Drifting is usually held over only a certain section of a track and not continuously lap after lap with the throttle held wide open as in blasting round an oval.
2 cars at a time do the circuit in a shootout with each guy going fdrom the front in turn.

The secret to successful drifting is MECHANICAL GRIP and HIGH SPEED.
An engine that is responsive and has gobs of mid-range grunt and stomp is the key.
The car MUST be very neutral in handling and most importantly, balanced to get the speed and importantly, the control whilst maintaining drift.

The notion of fitting hard, skinny cheese cutters to the wheels just does not work.
Scope out some pix of any good drift cars and you will see seriously wide and importantly, sticky tyres.
Rigid suspension, altho promoting sliding, seriously unbalances the car and does not work. It actually reduces mechanical grip which is the opposit of what is required.
So many guys have found this out the hard way. The slide is easy to initiate but very difficult to maintain and requires sudden throttle off to control the slide.......no good.

Sorry lads, but likening some wet weather sideways shenanegans is not even vaguely close to actual drifting!!

I suggest you keep your eyes open for a "proper" drift meet at a national level and behold the car setups and delicate control of the cars these clowns have!
Amazing to say the least!!!! In-car footage is sensational with feet dancing on the pedals, fanning the clutch and the occasional grab of the handbrake to initiate a big backside in at high speed!
Drop everything if some real heavy hitters come out to play!! You wont regret it.

A couple of professional drifters came down to Baskerville a while back and the level of preparation and the demonstration of precision car control left me pretty much speechless.
Those of you that know me well enough will realise that that (speechless) is close to impossible!!!!!!
You realise these guys are not mindless hoons burning up tyres like the singl spinner dickheads in the carparks doing "doughies" but real talented drivers who just happen to participate in a slightly "less conventional" form of motorsport!

Awesome stuff when you actually see it happening!!

Why do you say that??? They have been having drift competitions/racing here for years...When they get the "proper" full blown circuit here in the next couple of years it will be even better...:bounce

Drifting could be possible in vw but you would definately need big
HP @ mid range revs & lots of torque, lengthen your wheelbase
very tight mechanical lsd,low as possible stiff as possible.
Ive been one of the judges @ a state round down here in SA
The most exciting car was a clapped out looking VB commodore
with a 600HP V8, with about 10 sets of 13 x 185 stock rims.Whilst in fourth gear,He got the most smoke, biggest angle & fastest speed during drift than anyone,He kicked the arse of all the big budget imports, embaressed alot of them, mind you hes an ex rally car driver he had a lot more skill than most of them.
A book which I think would help you heaps is FRED PUHNS HOW TO MAKE YOUR CARHANDLE..

Hehehe thanks M8!

I love ANY kind of motorsport but i especially love the kind of motorsport that attracts crowds, appeals to their imaginations and get their juices pumping!
Having a howling drift car, frying its tyres in a delicately balanced drift almost perpendicular to the direction of the track just has me hooting for more!
As a diehard circuit racer, i really admire the talent of the dudes behind the wheel of a really hell drift machine.
Awesome stuff!

D1, the official drifting competition normally held in japan, has been brought to the USA. Ive been to a few D1's here, and Formula D, and a few drift days. It is amazing to say the least. On the professional level of the japanese drivers, its just insane what they do, i mean they are sliding sideways entering a turn at over 70mph! with only a couple of inches between the rear of the car and concrete barriers. The last one i went to wasnt long ago, but it was the first time a US driver beat the japanese. As you can tell, im a big fan :P
