Yes (Matt), when I read those links I thought I must have had my idle mixture adjustment process backward all this time! I thought the richer side
was with the Mix screw slightly further out?? Beware what you read on the internet (when it is written by amateurs!) Ahem...
As Joel said you can use the strobe to set timing for max. advance instead, but you may need to mark that 30deg. or so point on the pulley; there is a
way to measure this around from the existing marks.
[I like to do it from the static ref. point, and then fine tune for max. advance under various conditions/weather, with your choice of octane, full
load, very hot, on the road --- so that pinging is just avoided. Once that's got just right for max. performance, with no pinging, I note the static
and strobe timing points on the pulley for easy future checking. A bit of a long process initially, but good "real" results.]
You should just rotate dist. to set timing, regardless of having points or not (but a normal old dwell meter may not work without points ignition;
maybe the static timing light shouldn't either?).
Good Luck, and it's Goodnight from Him.

Sould i invest in a Numbered/Marked pulley to help with timing adjustment.?
It so confusing trying to work out where these marks are without actually seeing them.
So with the strobe light on,,, the 7.5 mark should line up with the crack in crankcase?
im still a little confused with the timing ignition adjustment process.
I do thank all of you for taking the time over the last week or
so to help me out. The beetle has never run better and i have
learnt so much.
SO THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
