Boom, Zelda is coming alive.
Found out it was my distributor, it wasn't sitting properly in the block...

Like, the shaft of the distributor wasn't long enough. God that sounds so wrong.
But we're charging the battery now, so hopefully tomorrow we can get her started after work.

We'll see what happens.

And Zelda is alive!

Had her running this evening, got it done around ten o'clock!
It is done, she is running, brake lights are working, and next up is a new exhaust.

Boom, Zelda is back.
And God it feels bloody good to know that I did it myself.

All that is needed now is this exhaust to be bolted on tomorrow and the reverse lights done.
Will post some photos of the new additions.

I think it was definitely time to upload a video of Zelda working to YouTube. So I did so.

I think she sounds, bloody tough. It is a great feeling, knowing that I fixed her myself, installed the new exhaust as well, by myself. Massive sense of achievement.

Can't wait to take some photos in the sunlight!

Check it out here.

Has been great to drive Zelda around the past day, I got my sound system setup with my new head unit and it is seriously full on.
Hopefully going to be showing off her sound system at VolksFest.

Let's just say, she won't be there for good looks, but she'll be a good sight for bass heads like myself.

I think I'm getting fumes in my cabin again.
Only thing I can think that would be doing it is the heater pipes, but the thing is, the right hand side heater pipe isn't connected by a hose to the fan shroud. However, there is a hose from the fan shroud down below the engine tinware. It just wouldn't get into place properly.

Going to bug bomb her tomorrow, had some nasty crawlers inside and to be honest, I hate them, especially when they are massive!

Will update with some photos tomorrow if the rain clears up.

Thanks Dylan, it has been great to work on her and fix things as they popped up and then break things and then refix it.
I've definitely learnt a lot from %^&*ing around with her, which is sometimes a bad thing but most of the time, a good thing.

Anyway, bug bombed her today and got her washed for tomorrows VolksFest, going to be good fun!
Have tuned the subwoofer and speakers as well, going to go for a cruise tonight and test her out before showing off the sound system tomorrow.

Monday morning she's going in the garage for a month and a half. Off to Europe Monday, so won't be playing with her for about a month and a half.
When I get back, have already got a complete lowering kit lined up from Airkewld and some 914 wheels from Vollks are already on my shopping list.

Once they are done, she'll be getting a respray before my 18th. Aim is to have her completely resprayed before April next year. Will be good to have her Antarctic White.

Exciting :D

Alrighty, yesterday was great!

Drew a few crowds around Zelda, answered a few people's questions about the exhaust and taillights, lack of trim and so forth, also got a few bassheads around and gave them a few demos of the sound system, met a few people that were definitely awesome and overall, had a great time.

But I'm paying for it now, I am sunburnt, like a tomato!

Anyway, as you're probably all aware, I leave for overseas today. In an hour and a half to be exact, I have to be at the aiport.
Zelda is parked inside the garage! That is a first, hence the exclamation mark, I never in a million years expected Mum (especially after the last week) to let me park Zelda inside the garage!

I took some photos of some new additions to Zelda (stickers) and got a photo of the exhaust as well. And the engine bay like it was yesterday :)

And last but not least.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0368-1.jpg

I'll still be floating around the forum and I'll still be ordering stuff for Zelda while I'm gone, but definitely going to miss cruising around in her.
I'll be taking a heap of photos in the UK of basically every single Kombi/Beetle I see, and will put them up on a thread elsewhere.

Ciao for now.

Ahaha if only, it took me almost a year to even get close to putting it in the garage.

The lowering kit is going to be mad. Adjustable coilovers, 1" to 6".
Oh, and I also got these wheels lined up too.

Smiley,

You're right, it should be done by now, but have met a mechanical fuel pump that is seriously hating the new setup.
Just need to grab an electric fuel pump and then everyone will see what has happened to Zelda.

She has definitely had a makeover that is for sure. Once everything is done to her, she is going to be a mind blowing car.

But, a sneak peek from a couple of nights ago. Have cleaned her up a bit more since...
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0445.jpg

Sorry for the terrible image quality, will take a better one once she's finished.

Well, she isn't doing the job properly whatsoever.

