pic 1- the inlet ports are machined for clearanced to the top centre head nuts .
pic 2- the holes are drilled for the 5th headstuds .
pic 3- whilst the engineer is welding the engine case and heads again , I decide to rebuild the transmission . Here the transmission is stripped down and everything inspected for wear or damage . Everything looks fine .

Not planning on going to the jamboree this year , but will definately be at Warrick in 2 weeks time . Every thing was going to plan until my engineer got violently ill and has now been off for the past week . Planning on a few late nights this week and want the oval running by next saturday at the latest .

Hey Wayne does the inlet setup now make the heads etc fairly bullet-proof? Just thinking about how much time and effort this takes and whether the pay-offs are greater than flow rates but also durability as well?

Good questions ruckus , we'll only know in time how the heads will last . Guess work is not on my agender and I am entering new territory with the amount of modifications to the heads . The old heads had been used since 1994 and had done an enormous amount of work . I hope these heads are half as good as the old heads when it comes to life span .

WPVW WARRICK PREP UPDATE

pic 1- the front 4-stud discs have been removed from the oval and the original 5-stud front drum brakes have been fitted temporarily , so that my BRM's can be fitted . I have ordered a VVD front disc conversion and when it arrives I will fit it in place of the drums .
pic 2- after sitting on the shelf for over 18 months , the 2 front BRM rims are fitted with the 5.60x15 crossply tyres .
pic 3- these are the correct wheel bolts to be used with the BRM's . They still require cutting to length if you are using drum brakes , so that they don't strike any of the brake components inside the drums .

pic 1- with all of the brakes finished and the transmission installed , the oval rests on its wheels once again . Much easier to push around now with the welded diff removed and the ZF LSD fitted .
pic 2- the oval looks much better now with the front BRM's fitted . When the oval is reassembled it will look even more like a standard bug than it did before .
pic 3- I have fitted a stageing brake to the oval to assist me in getting the boost up at the start line . With the help of my son (Dean) the brake system has been adjusted and bled and is finished .

Great work Wayne. Can't wait to see how the oval goes. I'm over the whole capacity debate. The yanks stuff dragcar engines bigger than your bros in their street cars and pretend they are drivable. Great to see some good old aussie give them a run for their money. :tu:

Lovely to see the young bloke getting stuck into it. A whole new generation of VW petrolheads is a great thing. I'm pleased to see his got his father's handsome looks. :)

Dean is such a great kid !! Very genuine , not a smart-arse and just loves to work on VW's .
Several weeks ago Dean was at the workshop a few nights in a row till about 11pm , doing his very first top-end engine rebuild for his beetle . At the age of 14 he struggled to get up for school each morning , but it didn't stop him from working those very same evenings to get his engine completed .
Here is a pic of Dean with his much loved 61' ragtop beetle 'Black Betty' , that I gave him as a gift for being such a great mate !!

Well done Wayne, your still a crazy bugger when it come to your rides. I can't get over how much Dean has grown, it's a good thing he looks like his mother, but with his fathers passion for the old dak dak.

That a sweet ride for your first VW.

Well done guys and good luck for warrick.

In a world full of crappy parenting. It's good to see a dad working on a good relationship with his son. Keep it up Wayne. Australia needs more dads like you.

BTW, I assume you're teaching him to drive it as well. ;)

Must be time for a motorkhana or two eh?

Dean has been driving manual since he was 7 years old . When he was 7 , I built him a go-cart that looked like a minature corvette .
I built a full chassis including king pins , fitted a 100cc yamaha engine with 5 speed gearbox , beetle gearstick with sequential gear change , beetle shortened gearshift rod and bush , shortened beetle pedals , golf disc on rear axle with beetle caliper , hydraulic master cylinder , and geared the drive so that it would do approx. 30kph flat out in 5th gear .
He loved it and enjoyed driving it until he grew too big for it , and then he started driving beetles at the age of 10 . He is now so competant that I trust him to drive cars in and out of the worshop area ( including 'Mango Dream' and my twin-cab and the turbo oval )
He is a very sensible kid and I will be getting the sports sedan going again soon so that we can both drive it at Huntley hillclimb , where he will gain a great deal of experience in driving .
I will try to find a couple of pics of the go-cart and post them .

Those heads looks great.

I wish I had them on my NA 2.8 type4, I have got 914 heads with 48 X 38mm valves and porting but no welding on intakes. I know that it is limiting my power at the moment. I will just have to have them welded and get off my lazy but.

Great job

Hermann

P.S. do you still have the old cam that was in the engine?

Last year Kris Lauffer drive his red cabrio in that event and that car is running 9's now... And there are quite a few other cars i know of that did the same thing.... there are plenty of 10 ssec plus street cars in the US, but most of them only get around 80mile from a tank of gas..... But they are streetable.... nobody said they had to be economical!

Hi Hermann , yes I have kept the cam and matching lifter set from the engine and have packed it away in a safe place .
I do plan on using it somewhere in the near future in my sports sedan .

ANOTHER UPDATE FROM WPVW

Have been putting a hugh effort and lots of hours into the oval this week and progress is looking good .
pic 1- engine case has been welded to allow for 5th headstud modification .
pic 2- the super heavy-duty chromemoly main bearing studs that I had manufactured for the type-4 engine . These studs use the type-1 main bearing nuts . Here they are pictured beside a standard stud .
pic 3- the main bearing holes in both halves of the engine case need to be machined out to accept the larger diameter studs .

pic 1- due to the use of titanium valves in these heads , special ally/bronze valve seats need to be used . These seats will be a more compatible material to use as they are a little softer than the hard steel seats and tend to look after the titanium valves a lot better . They also have a more compatible heat expansion rate to the aluminum heads . I have purchased a chunk of ally/bronze-1 and had 8 new valve seats machined for the heads .
pic 2- the engine case has been machined , drilled and helicoils fitted in the mount area for the 5th headstuds .
pic 3- a dummy fit-up is performed with the barrels to check the 5th headstuds are located properly .

pic 1- the valve seats are removed from the cylinder heads so that the heads can be welded around the seat area .
pic 2- the crankshaft has been crack tested / machined / cleaned and then reassembled .
pic 3- a windage tray is fitted to the engine case to reduce the risk of oil serge . This will help keep a mass of oil from splashing all over the crank under acceleration which would result in a drain on the horsepower .
