Let's get the terminology right to start with.
There is no such thing as the "old beetle"
There is THE Beetle, & the new beetle.
The beetle is a design classic, one of the most instantly recognised cars on the face of the earth, along with the mini, the 2cv & of course the
other VW masterpiece, the Kombi.
Then there is the "new" beetle.
This post was originally about comparing the two. You can't. They have nothing in common except the VW badge & even that isn't
interchangeable.
You'd be better off comparing the new beetle with any rice burner, because at the end of the day they have more in common with my wife's mazoodar
than they do with any VW in my collection.
Obviously those who drive them like them, but then if you don't like your car, you piss it off. That's common sense.
But get used to the idea that there are those of us who don't like the new beetle & will say so every time this sort of subject arises.
But it's not a matter of not liking YOUR car, it's not liking THE car.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

Its good to see some people saying that new is as cool as old... Its a shame to see people say that old has more soul... Yeah, newbies arent as
"enthusiastic" as oldies, and dont get involved in club scenes and the like, but a lot of us waterpumpers are happy to encompass the entire scene...
Thats my gripe...
I rode in an R twice and they are all the reviews have stated. Esp the ones that say the R is better than a STI up high!!!
I have driven both old and new, and I would go for new cos of the creature comforts like air, and cos they come as an optional turbo, and they move
with the correct software. I really didnt like where the pillar started on them, though. Made for a cavernous blind spot.
I love looking at olds, but couldnt own one. A type 3 is different, though. All three are impractical for lugging gear. Hence the GTI.

Steve. Classic 85 Mk2 2dr GTI 8v Optioned sunroof and 15"BBS RS alloys. Koni yellow and H&R, Balanced bottom end, flowed top end, Neuspeed

Hey all, firstly I just want to clarify that I didnt want people to compare 'THE' Beetle to the 'NEW' beetle as in whats better because I already
said I love them both and would be happy with either! I just wanted to know your personal experiances, and what you think of each personally. That
comment was for Spook. You don't like the newer bugs? Thats ok, you don't have to. And if I get a new one and people want to tell me they don't
like them that's fine as well. But I do think it would be nice for us all to share the vw experiance without any of that 'snobbery'.
Is that your lil beast Y2K? It's gorgeous How long ago did you get it?
See I think that has just as much uniqueness as the older bug.
And $2.63 homebrand baja I think I have seen your awesome beast around ippy mall and the other day at the petrol station in leichardt, was that you?
Awesome VW. |

You really have to look at it this way. Everybody has individual tastes and affections, or dislikes, for certain styles and makes of cars, obviously
they like one or more particular car's better than another. If this was not the case, then we would all be driving the same generic boring block with
four wheels. Like Spook said, if you don't like it you don't like it. It dose not mean that you are disrespecting the owner, causing intentional
hurt, or saying it is a "bad" car, it's just personal taste.
Any car that is loved by the owner is a worthy car, and I would never say to anyone their car is a heap of crap, I just tell them its a wonderful car,
but I prefer my older one's!
And the new Beetle will be old one day!

hehehe, Aussie Blkbug you sound pretty cool mate. I have had an interesting read these past few days reading everybodies comments! I know that it
comes down to my choice and no one will affect my choice at all. I figure that if I was sure about getting an old bug to do up I would have bought one
about a month ago. So I am pretty set in getting a new one and in the future looking at restoring an older one. Coz I am crazy bought all vw's. And I
really like how you put it Robo, very wise
Thanx everyone!! xxxoooxxxoo |

Subject: New beetle versus the old.
The dictionary defines "versus" as to compare; to weigh one against the other (often in contest).
In my understanding of the english language, that is exactly what you asked for.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

Yep thats my old 'new beetle' in my avatar. Had a head-on in a Lancer so it was time for a bug. Bought her from Melbourne in November 2001, ex demo.
They were very hard to find back then. Later (this year) decided that i was finacially stable enough to upgrade. Got the black turbo back in March(04)
and have never looked back. You only live once, enjoy it as much as you can. I am. It just means that clothes shopping and movies etc have to be saved
for a few weeks.
Hey nbturbo and aussie BLKBUG- Im coming to Melbourne in early August, anything happening down their then? nbturbo, how far are you(Whyalla) from
Adelaide.
Hey Steve isnt the R just the coolest. Al has thrown me his keys twice, i havent been game yet. But next time for sure.
Pinklady good luck and congratulations on your decision.

It's like comparing a record player to a CD player. Do you like the sound of records, such as the cool crackling sound? Do you mind turning it over
after each side?
Playing vinyl records requires more work but the sound has more character and warmth. Bad side is the needle wears out and the records wear out.
CDs on the other hand are relatively noiseless and maintenance free, but characterless. Much less wear on the laser and none on the actual CDs.
I have an old cofee machine, an old turntable with old valve amps, an old beetle and an old wife. Call me old fashioned. (Oh and my house and dog are
old too). This joke is getting old... You get my point.

When my NB turbo was working okay (rare), I really liked it. When it wasn't, well it pissed me off. I got rid of it before the warranty ran out and
started costing me more than just a lot of dealer visits and the occasional flat bed tow.
I wish it hadn't been a complete and utter lemony lemon as I really liked it.

New beetle versus the old
Hi Everyone,
I don't get on here often so when I saw this post i just had to put my 2 cents in!
Ive had my new bettle (his name is Doug) for nearly 2 years now and absolutely love it! I have always loved beetles but the fact that i know next to
nothing about cars has always made me hesitant to get an older one. When the new ones came out i just new i had to have one, starts first time and
with air conditioning...what more could you want?
I know alot of people have different opinions but its just about what suits your lifestyle...or why not have both? Not only is my beetle a great car
its also opened up a whole new circle of friends and its even scored me a man (didnt get that in my barina).
Good luck with your choice pinklady!
Take Care

lol, hello byronbus! Don't worry I love kombi's to, and i thought about getting one a while back (a campervan one) and fixing it all up so it was
beautiful. I just think that out of all of the vw's Beetle are my fave...well, my obsession really ;-) Have you got any other vw's?
Doug is sooooooo cute Mrs Herbie, a nice black or silver nb with 18inch mags would do me fine!
Just outta curiousity I called up RACQ to see about insurance and it wasn't that bad. So I am aiming to get a nb probably by September/October.
Hopefully if I get one by the 26th I will be able to take it on the girls dub day. I just have to save up a little more money. |

I'm with you Stealth, this topic does get old, but the newer members perhaps didn't see it the last four times.
I am heavily into the vintage side of things, yet my search for a NB continues.. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder here folks..
Each to their own. They share the badge, so lets keep an open mind. At least it isn't a Holden..

Hello BenettonVW! And are you today? I don't think this topic gets old I like to hear about everyones cars and there views on things.
It's very nice to hear someone say though that we all share the badge (well I will again soon) so we should all keep an open mind. |
