Why?

Because at the time I had a certain amount of money to spend and the straight cut kit was about 170 bucks and the helical kit was about 40... I'm led to believe the gain isn't really worth the extra outlay. The budget at the time was the biggest factor, straight cuts were not exactly necessary.

Thanks guys, I'm really happy things are moving along.

Oh, if the money was there I would have used them regardless! I like the sound! But aside from what it looks like its still a budget build, the only reason I have all these cool parts is because I got a really good deal on them!

Straight cut's aren't just about the noise, but I'm sure your aware of that. Being a turbo (milder cam) and a race engine you will no doubt be doing early teardowns so as to keep an eye on cam bearing thrust wear. They do wear faster using stock gears on a performance aplication.

Really liking the direction and choices your making Mick.... Its a very logical build with solid processes, spending where you need to, based on what life says you can do at that time... Taking is easy and making the right moves will prove the best course in the long run.

Gee thanks Simon, thats some kind words! I have been pretty lucky with alot of this gear... some of its been barterd, some of it ive been in the right place at the right time and the rest of it is just down to knowing all the helpful people in this vw drag racing scene. Without mates like Dave and alot of the people around here someone like me really woldnt know where to start or be able to afford to do this at all, so big thanks to everyone!

Boosr gauge showed up today!

Got another box from rod today! 27mm short torsion bars, oil cooler bypass, some offroad cylinder head tin that we will modify to run my fans and a set of Scat 5.7" chevy journal rods with 3/8 bolts. The Cb ones i have need work to be used in this motor so i went with new ones....

Dave butler has had my engine and he has machined the barrels to the right length and set the deck height. Due to the restrictions of building an engine around the header and having the wiseco b pistons we ended up with quite a bit of deck.... So compression is set at 7.5 :1 and we will run a bit more boost than originally planned

In reality, By DB setting the compression a little lower than we had planned its bringing it back to the direction this engine was suppsed to be going in before we started geting carried away! A nice reliable, long lasting turbo motor... Its safer this way im sure.

Hey, I'm posting some pics for Mick

I actually let him have a go on the welder today lol, and he did very well.

Here is some pics of the extra guages we mounted today. Mick also fitted his staging brake ready for us to make up some brake lines for it.

Mad Ash has also slipped a few boxes of what appears to be his whole engine in parts onto my shed floor hoping to have it all assembled before Warwick??? We'll see..........

Cheers Dave!

Hey, Got a fair bit done this week end. On Fri I snuck a bit of shed time and die grinded the oil holes on the main bearings and in the case so they lined up and also grinded the 'chamfer' around the sump hole (DB Trick) to allow the oil to flow into the drop sump easily. Mick came to help out Sat and began by cleaning the case, cam, crank, rods, lifers and laid everything out neatly, ready for assembly while I started with setting the cam end float to .002". Had to skim a bit off the thrust washers to achieve this. Got both halves of the bearing exactly even. We then fitted the Timing and distributor drive gears onto the crank by heating them in a tin with oil on the camp stove and knocking them into place with a tube of steel and made our own 'dropped' pick up tube cos the one you get is, as Dave would say, Bogus.

Today we fitted all the bung's into the case where welch plugs had been removed while continuing to blow air through all the oil holes to ensure no oil galleries were being blocked/abstructed by any of the bung's as we went. We then blocked the oil pressure relief passage at the flywheel end by putting two pressure relief pistons plus a thin washer into the hole to block it completly and blocked off the bleed off hole from the passage at the pully end. Two orig. VW plugs were then fitted. The reason for all of this is Mick is running a Jacee 'By pass' Oil filter housing which has pressure relief built into it. Confident we had everything in place we continued to fit the Bearings, Crank, Dist Drive, Lifters and Cam into one case half. Paying att to the Toyota Thrust washers on the crank shaft and adding the synthetic running in paste to the new Cam and Lifters. Put the bearings and Lifters in the other case half painted the mating surfaces with Aviation Jizz. FITTED THE CAM PLUG and joined the beast together. Clicked it all up and It all turn's beautifully.

Here's some Pics of the oil holes and sump hole.
