DYNO SHEET
here is the dyno sheet for the turbo oval from last tuesday . As you can clearly see , the oval made an incredible amount of usable horsepower and was
still making power when Kevin got off the throttle at 320.6bhp@5600rpm .
ran the oval for the first time on saturday at Warrick , and it bloody flys .
first run on the 1/8 mile was 7.1@102mph , with a very steady take off . The 60 foot time was 1.9secs , but the oval normally runs 1.7 secs . So 6's
are very possible .
second run was 7.5@99mph and I missed 3rd gear . checked the tacho recall when I got back to the pits and it showed 8200rpm .
third run did a nice strong burnout , but broke the crownwheel & pinion from the start line .
CANT WAIT TO RUN IT ON THE QUARTER !!

Sacrifice clutches instead of crown wheels.
Cranky has to play clutch even with a tuff box and I guess you will have to aswell.

G'day Wayne - how did the tranny repairs go after warwick? Is the oval back in action yet?
I was disappointed I didn't get to see it run more at warwick (I was sitting in the staging lanes and missed every run)...ah well, can't wait to see
it run next time!
By the way, did you end up narrowing the ally beam 4 inches in the end - if so were you able to retain the shock towers in some way?
Cheers
Alan

to strengthen the box now I have got my brother Rod to order for me a new 9310 chromemoly crownwheel & pinion set from US in 3.44 ratio .
I have also ordered a new 1st and 2nd gear combination of 3.3 / 2.08 to replace the 4.11 / 2.21
This will make 1st gear a lot more usable as with the present combination the oval tends to jump off the line , shift light flashes at 7100rpm and I
have to grab 2nd gear in about 25 feet . When this happens I feel that the engine revs quickly but doesn't get boost up immediately .
I watched a lot of other cars on the drag day and they seem to be going a lot further than I am in 1st gear .
With the taller 1st gear I am sure that the engine will get on boost better as it will be under more load and this will bring my 60 foot times down
.
Then with the taller diff ratio I have calculated that the oval will be doing 110mph in 3rd gear @ 7100rpm and then 138mph in 4th gear @ 6500rpm .
When the crownwheel & pinion arrives from Rod , I will strip the oval and post pics of the transmission carnage .

Hi Alan , I really didn't get time before I went to Warrick to narrow the front beam , so I removed the front disc brakes and put the brakes back to
stock so that I could fit my BRM's on the front .
I was surprised at how well the oval stopped on 4-wheel drum brakes from 102mph . I think I may have to do a brake upgrade though before running on
the quarter .

preparation update .
Well I have had a slight setback . Brother Rods' order arrived from US on Friday and there were no ring and pinion sets packaged in the order .
I have made enquiries through several sources and I am waiting for a response .
The 3.3/2.08 1st/2nd gear set has arrived . Just waiting on the ring and pinion .

I love this thread (its inspiration for my next oval project!)....do you anticipate any problems with the heads cracking between the inlet/exhaust
valves since there is such little material there?

Hi Dave , I went for the albins 002 style as this is the same as I am currently using in this tranny . I find them much stronger with the splined gear
to hub on 3rd and 4th gears .

I dont antisipate any cracking between the valves as cracking is normally caused by excessive heat . By tuning the engine correctly and making sure
the fuel mixtures are perfect ( and those of you who saw the oval run at Warrick can testify to the crispness of the throttle response ) , the engine
should produce good horsepower reliably without cracking the heads .
The amount of material between the valves is no less now than with the old heads , as I have made the new ally-bronze seats much thinner for better
flow .

Well after brother Rods' order arrived from US without the parts that I had ordered and chasing all over for over a month , the new 3.44 ring and
pinion has finally arrived .
I managed to locate a couple in US and have them shipped over quickly .
Sometime over the next couple of weeks , I will stip down the oval and fit the new ring & pinion and also the new 1st / 2nd gear set .

Hi Wayne,
Sorry to crash your site, bloody awsome car by the way, but i was wondering if you (or anyone on this forum) knows where to locate some half decent
type 4 heads for a motor i am building up.
so far it looks like: 103x82, h-beam chevy rods, web 86b/86c cam, cb throttle bodies, msd, haltec computer etc.. only the heads i was going to build
up are not a very good base.. I was thinking around the 38x48 ported/polished route.. anyone know where i can lay my hands on anything?

