Finally done! Engine bay , boot area , suspension , gearbox , inner arches , pans etc have been stripped and painted. Only leaves the underside of the pans and a few tricky bits and we're ready to prep for paint. Man this has been a dirty , filthy job , boring too! Saying that at least i have seen every area of the car and check for rust , which has been extremly minimal.
Next few months are now taken up with some body prep , clean and paint engine etc and then hopefully the fun starts when i start to bolt it back together.
Have to say i'm lucky already having IRS , discs , 1776 etc as this quick project LOL is costing alot of $$. Just a quick off my head top ten parts req and rough costing.

44's and manifolds etc - $1000
1 5/8 extractors - $220
Stinger - $50
Drop spindles , new ball joints - $650
Brake overhaul - $400
Carpets - $250?????
Seat , fitting and harness - $500
Dash repaired - $250???
New side glasses and fitting for 1 piece windows - $300
New rubbers , door , rear 1/4's etc - $400

And the list goes on and on and on!!!! 50 series tyres , gearbox mounts and straps etc etc etc. Best not to think about it too much and just plan what i have to do as best as i can. Only problem with that is that you see bargains , stuff you know you'll need , at a good price and have to buy it there and then and not in 3 months time!! Ahhh the joy of playing with vw's!!

Still don't know what the rims are but i've detailed 2 of them already by hand and they look the biz. Reckon by the time i've polished them properly they'll look pretty nice and maybe a little different , i was going to put BRM's on it but we'll see what happens and what it looks like after it's been slammed 2 1/2 inches all round on 50 series tyres.

Some pics to follow this week hopefully and i'm back on line daily again as of t'w.

Keep the faith brothers and sisters and you're vw project will see tarmac again!!!

Dan;)

Yea the windows are probably the biggest job on the whole car. As i'm an auto glazier by trade it's easier i suppose but there is a hell of alot of mods to be done. Saying that i want it to work well as i know it will attract alot of sticky beaks ansd shaking heads by the resto crowd , ha ha !
Youre right , dont think about the money , makes me cry!

New rims !!

Here's a pic of my new rims! Gonna suit the Notch no end and with a little elbow grease will polish up great. You all know what i'm like for polishing things!!!!
Sold my other rims to Kai yesturday which means i scored some trick rims at a reasonable price. Saying that he's getting some nice one's at a good price to so all good as they say. Cheers wrecker67 for the deal , a good days trading had by all!
Just interested to see how much i can lower the notch once they are fitted. They have a huge dish and tuck the 16 x 7s right in! Man the cars gonna look and handle like a slot racer!!! Can't wait!

Just shows you how good these forums are and thats thanks to the powers that be at AVD , nice one AVD!

Mixed emotions!! Adventures of a wanna be car builder!

So you start with a plan. You know what you want to do , how much it's going to cost , how long off the road etc. Bla Bla Bla

Yea right!!!

Get that plan and throw it out the window.

Due to many "bargains" up for grabs that i need i now find my project has got slightly off course. Did throw me off but i have worked my way around things now. Just means the car will have a full interior , detailed suspension etc before it gets it's paint. Some careful taping up required me thinks but should be easy enough. Then body goes off for paint , comes back and off go the guards etc. Idea being i can throw the motor in etc and the last hit will be bolting guards , lights back on and glass and seals. Glass being the major headache.

I'm hoping it's rolling by March at the lastest. Money being the major holdback. I'll need to get my Mechanic mate to fit some new ball joints and we'll do the brakes at the same time. Blue slip here we come!

Had a good w'end and have a few pics. Interior was white and tweed ,headlining white and original seats were rooted. Hi backs from Wrecker 67 , just what i wanted! Satin black is the new colour! Love it
Also got my rims bolted on for the first time!! Took all w'end but i bloody got there , bastard things! So chuffed. They come off in the week as theyre off to be powder coated you guessed it , satin black and will wear 40 series rubber.
Most sus and inner wings , floor pans have had a few coats of silver/grey hammer finish and once car is sprayed i'll add a couple more. looks nice , shame to cover it with carpet!!

Anyway from being a little lost with my Notch i'm chuffed as i can actually start to see something happen and not spendiing hours just cleaning shit and grime and bashing my knuckles!

