I always wave to other air cooled's and ususally get a wave back, particularly from busses.
I also always wave to Porche drivers. This is fun cause some get it and wave back enthusiastically but most look kind of pissed off.
When VW bought Rolls Royce and Bentley a few years ago I made a point of waving at them too but never got a response.

I feel ashamed to admit it now after reading this post....
but I think I fall into the #5 category... Ive owned a bay camper for 7 years, but only ever looked out for other bus's to wave to.. :S (sorry
bettle's etc) never really noticed any waves from other models though.... Heaps from the kombis... no matter where on the east coast Ive been...
ill have to lift my waving game .. lol

I've said this before when this subject has raised it's head.
The wave is predominately kombi. Even then only the T1 & T2 & there is a reason.
A kombi is an aquired taste, so when you see someone driving a splt or bay kombi, they are driving that car because THAT is the car they want. So 90%
of people driving kombis are kombi fanatics.
And so you acknowlege someone who,s taste in cars is as fractured as yours.
A wave from the T3 driver is rare, & most T4 drivers don't know they've got a VW.
With a beetle, the ratio of beetle owners to beetle fanatics would be closer to 50/50.
They are still a reliable & reasonably cheap mode of transport, but not everyone who owns a beetle is a VW nut.
Modifications make a difference. A baja owner will almost certainly wave to another. Again, similar taste.
But for my waves.
Kombi to kombi is a assured.
Kombi to any other air cooled VW- only if they wave first.
And to answer a question that was asked earlier, anything with a front mounted, water cooled engine - I don't recognise as a VW, so don't bother.