MORE BOOST...MORE BOOST...MORE BOOST...
Today the new larger 759cc injectors arrived and I feel more boost coming on......... The old injectors were 550cc .
I am now feeling like I am about to take a walk across egg-shells with cast-iron boots . There is a fine line between maximum horsepower and major
blow-up !! I wonder just where that is ?

Hi Nick , I will be ready for the 13th at Heathcote .
I have been busy the last couple of days fitting the air-conditioning components to the type-3 project and only got a start on the oval late this
afternoon .
I managed to get the engine out of the oval and started on the trans removal .
Below is a pic of what came out of the transmission drain plug hole .......... looks pretty impressive eh !!

TRANSMISSION REMOVED AND STRIPPED
well I managed this afternoon to get to my workshop to remove the transmission from the oval and then strip it down to check the 'WARRICK CARNAGE'
.
pic-1 the transmission is once again removed from the oval and fitted to the engine stand .
pic-2 the damage to the ring & pinion may be worse than first thought as quite a lot more debries falls out of the drain plug hole , including whole
teeth .
pic-3 the axles and tubes have been removed , the LSD is removed from the transmission to find considerable damage to the ring .

pic-4 a large quantity of teeth are broken or even missing from the ring .
pic-5 not a pretty sight inside the rhino housing . Massive amounts of teeth and debries . Fortunately no damage to main housing or side plates .
pic-6 the head on the pinion doesn't look any better than the condition of the ring . It also has whole teeth missing . I think I had better call the
dentist for this tranny .

pic-7 with the transmission completely stripped down , the ring & pinion are washed and dried , ready for the trophy cabinet . ( As they are useless
for anything else )
Reassembly will start tomorrow with the new 3.44 ring & pinion and the taller 1st & 2nd gear sets .
No other damage was found in the transmission , other than a few minor markings on the ZF LSD housing .

I am interested to get an idea on how course the teeth are.
Thanks DB.

Hi Dave , here are the tooth counts for you .
1st gear 9/30 = 3.33
2nd gear 13/27 = 2.08
3rd gear 18/26 = 1.44
4th gear 25/26 = 1.04
R&P 9/31 = 3.44

TRANSMISSION RE-ASSEMBLY
pic-9 the new ring is fitted to the ZF LSD hemisphere and the bolts are torqued down .
pic-10 the pinion is assembled with all of the gears and fitted to the rhino housing so that the ring and pinion can be set-up properly
pic-11 the ring assembly is fitted to the transmission to check the backlash . I had to adjust the shimming on the ring and pinion 8 times before I
was happy with the results .

pics-12 & 13 show the new pinion fitted to the transmission . Note how large the pinion head diameter is to a stock 3.88
Bearing blue has been applied to the teeth of the ring and pinion to check the meshing of the teeth .

TRANS REPAIRED AND ENGINE RE-FITTED
pic-16 the transmission is completed and fitted back into the oval once again .
pic-17 after much consideration and advise from others in the know , I have decided to remove the 3-puk clutch disc from the oval and replace it with
a 4-puk that I purchased from brother Rod . This should extend transmission life drematically .
I had 2 choices of discs . The cinter-iron disc or the 4-puk . I hope I have made the right choice , but the deciding factor for me was the disc
weight .
The cinter-iron disc weighed 1.25kg and the Kennedy race 4-puk weighed 750gms . The lighter disc will not only allow the engine to rev quicker , but
the choice for me was made due to the quicker gear changes that can be achieved with the lighter disc .
With the Kennedy stage-4 3000lb ductile pressure plate that I am using , I don't suspect any clutch slip .

pic-18 check out the heat discolouration on the clutch and pressure plate that I removed from the oval . That 3-puk disc really doesn't like to slip
, especially on that last 7000rpm launch that munched the ring & pinion .
pic-19 the engine was installed back into the oval late this afernoon . Tomorrow morning I will go to the shop early to connect all of the plumbing
and fit the rear of the body back on , before all the crazy kids turn up at home for my daughters birthday party around lunch time .
