Yeah, I thought so, thanks Joel!
Yep, will be getting some disc brakes doen from John, but in the mean time I'm getting the new iPhone...

I still can't get over the fact how much fun it is to drive Zelda.
Every time I get in, it's just great fun now. No need to worry about anything, I just get in and drive her.

Ah, I have to agree with you their Jeff.

Over the past week I put on about 600km.
100km solely last night.
Been turning heads lately too. People been waving here and there, and had some kid pointing at me at the lights the other day.

I just hope it turns heads more when I have the right rims on her and the new guards, new engine, new paint and new interior.
Aiming for next Bay to Birdwood to have everything done.

Been doing a heap of research into what I want the interior to look like.
Here are some images that have aided in my inspiration.

http://www.ricola.co.uk/images/cabrio/trim_ideas/RV_09.jpg

http://www.ricola.co.uk/images/cabrio/trim_ideas/Boniberger04.jpg

http://www.ricola.co.uk/images/cabrio/trim_ideas/Lind005.jpg

Luckily one of Mum's cousins is an upholsterer. So getting it done shouldn't be an issue. I'm just curious about seats.
Have been looking at trying to source some Porsche 944 seats and getting them recovered, but not 100% sure.
German look equals what seats? I'm confused about it. Obviously Porsche seats are definitely a plus, but what do other people have?
I am leaning towards having a leather interior, probably black. Just depends on the overall look. I really like the cream leather in the above images though...

Also, Kamei front spoilers. Where should I be looking to grab one?
Are they actually worth the money? What are the pro's and con's of having one installed?

Also, I probably should have asked this a while back, but now that I'm actively looking for disc brake kits and so forth, I want to make sure I get the right one.
Zelda's chassis/vin number is 1333011208. Is that definitely a 1973 L bug?

Can anyone tell me more information about Zelda just from that number?
Where it was assembled and so forth. I want to find out as much information as possible about her.
Always learning.

Hub Adapters are not legal. You can have your brake disks redrilled and legal once engineered. I have converted my car to ford pattern and have 13mm spacers but they ate not called wheel spacers, they are hub backplates and just happen to be 13mm thick. You just have to have a good engineer and a imagination.

Alrighty, have been a busy little bee.

I found the time to do some stuff with those steelies I got ages ago.
Two of them were steel, the other two had already been painted black, with a red lip.

So I got cracking on the two that were "normal" and they turned out really good after two coats of paint.
Might do another coat tomorrow just for arguments sake but highly doubt it.

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0176-1.jpg

These are the two that I did and they came out really nice. Don't worry about the overspray, getting brand new tyres for them as don't know how old the ones on there already are and don't want to risk it. Might take them somewhere and use them as burnout treads one day. This was after two coats of paint.

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/DSC_0015.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/DSC_0016.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/DSC_0017.jpg

The two black with red lips ones, they didn't work at all.
The black was covered easily, but the red, that decided to go pink. So I'm going to have to sand them back and do it again, which is no biggy, was just hoping to run all four of them as soon as possible.

I figured out the exact issue with the oil leak too. It's the gasket between the alternator stand and the case.
I was meant to go and pick it up today but didn't get the chance so will head in tomorrow to get it so that I can replace it and be able to park Zelda in the driveway without a tray underneath her.
Albeit I might be picking up a new case within the next couple of days, we will see what happens. I might just put up with the leak until the new engine is ready for Zelda.

Big things to come with Zelda.

One such person told me what I was doing with Zelda had no style. It was common.
So I decided I'd do something that I haven't seen done before.

More news coming as it happens.
Brake master cylinder being picked up today, hopefully installed today too.
Tombstone taillights also being picked up today.

Which means, with any luck, those guards will be going on as well. If I get the reverse lights working that is.

More news and pictures when it happens.

Alrighty, so here's a quick little update.

Zelda now looks like this.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/316562_2580707883376_1424804037_4711357_1156586147_n.jpg

I also replaced the gasket between the alternator stand and the block.
I found this while taking it all apart to put the new gasket in. Is this even supposed to be there?
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0257-1.jpg

A mate said that I need to drain the oil and change it. Said that it was because the oil hasn't been changed for ages?
Also found out that it is "normal" for winter operation.

Issues are as follows:
- Distributor blew up (I'm an idiot).
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0259-1.jpg

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0260-1.jpg

I think we can all guess what happened there...
New one has already been ordered. Figured I needed one with a vacuum advance as I am running an original Solex carburettor.
Cleaned it up actually, made in Western Germany.

Anyway, back to what is happening.
- Brake hose needs to be replaced, not whole cylinder.
- Brake lights don't activate when foot is on brake pedal.

I'll update with some more information as it comes.
Don't think I'll have Zelda back on the road till next weekend.

Smiley,

She died. Well, she's being stored for another day.
And yes, the new car will be a VW. I don't know if it'd be appropriate to make a thread on here for a watercooled VW...
Seems everything on here is a Beetle, especially in the Member's Ride section anyway.

I guess when I get the new one I'll put something up somewhere.

A Serious Question

Alrighty, as most of you are probably aware by now, Zelda has died and is going into storage. However, she may be out sooner than I had anticipated, if people think it is the best thing to do.

