Hey snitz,
Have already contacted a couple of people, basically I will be the one who takes the body off the pan and strips the body.
As for the pan, I'm not going to do anything to it while she's being painted. I'll be doing the pan probably in October some time when I have enough cash to splurge on the suspension upgrade and all of that.

Some people have gotten back to me with around the $2,000 mark, someone up in Willunga who has done other Beetle's and Kombi's as well. Still waiting on a reply from him via email or even a phone call, but haven't heard back since asking whether or not I can go and have a look at the workshop. Other people have said $4,000 and someone else said $8,000. If this dude up in Willunga falls through, then I'll way up my options, but basically will do all the stripping myself and all they need to do is the preparation and paint.

I know that the paint itself is really expensive, and I do want show quality, but from what I have heard around in Adelaide, it is possible to get some really good jobs done for a fraction of what some people quote you for. I guess you just need to do a lot of research and thankfully my research did me good by finding this bloke in Willunga. We'll just wait and see what happens...

I feel as though my thread needs some decent photos. Might push Zelda to the oval near my place and take some cool night photos later tonight.

Seb Mate, great to see such progress in the bug.

Makes me feel like I need to get off my ass and working on mine!

Wish I was around your area to get some nice before and after shots

Ollie,
Will definitely be getting some very nice before and after photos.
Treated myself in Singapore and got a Nikon D3100 for very cheap indeed.

Want to take her out tonight, push her down the road to the oval and get her on the oval for some nice night shots.
Don't know if I will, weather looks like crap.

Seb have you tried contacting afx paints via gumtree, here is the link http://adelaide.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehicles-Motorbikes-Parts-automotive-se...
Think he does cheap spray jobs some pics of VW s they have done.

Aha smithy68, that is exactly who I contacted! He quoted me $2,000 for a full body off pan spray!

I'm going to go to his workshop and see what's going on.
I'm so excited to get her black, so very excited.

Quick happy snap from tonight, no editing whatsoever, just some tinkering with the ISO on my camera.

Sebastien, be carefull on the respray. Cheap = shit. I have done a lot of cars and painted a few myself and I cant tell you enough that if the prep isn't up to scratch the paint won't be either.
Also the quality of the paint is another big factor. You can use cheap paint but how long will the shine last? My paint alone for my 54 is over 2 grand off the shelf. I can't sure your paint might look goos for 6-12 months but then what happens when it starts breaking out and all the filler starts shrinking back. Also you are going gloss black? The car better be ruler straight or it will look crap. Black shows all so any floor in the prep or the paint will show.
If I was painting your car and was paying someone to do it, I would paint it white again. White hides all. Even some of the bright colour plastic looking colours would be better than black.

I can comment on the quality of the guy at willunga as I haven't seen it but go and have a look at the workmanship, before and after paint, cars that he has painted and see if you can see some that are a year + old.
Then you will know how well the job is done. My best mate is a painter here in adelaide and he is very good and done a few show quality jobs around. He won't paint a car for less than 6K. This does not include paint or panel. Just laying it on.
Do your reasearch.

T54,
Yeah, I'm going down to his workshop to take a look before I book her in. I want to see the quality of the products and the quality of the workshop itself. He currently has 7 cars in, so I'm going to assume he has a good reputation though, or he just does really cheap jobs?

As for the body work, I'll be getting new guards all around and hopefully get some dents beated out. That's about it though, the body of Zelda is pretty straight from what the naked eye can see and I'm sure the panel beater will see the imperfections I can't see. I'm budgeting around $4,000 as a maximum for this bloke at Willunga (if body stuff does need to happen, obviously the $2,000 quote will go out the window). I just want to get her painted and then work on the suspension stuff, so a $4,000 paint job is definitely something that I can do, but something like an $8,000 - $10,000 job is something I definitely can't afford, not yet anyway.

If I want Zelda black before my 18th, then the Willunga bloke is the way to go. Otherwise, it won't happen.

