 12 months , including back and forth to work every day of the school holidays as my son Dean wanted to
cruise in it , the oval has been put back in the shop to refreshen the engine . As I didn't fit new piston rings or refreshen the engine when I did
the oval build-up . I just removed the engine from my sports sedan , decompressed it , and set up the blow-through EFI intercooled turbo system . It
has been extremely reliable and streetable with the only problems being 1 spark plug oiling up after many short runs around town .
I have had a new turbo grind cam manufactured , new heavy-duty camfollowers , new piston rings and I am going to up the compression ratio from 6.1 to
8.5 . I will refreshen the tied old heads again as the hybrid end-port heads that I am working on are not ready as yet .
Monday night the engine was removed from the oval . Tonight my son Dean ( now 14yrs ) stayed back at work with me and stripped the engine whilst I
worked on customers cars .

Dean strips the engine for me and I am very shocked to find a large crack in the top of the engine case inside the fan housing area .
After removing the heads and barrels an inspection of the inside of the case doesn't help me as to the reason why . I cant see the crack due to its
location , but I will strip the bottom end tomorrow and all will be revealed .

engine disassembled
well I have disassembled the engine and split the case to remove the crank and cam , to find that the crack that is visible on the outside of the case
is extremely small on the inside . Nothing has broken in the engine and there is no internal case damage . We have come to the conclusion that the
crack is a stress fracture . I will be able to have the case rewelded and braced in this area .

not so healthy , I found that the piston ring end-gaps are between 3mm and 4mm on all of the top rings . The second rings are not much better .
Also number 4 cylinder has cracked the spigot on the barrel . This answers my suspisions regarding the pistons coming too far down the barrels , when
using those large 8mm decompression shims . This will need to be rectified .
