last night the engine was removed from the dragster in preparation for stripping & refreshen.

We were very surprised to find such large CNC ported heads after removing the tiny plenums

Yes Brendan I am , but not before Sydney VW drags . I just dont have the time as I still have to strip & refeshen this engine , reassemble Chris Boltons transmission , install & tune Chris Boltons new engine with the new methanol 750dp Holley , assemble Ben Ford' engine , install & tune Bens engine with new methanol EFI , assemble the engine for the WPVW sports sedan & service the carbs , and we need to spend a little time on Cindys rat-bug to tune the new injection system , I also have to fit the new tyres & harness to the dragster & I am currently getting a nappy made for the engine ..... besides all of this I dont think that I should make too many imrovements on the type-1 engine in the dragster till I purchase a new alloy 10mm stud engine case . The existing case is an old mag case with 8mm studs .

adding to my list of things to do ....... Chris bolton has been here every night dismantling & cleaning parts , assembling his turbo system & fabricating brackets , Ben Ford has been here every night wiring & plumbing his injection , dismantled the engine for the WPVW sports sedan , dismantling the engine for my dragster , preparing engine parts for assembly for both his car & the WPVW sports sedan , Dean has been here most nights dismantling the turbo system & plumbing for the dragster , mounting fuel pump , assisting with prepation on all cars , tonight he is stripping and servicing the 48idf webers for the WPVW sports sedan , Cindy has been here most nights assisting Ben , Tonight I have just completed the assembly of Chris' transmission , now I will assemble the axles & brakes ....... 1st image shows just how far the intake gaskets were hanging into the inlet ports .

Tonight we stripped the engine for the dragster and we are pleasantly surprised in what we find and how good condition everything is .
This is what we have discovered so far .......

the engine is 2387ml
late model type-1 efi mag engine case (bored & clearanced)
8mm chromoly headstud kit
86mm DPR welded counterweight wedgemated stroker crank
wedgemated / lightened flywheel
5.7 Chevy journal H-beam rods
94mm Autocraft pistons (380grm each) & long barrels
titanium piston pins (66.5grm each) stock pin is 130grm
web cam 86c (310 duration .546" lift with 1.4 rockers)
straight-cut steel gear set
wide face lifters
CB comp eliminators , CNC ported 46x40 valves
Autocraft 1.4 rockers
deep sump kit

Sounds like a very solid long block there Wayne... Awesome basis... Odd about the intake gaskets being lift like that... Are the ports on the plenums matched to the heads or the gaskets?

the ports on the plenums are the same size as the gaskets .... so I would have to assume that a new pair of much bigger heads had been purchased for the dragster but they did not upgrade the intake system

while cleaning & preparing the engine parts for the dragster yesterday , we discovered that 2 of the 94mm long barrels are cracked down the top spigot ( just the same as Ben & Chris' engines did )

today Allan machined to length some new barrels for me , but I fear that this is going to happen again unless I purchase another set of Pauter barrels for the engine

So while engine parts were being prepared , I did some maintenance on the dragster . I installed a new front floor section as there wasn't one there , Dean mounted the Holley fuel pump & we made new aeroflow lines , then I fitted the new tyres to the rear wheels , and while I had the tyres off the rims I decided to weigh them ...... just 3.255kgs

after fitting the rear tyres I removed the front runners , cleaned & taped the rims , then installed the new tyres , then I installed the new purple Deist parachute & bag . I also replaced some steering pivot bolts and tomorrow will install new front wheel bearings

yes Dave , the old chute still looks in good condition but is very old , the bag is very faded & the deploy spring was missing , so I opted for a new Deist chute which is much more compact
We have been using his type of chute on Ben Fords' supercharged bug & it has been working really well and not too harsh . We have also just installed one on Chris Boltons' turbo bug also

Hi Wayne

Great work on all the cars.

If the government could see how much people spend on preparing old cars to race or just drive on the street they might forget about giving money to car manufacturers and instead give it to motor sport and the old car movement.

All of this work on these cars must help the local economy.

all engine parts are prepared for assembly . On Thursday I reassemble the engine , then Chris Bolton works all night long installing the engine , all turbo system & plumbing , all wheels , new front wheel bearings , all body panels etc

I have had a new nappy fabricated to suit the type-1 engine in the dragster as requested by the tech inspector , as all vehicles that run quicker than 9.0 on the quarter require one to be fitted to the engine .
When I install my big type-4 engine , I will have to get another one made to suit it also . I will trial this one first to see if it gets affected by the engine heat

I did an engine start last night , checked for any fluid leaks before I installed the nappy on the engine in the WPVW dragster . Looks pretty good and hopefully we will never have to find out just how good it works .....

I have received the tech inspection sticker & logbook for the dragster ..... so we are ready to go !!

I am unable to put the dragster on the dyno @ South Coast Rotary as the dragster is too narrow in the rear , so I will have to run it at WSID with the air/fuel meter installed and do some tuning after each run . Not my idea of an ideal situation but I will have to work with that for now . I am hoping that the tune of the methanol Demon carburettor is close as it was used & tuned on Ben Ford' supercharged bug .....