If you go black on a cheap job you will be very dissappointed.I resprayed my scorpion in a chook shed at a mates place with me buying all the etch primer, knife putty,2k hi-fill,2pak basecoat and clear, reducer and hardener and helped my mate block the 2pak hi-fill back and he painted it..That alone cost me 4k. Going a shit job in black for 2-4k now and then respraying it later to show quality is just a waste of your money..If the guy promises the world for $2000 he's full of shit to be honest and all you will get is a slapper job..

I've seen a few cars that he has already done in black and they look pretty decent...

I dunno, I'll take a look up at his workshop before I commit to anything, he's going to knock out the dents as well and get the body as straight as possible.
I'm sure everything will be alright, and to be honest, even if it only lasts for a year, I'll be happy. I just want to be able to take her to a couple of shows and that's about it, maybe do some cruises and photoshoots with a few mates here but that is all.

Will report back when I go down to his workshop once Zelda is back up and running.
Which, I get news of tomorrow. Carbs are being torn down, cleaned, tuned and reinstalled tomorrow.
Will see what happens!

Zelda arrives tomorrow morning.
Very excited. Can't wait to go for a cruise with some mates in her. Will bug bomb her first though, just in case, I hate tiny critters.

Will do a night shoot tomorrow night hopefully with some of my mates, not to sure where, but should come out really nice.
But I just can't wait to get back in her and drive her around, that is what excites me the most.

Zelda is back!

She's a little dirty and has a bit of an exhaust leak, but she's back and she actually drives now!
Looking forward to heading out tonight for some photos and what not, I'm just excited to get back in her and drive to work now!

Edited at 10:40 3/2/2011 by SebastienPeek
Seems the exhaust leak is a little too strenuous on Zelda. Got to work though, but seems it is sucking all power and I still have some nice popping going on. I think people spend a lot of money getting cars to backfire like Zelda is...

Called Siggi at GHR and he's going to take a look at her early next week.

Ollie,
Do you still drive around fine? I'm a little worried about driving long distances in her just in case something goes bad?

It does sound tough, scares a few people though, kinda funny!

I Like the sound too a bit, although my exhaust leak gives a real clacking sound so not real happy with that. new bottom exhaust clamp will fix it soon.

Currently battling an exhaust leak. I don't know if it is because of the pre-heat blockoffs that we made or if there is something else a bit wrong...

Somewhat considering forking out for a Sidewinder Exhaust. It tucks up quite a bit, which is what I am going to need very soon.
What do you reckon? Have had a look at the sounds they make and am excited to grab one.

Try and find the leak. Get the car idling and use a rag or a thong or something and block your exhaust. You engine "should" choke and stall. Feel around for the leak. Sould be easy enough to find.

Was sold a set of dodgy carbs. They are absolutely screwed.
It is my fault anyway, I was told they were dodgy to begin with and that the previous owner couldn't balance them either...

Will be taking them off for now and trying my luck at buying some new ones.
I don't have the money at the moment (poured way too much into the current set of carbs) to get anything so unless someone has some spare dual carbs that are actually working and willing to ship them to me, then I'm all ears.

I know it won't happen, but I guess it's wishful thinking. Originally was though just to be the fuel pump but is something more.
Will see what I can put together in the next few days. I have till Friday to make a decision as to whether I pay even more on the set of carbs that are screwed to get them re-jetted and the sort or if I spend $500 - $700 on brand new ones.

Any ideas, any helpful comments, anything would be great.

No idea, they're just making the engine run like absolute crap.
They're probably running way to rich or something. No acceleration, no power, it's crap, I just have no idea what is happening and it is annoying me quite a bit...

Sometimes I wish shit just went right with Zelda the first time.

There's probably nothing wrong with them physically, just a whole bunch of small tuning issues - jetting, linkage and butterflies not synced up, vac leaks etc.

Unless a set of carbs came off an indentically setup engine it's pretty rare you can just bolt them on and drive.

That's fair enoug Joel.

Do you think it wise I get a carb specialist to look at her before giving up?
Just worried about costs now. Not nice at all, I've spent way too much on this already, was supposed to be a cheapish upgrade.

Won't have anything done till next week sometime which kinda sucks as well.