Got the RAA to come out, he confirmed that that was the problem and yeah, it could be the rod inside that may be the issue as we didn't change that but changed the actual pump three times...
Might try and take the rod out of the 1500sp and put it in the 1600tp, could that work?

Just need to get her running, then I can get the carbs tuned.

Aside from that photo, a lot more has been sorted out (such as wiring and accelerator cable).
However, seems something is wrong with the accelerator cable as well, pedal gets stuck a little bit. Any recommendations to get it fixed?

Top hose was definitely the inlet hose into the above picture, what about on the older motor?
I'm pretty sure we had the hoses going the right way... Or else the RAA dude wouldn't have been able to use his hand pump thing instead, I think?

Yeah, the one that is on her now is the one from the old single port, but still isn't doing the job.
I'll take a photo in the day time of it now and post it.

Hard to tell for sure as the pic is dark but it looks like in the pic above that is the T-piece going to the other carb infront of the coil on the hose coming off the top of the pump?

If thats the case then it is back to front.
Those metal dome top pumps have the inlet on the top and outlet on the bottom, complete opposite to the early pumps

Catches alot of people out.

Nah, in that one, the T-piece is coming off of the lower hose connected to the fuel pump, the top line is straight from the tank...

I've currently got the old fuel pump on the engine, the top of that goes to the T-piece which then goes to the carbs. I think that is correct...
If that is the correct thing, do you think just changing the rod inside might fix things or do I just jump the gun and get an electric fuel pump setup?

Just received my distributor without vacuum advance too, so that's going in tonight.

Alrighty, this is just a quick update with some veryvery new photos that I just took.

Basically this is the current mechanical fuel pump with the fuel lines connected as they are...
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0446.jpg

And from another angle.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g388/SebastienPeek/IMG_0447.jpg

As you can see, the fuel line from the tank goes into the side of the current fuel pump and the fuel line from the top of the pump goes to the T-piece and then to the carbs.
I'm pretty sure this is correct, but if I am wrong (and it is an easy fix) then I should be able to fix her and take her for a drive tonight.

Otherwise, it won't be till next Tuesday when I have enough funds to purchase and install an electric fuel pump.

So what exactly is the problem with the fuel pump?

Not pumping fuel, not pumping enough fuel? Pumping too much fuel?

They are a very basic system and there isn't a heap that can go wrong with them.

Your pushrod could be the incorrect length or worn down.
The plastic guide tube that goes into the block can somtimes break and cause issues.
The shaft that the rocker in the pump pivots on can also work its way out of the pump and cause dramas.

One problem that I have had with my 1500 Beetle was that the pump would work for a while, but the when it got hot it would stop pumping. I pulled it down a number of times and the diaphrams appeared perfectly fine. But still the problem occured.
I asked an experianced VW mechanic about it, and he said that when the pumps get old they can just stop working when they are hot, even if the internals appear fine. I bought a new one and all the problems went away.

I the think it'd be easier for you to diagnose and fix the stock pump instead of speading more money on an electric version. The stock one pumps more than enough fuel, I'm using one on my 2054 with twin 40mm Kadrons and it's perfect. I actually have to regulate the pressure back because it pumps a little too much.

I hope this helps.
Kepp at it!!

Hey Smiley!

Alright, the current issue with the pump is that it isn't pumping whatsoever.
Sometimes there is a little bit of fuel coming from the line from the tank, but it isn't getting to the carbs.

I've got the rod from my 1500 that I'll give a shot tomorrow with, but other than that I'm all out of ideas, unless I get the whole pump systems (black holder thingy as well) from my 1500 and put it into the 1600 and see how that goes.

Just want to get her up and running, kinda need her as she is my daily driver and am currently relying on the misses car, which isn't good for any of us and is just an annoyance to be honest. Plus, I always dreamt of driving her in the Summer with all the windows open and yeah, just sad that on the hottest days I can't be doing that...

But yeah, tomorrow night I'll swap over the rod and if that doesn't work, them I am all out of ideas.

Sorry if I'm wrong but I'm pretty dam sure you do have the lines round the wrong way. The bottom pipe is the outlet, it should go to the T piece and then to the carbs and the fuel supply line goes in the top. This should work.
