OIL FILTERS


Most people use a full-flow set-up, by drilling holes in cases, clearancing tinware, trying to keep the oil lines away from the exhaust, running long dangling wobbly unprotected oil lines to a cooler near the gearbox, trying to protect the oil filter from being knocked off by reversing into a kerb, etc.

I like bypass oil filter set-ups because they filter down to less than 5 micron, as opposed to well over 40-50 micron for your average Mann/Ryco/OEM, etc, oh and coz it reminds me of my uncle's Oval street racer from the 70s :crazy:. They can also badly restrict oil flow though unfortunately, you have to run them off a separate small oil line from your oil pressure switch so it takes ages to eventually filter all the oil (when it has done though, the oil is C-L-E-E-E-A-N-N-N).

Readily available now in the heavy machinery world is a spin-on oil filter that now does both! COOL! It works as a normal spin-on oil filter, but has a very fine 5 micron bypass oil filter section built-in to the canister. Bloody lovely!
Here we have a filter head, a thermostatic spin-on sandwich plate, and a few brass fittings that will end up in the garden somewhere where brass fitting belong no doubt (I prefer JIC stuff and hefty hydraulic crimps).

Where to mount it though?
Well, in my case I don't need the stock doghouse cooler, as I want to use all the airflow available to get to the heads (aaahhhh, but that's another cunning plan Baldrick! :lol:), so a good old-fashioned 70s-style bypass adaptor will get oil out of the top of the case with really short protected lines.
See that little mounting area on the top middle of pic for the stock OEM electrical test plug?

Yep, that's the size of the filter (with the part number on it if you want to investigate these new dual-flow filters to maybe suit your own application...........). It also holds a heap more oil.


Why do all this when the stock engine strainer will get a stock ACVW past the 100K km mark? Uhhmmm, damn good question! :lol:

A friend in the next town said he had a lathe and a mill, maybe we could use them to get some of the engine parts ready at home instead of the 350km trip to a machinist.

Lathe.
Barrels, pistons, crankshaft, carb venturis (WOW! Is that overkill or what! :lol:)

20 years ago I would have rolled this Superbug down to the Lions scrap metal yard, then gone out and bought a cheapy early-70s Kombi to get to work in until I could find another straight Bug for a hot streeter..

Two heads are better than one.


CCing heads to figure out compression.
I want really small chambers (better flame speed and burn), but have to balance that against engine capacity, cam duration and pinging it's head off! :lol: Just a cheap kit from CIP1 to give me some idea.

The stock VW 113 chamber comes out at about 52cc (averaged across 4 chambers) with the stock 0.055" step. So, if you have a stock 1584cc motor, and run zero deck on the pistons (level with the cylinder tops), you will then get 8.62:1 compression. Throw in a Web163 or Engle 110 and your good to rip. :cool:

If you take the step out like I need to (because I'm not running 85.5mm bore) by flycutting it flat, then the chamber without the step is now only 44cc, which makes compression.....uhhmmmm......lots! (about 10:1 comp with zero deck). I can gain a few cc's with valve seating and a bit of chamber work, so hopefully that won't affect the chamber size I want too much. I'll strip them down and take them into Harris Engines down in Perth to get them to throw in new seats ,take out the guides, and flycut them flat before I line the things up with intent for "cleaning" them up a bit.

I'm also thinking about adding an oil spraybar to direct cool oil (after it's gone around the inlet manifold a few times maybe?) straight at the exhaust valves or exhaust rocker and valve tip.
Maybe bring it into each head here (where the toothbrush cleaner is) then run it across the head under the rocker arm shaft.
What do you rekn?

83mm pistons inside stock thick 1500 barrels.

Stock 1500 pistons are like hens teeth, but Isuzu/Holden Gemini pistons are common as muck, and you can also get decent quality hypereutectics. 83mm is 0.040" O/size. I had them machined for pin clips, and they slide straight onto stock rods perfectly.

I also had the piston tops machined just a touch.
A really rough dummy-up to double-check heights, this is with a 69mm crank.

4.5mm down the hole. So if I double that (9mm) then add the stock stroke (69mm), I get 78mm. That's lucky hey?

Of course, you could also just buy a cheap off-the-shelf thickwalled 88mm slip-in P&C kit for similar capacity, but where's the fun in that!

Torque Tools are the best!


This flywheel bolt was torqued to 270ft/lb 86000km and 42 years ago, and hasn't been touched since.

Light one-handed pressure and it's off, easy-peasy. :crazy:
I rekn I could have used a short 7/16" spanner and still got the flywheel bolt out with an extra grunt.

Yes. torque tools ARE the best.
It's an unfortunate fact of life in the real world, that to get to work over hill and down dale, I have resorted to a hand-me-down car (from my wife!) to use, hoping it will last until my next stoooopid little VW will be done and put to good use. I actually try to use my bike first, but hey, it was below 10*C overnight last week!
I long ago christened the Commode "The Jolly Red Tugboat", due to it's propensity to make all who sail in her bloody seasick (suspension on a Series 1 VX is really awful), oh yeah, and coz it can "tow heavy fings". Well, until it overheats again at least.
*sigh*
So, I still need to fix the thing. A lot. And without the wonder of a VW torque tool, I need to resort to the more usual swearing, big hammers, "freeze and release", big breaker bars, 1/2"drive rattle guns, quite a bit more swearing (Daddy DOES know a lot of daddy words, doesn't he mum?), all to get the hub off and replaced so it doesn't sound like a Cessna going down the road.
Give me a torque tool any day over this lot.........

Things rarely go according to plan.
I've waited 2 months for some basic machining to get done. It sat in the box untouched, so yesterday I went and got it all back.
And because life happens and takes priority over everything else, I'm not prepared to splurge on a decent stroker crank.
Supply difficulties it seems for some other things planned have cropped up as well.

So yesterday I came home from the Vee Dub Centre with 85.5s in a pretty blue box. I was there, and so were these, in stock and at the right price (thanks John and Jackie).
A warm zippy 1600 is WAY better than having it sit there waiting interminably long for either a 78 x 83/88, or till the end of time for a 76 x 92 Oxyboxer.

The boys are pretty happy about getting ready to re-assemble the engine again. I was pretty happy that I have successfully taught them what pistons are and do.........

I'll start with the Solex 34-3 and stock ignition to make it run (it has already run on that carb and dizzy), but add a centremount 2BBL when I start playing with it a bit.
I'm really looking forward to it all again, I enjoy tweaking stock parts, bit by bit they start to go well.
At the end of the day, these few basic parts and time and attention added will make it easily quicker and more fun than the VX V6 Tugboat I have for wintry days now.

I've scraped all the jute and nasty 42 yr old fluff from under the roof, I'll be using new soundproofing all round.
While using the scraper I could feel the dents in the roof turret, so swept off the dirt to have a look...........

Now I know why they make the 17mm allen key for the IRS pivot bolts with a 3/8" drive...........so you can break your ratchet trying to get the bolts out.

What's needed is a bit more leverage, combined with a gentle tap to shock them free.

The paint quality is crap so I have to re-do it, but I think the colour match to VW Off-White headliner is not bad........