I'm heading overseas for a month and a half, family holiday and work. Now, as I'll be working over there, I'll still be earning an income. Therefore, by the time I get back, I'd have enough money to get Zelda towed somewhere, do a WRX conversion on her, and then drive her back.

My issue is this.
I need a daily driver as soon as I get back from overseas. Do I not bother with Zelda for a bit and buy myself a nice MK3/MK4? I'm even contemplating a MK3 VR6.

What do you think? Zelda will definitely be back, and she'll be done properly. The aim is to spend around 20k getting her perfect. That includes a complete respray, all body work (rust), interior and engine. The thing is though, that would have to wait till the start of 2013.

Open to discussion on this.

Just do it.

You should do the sensible thing and buy yourself a later model watercooled Golf/etc to drive around in. But I know I wouldn't.

I am buying a MK3 Golf, that is a done deal, I just don't know what I should do with Zelda when my time in storage is up...

Subaru conversion does sound good though.

And thanks Smiley, at least I can count on your input! :D

Plus that new car wouldn't be Zelda!!

I still have my first Beetle with the intention of restoring her.
I was even stupid enough to keep her registered for 2 years without driving it, despite the fact she had no engine fitted at all.

I know the new car wouldn't be Zelda, and that's why I'm trying to hold onto her.
I have the intention on restoring her later down the track, be it a year or two, I don't necessarily want to sell her.

I might sell some of the parts that I have collected though, they might make me some cash that I can put towards the new car...

Ian,

I was kinda contemplating sending it off to someone that had done the conversion before...
I wonder...

Might try and get Joel to jump on MSN and talk to him about it.
Could get Zelda towed to his place and give him some money to get it all started...
However, is it a realistic option? Would Joel actually do the conversion or is he too busy? I guess these are all questions I'll have to ask him...

We'll see what happens.

As for the newer VW comment, I have read a lot and they do seem to be very dodgy... Might see what I can find under Hyundai or Toyota, any specific models?
Just need something reliable.

Depends whether your talking about an abused VR6 or a well taken care of 8valve.

If maintained, virtually any watercooled VW is fine.

It isn't the main reason, but one of.

The main reason is that I am heading overseas for a month and a half and it was going to be garaged regardless.
I thought, instead of it being garaged, someone could be converting her to a Subaru engine while I'm away.

Alright, there has been a change of plan and it is due to me waking up a little.

It's all well and good to just send Zelda away to get all her problems fixed, but then it wouldn't be, my Zelda. People that work on their own cars will know what I mean by that.
What I am, however, going to get done is over the next month and a bit I'm going to hand Zelda over to Siggi at GHR.
Monday, I'm going to give him a call and see whether or not he can rewire Zelda completely. And I mean completely. All wiring will go back to stock, obviously bypassing an internal regulator due to the alternator on the engine.

However, even this is up in arms. I know for a fact that the reason why she isn't running at the moment is due to no spark. This is due to me putting the distributor wiring on back to front onto the coil. I have replaced both the distributor and coil, so the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the ignition wiring. Now, to me, this is just screaming for me to put in electronic ignition while I'm at it, maybe even an electric fuel pump. But I digress, the only thing that really needs to be replaced is the ignition wiring.

So yes, Monday morning I'm going to give Siggi a call. Hopefully I can organise something and get her towed down there.
I'll find out tomorrow whether or not Dad is going to be in Adelaide or in Port Hughes and maybe he can then lend a hand getting Zelda down to Siggi's...

I guess Siggi could do a full service on Zelda as well. A month and a half is a long time, no doubt I could get him to do a full service, check brakes, all of that as well.

Time will tell.
I'll update on Monday.

Main thing I have learned and it's very hard to do sometimes but ONLY fix whats broken and get it driving and back on the road again THEN do other things later when its on the road and you have the money.

Best Advice i got for VW's cause as Jeff Said "more addictive then drugs!" :D

Oh god damn it I only just got rid of most of the VWs and random cars around the place.

Ians right though as good as modern VWs are as daily drivers, parts and servicing cost is bull crap.
I nearly bought a 2001 Passat for a daily till I started looking into replacement parts costs.
Euro cars are shocking for it, thats why I stick to my Jap-scrap.

Even alot of Korean stuff aint bad daily transport if you can live with the odd rattle and fading plastic and paint.

Dylan,
You're right, it is bloody hard to stop once you get started. I guess now that I have just moved out of home today, I need to get her up and running as soon as possible. I guess we will see what tomorrow brings.

Joel,
All good man, Zelda ont be heading up your way anytime soon, unless of course she gets completely fixed, then there might be a road trip on our hands!
But I digress, I might look at some japcrap stuff anyway, but we will see what happens?

Let's just say the only definite thing is that Zelda needs to get fixed as soon as possible and be as reliable as possible now that I'm not at home...

Bought a brand new exhaust as well.
Going to get an auto electrician out within the next couple of days.

VW day is next Sunday. Going to try and sell some of the parts that I have collected over the past few months.
Seems I'm still leaving for Europe the day after, so whatever I sell I sell and whatever I don't, I don't.

Need to get Zelda fixed before then.
