CT...I understand how your thinking....I have been in the same frame of mind for years! I ave a sweet 60 sitting in the shed, that I have keeped for
just the same reason. Well I haven't written off the car yet, it has just started to rust away! The body never was perfectly straight anyway, so the
next project after the SVX conversion will be....Total rebuild of the bug, but maybe with the EJ20T transplant. I have to keep up with my brothers
EJ20T powered notch after all!!!
I have loved your oval from a far (WA actually!) for some time, keep it up and keep going around those Porsches!!

Thanks Simon,
The '54 may end up a bog stock resto. Like yours it is probably a better body than the one on my restored car.
I'm looking forward to doing some supersprints next year because I didn't get enough runs this year. I broke a rocker clip at Oran Park which did a
little damage to a valve tip. That took me out of the last two sprints DOH.

Hey CT,
If you do not mind me asking...how much was the oval....I am looking for one to paint and change to my pan...the now white, once green aero has a
little more cancer than I would have persisted with..not major, but there!

How much was the '54? The same as your DRD heads.
The poor thing is living outside until I can find somebody to buy a 1970 lancia fulvia sport with a zagato body.
For you it would be a hard decision to cut something that straight and rust free up to put a Suby donk in it.
If you do it just don't tell any purists.
I'll probably restore the '54 eventually and keep it the unexciting beige colour it was originally painted in.
Why don't you look for a '76 or an L bug?
Are you going to change your ID to boofEJ20?

This is my other oval.
It only has 3 stickers on it: one Yokohama sticker on the windscreen (because I work for Yokohama) and other two stickers are small NSW Porsche Club
stickers on each rear side window because this is the club I belong to.
Craig, if you're not going to say anything nice don't say anything at all.

Back together
I haven't driven this thing since September.
Now it's coming back together wtih a new front beam with adjusters from CBB and drop spindles from CB performance.
In this shot I'm figuring out where to set the bump stops so that the tyres don't hit the guards at full suspension compression.
My last set up was bottoming out the balljoints which is bad. I'm glad I pulled it apart. It won't happen this time with the drop spindles as the
suspension geometry stays close to standard.
The biggest challenge is makeing the extra negative camber and extra offset all fit snugly without fouling the shock tower or guards.

Nice shed CT! I'm soooooo jealous!
What rubber U running on that....I know they must be Yokies, but what is the name of'em? And sizes too please.....I'm looking to upgrade my hoops
soon, and I'm open to suggestions!
By the way, is that beam narrowed also? If so, by how much?
I have an IRS/BJ pan, I might fix up for my '60 rebuild, which means I'll problably sell the '64 (SWINGER/LP) as a go'er, to finance the
project...
Seems like a logical thing to do. Start afresh, instead of mod what you go......
Oh where will it end? :o

With all the money in the engine bay, why don't you go for EFI with a custom race map and electronic ignition? It'd give more performance than the
IDAs, and probably use less fuel (although that's hardly the point in racing
Nice looking car - very neat.

Hi Humpty,
I'll try and give you an anser as to why I've chosen the tyres and front beam that I have. I've got a feeling it will be long though.
The tyres I've chosen are 195/50R16 Yokohama A048 LTS tyres. The LTS stands for Lotus because they are an original equipment tyre for the front of
the new Lotus Elise Exige. The code A048 is for the tread pattern which matches our new A048 R spec tyres.
The trouble is 195 is still a wide tyre for the size and weight of the car. It's hard to get R spec tyres up to the required operating temperature in
the short supersprint format.
Sizes for R spec tyres such as 195/60R15 no longer exist in the Yokohama range. My only choices were as follows:
195/55R15 which is too small and illegal.
205/50R16 or 205/55R16 or 205/60R15 all these are too wide which means they would be even more difficult to heat up and difficult to fit under the
standard guards. Not only that but I'm starting to understand a new problem. Most tyres are too heavy in their construction for a beetle. They are
designed for a much heavier car and the sidewalls are too stiff.
The tyres I chose are constructed as a road and race tyre. They have a low load rating because they are designed for a car with a similar weight to
the beetle. The aren't quite as sticky as a R spec tyre because the compound is road oriented and they not as aggressive in their construction as an
R spec tyre.
I haven't had the front beam narrowed because I want the handling characteristic of a wide track. It's just the combination of parts that I use that
allow the tyres to fit under the guards. That and a fair bit of negative camber which, the tyres tell me, that I need on the front.