It's gonna be a hotty for sure and hopefully something a little different , we'll see......

pic's

Cheers Dan

Small update

Mmmmm funny how things go.... NOT!! Bloody , bollox paintwork. Been messed around twice now , thats what you get for being in the trade and after a well priced job!!!!

Any ho looks like end of Jan and it's off for 6 weeks , FINALLY. Most everything else is slowly getting finished , ordered or sent for but still got a million other jobs to be getting on with aswell as making a final build list , ie nuts , bolts brackets , right parts etc.

Here's a quick pic of the motor although far from finished yet. New leads , coil , 6" stacks (mmmm), breather (MMMM) etc etc are still yet to be sorted as is a final lick of grinkle black on a few scratched bits. Amazing what a good clean , squirt of paint and a well placed sticker can do! Extractors and stinger next week hopefully!!!

Only change to plan so far has been that i'm keeping the front door glasses as stock although i've already sent off for the standard ones in a new mid grey tint. Thought it may have been a first and saw some on a car. Wasn't over happy with look ( my opinion and style choice) , suited his car however i am keeping them stock , just replacing the lot...$$$$ !!!!!

May also keep chrome but yet see on that , depends on a few things yet.

Happy Xmas garage play you lot!!

Dan

Before.....

Progress!!

Well rear sus is now cleaned and detailed as is rear bulkhead , inner guards , hubs etc etc. Glad thats done!! New shocks and a few new sus rubbers and thats the rear almost done.
Engine bay has been modded to except the type 1 44's on long manifolds and give a little more room to work. Finished the bay in black grinkle coat which looks awesome. Engine is also painted same paint and silver.
I have modded the rear valance for a host of reasons. firstly the valance doesn't match , different cutouts for exhaust and looked odd. So i've cleaned the lines up , still a little tidy but almost finished. The extractors ( Turbo Thomas) i'm using are being made so the merged collector actually sits higher , exits on a slight angle and clears better. Having the extra space allows for that and also frees up alot of space for my custom muffler which will be probably be made up using a yoshimura bike carbon muffler ( yet to check flow). Lastly it will show my extractors off nicely , how vain!!
Just waiting for a mate to appear and the motors back in . Can't wait , a turning point!!!!

The paint costs are the only thing holding the Notch back but it's off in a months time eventually and will be gone for 2 months. Gives me time to get everything ready ( is anyway!)and work on the 61 for rego. I'll miss the Nationals but there's always next year! It's all time and money!!

Cheers Dan;)

By the time i have connected up the breather box, electrics and fitted a new ignition it's pretty much done . Just extractors and thats the motor taken care of til CBB get to tune and dyno it!
Only need paint , interior fitting , seals , rego and about 6K!!! :P

Dan looking sweet mate gota love the fact that with a notch you can have those carbies. Its realy going to set it apart from the rest.

I only wish my square was in as good nick still have lots of weilding to do after our talk the other day Im starting to look for a cheep bug for dayly transport driving it around as is sucks and it means on weekends I have to factor in puting it back together for monday.

Its amazing how good your engine has come up. Also could you post some more pics of your rear valance so I can see how it works.

Again great stuff will get some pic's of my pig up next week hope to get new seats trial fitted this weekend before I finish cleaning up interior for weilding.

Nige cheers for asking. Looks like i MAY have another type 3 coming. Not saying too much as yet , not 100% but have had to stop buying parts for the Notch to fund this purchase. Sorry for letting as few folk down but no choice really.
Need a car asap and no rush with the Notch . All panels have now been fully sorted , sitting in primer at panelshop. Body goes off in a month when i finshed grinding a few things. Paint is bought , Merc Zulcon Silver , lovely bright bluey silver , bloody expensive though.
Bumpers are waiting collection , re chromed and have flat4 T3 overiders now!!
New interior is all ready to go in and motor is just waiting the extractors and me fitting the new ignition. Glass is now sorted aswell. I also have 4 BRM's with moon bullets under my bed!! Apart from some "S" trim , new ball joints rubbers and a brake overhaul , oh yea and painted it's ready to get put back together and sent to CBB to have engine serviced and carbs dyno tuned. The worst is over and soon the fun of bolting it all back together. Ready for spring time!
I'll post when it comes back from paint , cant wait!

Thanks for the interest

Dan;)
