there is a bracket here to hold the fuel filler line in place its relatively solid so I'm going to use it as a surface to work to.

the old metal is cut away and you can now see the back of the bracket it needs cleaning up a bit.. but its solid. anyway thats all i had time for unfortunately now i have to wait it out till monday.

you can see here that the hole for the fuel filler is slightly smaller on the 72 compared to the 74 so i neeed to section it and use just the bottom third where the rust is worst. Also the flanged edge is larger on the 74 so ill have to grind it into shape later. here it is after ive welded it into place. you can see here the holes i need to fill.

anyway this is the easiest way to fill a hole..
get a nice thick bit of copper.. copper called a non ferrious metal and steel is a ferrious metal. now what that actually means is they dont party together so you can use the coper as a backing for a weld and it wont get stuck to your steel. also it cools the weld down heaps quicker and your much less likely to blow holes in your work.

so here are a few pics of how its done, or rather, how i do it.

because i have used a flat peice of copper against the other side the weld is flat on that side this means you dont have to grind it to shape as much.

now some more trimming and then weld it in. because the car has had a few really dodgy repairs it no longer has the factory shape in this section and the donor section isn't quite the right shape. ive tacked it in and im going to make the two skins meet somewhere between the butchered shape and the factory lines.

now its all welded in. i just need to fabricate a small section where the donor skin was rusted out and fill a few small holes i couldn't avoid. ill use a combination of the coper rod to weld against and sections of steel ill shape for the patches.