Hey CT had a ride in the Rizzomobile yesterday and you are going to need a come to God button to keep up with him on the straights. Jak quaintly calls
it "happy healthy horsepower". Sell him a set of Dunlop Auquajets and tell him they are the ducks guts for racing!

Legality
Hi Jimby,
How's your oval going. Have you converted it from a drag car to a circuit racer yet?
That doesn't solve the overall diameter issues.
My 195/50R16s are only 601mm.
Legally I need 615-645mm (15mm either size of 630 the standard OD)
The 195/55R15s are only 595mm.

Cheers for that CT....The more I think about it, the more it looks like the way to go.
This of course is a long terma for me as Uni starts soon.....Yes I'm what is called a 'mature (?) aged student'! Family, mortgage, uni, work, 2
street VW's and a ECHO....Man I need another 2 of me to get the projects done!
Maybe I should ditch the street car/race car thing and get that FV going for the next sprint/autokhana season instead.....Imaging that with my 110hp
1776! Might be an EZR project!
Keep it up, I'll just be watching from a far!

Update
So much for keeping up with the Rizzos!
Jak can do a Subaru WRX conversion faster than I can rebuild a beetle engine.
The engine is back together. It's the first one I've built.
I started it up and ran in the cam on Monday night and it sounded real sweet (Well to me at least. Not the neighbours!). Hopefully I'll drive it
soon.
If it truly is heads that make the power this will prove it.

Hey Fullnoise, heads is definitely where the power is! Next time the heads are off get some chamber unshrouding done & a flow test will show
improvements...even though comp ratio will be lower.

Hopefully I'll get my times down with the improvements I've made.
1. More camber at the front
2. More castor for high speed stability
3. Softer front end to heat up the tyres provide more weight shift on to the front for better turn in.
4 More horsepower from the heads & cam
5. Better driving after learning a few techniques from the Holden Driver Training school.
6. Better clutch.
The goal is for 1:15 @ Wakefield Park, 0:53 @ Oran Park Sth and sub 2 minutes at Eastern Creek.
I don't know about Oran Park GP because I've never really had a good run there.
It's amazing how the other racers have developed their cars in the off season. It's great because we all seem to like developing our cars as much if
not more than actually racing them.
All the cars are different and that's probably typical of car modifiers.
Rudis car has seen a number of engine combinations and is definately pushing the boundaries of stock stroke beetle engines. He's also made suspension
changes. Have a look how low his car is at the rear. It must work though because he's the guy to catch.
Deiter's car will now have more horsepower from an interesting and well engineered engine (with dry sump system).
Jak's car is part WRX as we know.
Paul's car is morphing into a WRX too but is unlikely to make the track this year.
What's JVL been up to?

Hey CT,mate sounds like you have rebuilt the car, isnt motorracing fun! Iam still making up my mind on a couple of good deals with computers and
electrical work.EMS have come to the party with a air craft sparky to do the work but my gut feeling tells me to go Motec.Working on a carbon bonnet
and Lexan door windows to stop the draft entering the car.Hopefully to make 3 Porsche meetings this year with some reliability.JVLRacing

I'll be lucky to have half Jaks horsepower..
Well the car is up and running again. The engine feels quite different, like it's grown an extra testicle. It also wants to rev but I won't let it
because I'm still running it in.
I've just got a wheel alignment from a bloke who apparently knows his stuff. Now I will be confident enough to give the car a blast in third and see
how the new engine feels.
Here's a pic with black Fuchs.

An extra testicle ? Really ? lol
You must be itching to let it loose eh ?
Looking the goods as always. Have you rejetted the carbs or anything yet ? I assume it will see some dyno time maybe too ?
Would love to be able to justify the time and money. Maybe one day.
