Yesterday managed to remove the L-shape early style seat rails from the passenger side.

Also finished welding in the new drivers side pan half.

Come nightfall the new (second hand thanks to nbturbo) T-shape seat rails were welded into position.

Pedal assembly was bolted in position to determine correct locations for mounting bolts and pedal stop (big thanks again to Gary - nbturbo - much appreciated!).

Today the stripping process began (not all down to bare metal as its not necessary) - Rust Bullet will be applied tomorrow, looking forward to seeing how it goes on!

Tonight I just finished applying sikaflex seam sealant on top and bottom to ensure moisture doesn't find its way into the seams, causing rust down the track for the new owner (who ever that will be!).

First coat of rust bullet went on this morning - just about to apply the second....so far I am very impressed with the product. Preparation is so much easier than por15 and much less time consuming. I will have to wait until it cures and reassembly starts before I can comment on its durability etc, but so far so good. The silver is a really nice colour, and although it doesn't self level as well as por15, the brush strokes are not too obvious (and you can spray it or roll it anyway).

Bit more progress today - got the underside of the pan painted in Rust Bullet. Still very happy with the product - I used one full tin (one quart) and still have a little left, and that included painting the spring plates and misc other suspension bits.

First pic shows the other beetle looking on jealously feeling neglected :o

I can't wait either, the split will hopefully be something pretty special. Depending on how this resto goes and how much the bug will sell for, that will dictate when the split resto will begin and what path it takes! I'm hanging to be driving around in a splitty ;)

C'mon Cam - the race is on - I have to finish this beetle before I even think about getting the splitty out of storage so you have a pretty good head start! Also want to build a garage out the front before the split comes home! You'll have to drop by some time for a beer.

On another note, I have decided to get the 1916 finished and sell it separately to free up some funds to get the rest of the beetle finished - I will be slotting in a healthy 1600 into the bug later.

So it was time to clean up the case as it was a little dirty - the longblock was assembled when I bought it with very few hours on the clock (all receipts for the rebuild from mick motors were provided). A bit of a polish, some new tinwear (fan shroud and cylinder covers) and things are looking nice again.

Dual 40mm dellortos will be used (they have the CB performance update kits with horizontal discharge tubes already installed) - time for a quick rebuild. More pics when things progress further.

Both carbs have been rebuilt with new kits put through them and some preliminary adjustments made. Just have to modify the cylinder head tinwear to clear the manifolds (got too late to make noise tonight!). Also replaced the manifold studs for longer ones to account for the thicker bases of the manifolds.

Hopefully Saturday the tinwear modifications should be done and they may even be painted (See how time goes).

Did a trial fit of the carbs and tinwear (had to clearance the cylinder head covers slightly for the manifolds) - glad I checked before painting!

Second pic is mid way through primer stage.

Third just shows the shroud which was slightly roughed up with 400grit wet and dry, then wax/grease removed.

I was going to go gloss black but decided to be a little different and went a dark silver metallic.

After primer went down it was hit with 800 wet and dry to provide a smooth surface for the base coat. Two coats of that were applied followed by a couple of medium coats of clear. Turned out pretty glossy.

As mentioned before, due to funding restrictions I will most likely have to sell this 1916 (will be a bolt in for whoever buys it)....this will help to finish the remainder of the resto. So stay tuned. I may install the engine in my other beetle to satisfy potential buyers how it runs.

Thats it for a couple of weeks (away for work for a week or so).

Not a whole lot going on lately since I've been trying to sort out the new cooling system on the type IV in my bug. But I've been sourcing some new parts for the 1916cc engine, and modifying the breast plate to block off the heater outlets/risers etc for a smoother look.

More updates to come as it gets ready for paint. Hopefully the engine will be ready to fire up on an engine stand soon so any potential buyers of the engine can hear it running. Cheers

Nah sorry mate I can't sell it separately, but feel free to buy it as part of the complete bolt in 1916 package that will be for sale as soon as I finish the assembly!

Guess who's been shopping? Luckily my dog gave the nod of approval for the purchase - she thinks the 1916 will make someone very happy indeed. By the way I will have it running on an engine stand for people to hear it running.

The 1916 is getting closer now - an original german alternator pulley is used (along with bosch alternator) - they pulley will be repainted (as well as crank pulley). The fan shroud gives off a nice reflection!

The second pic shows the completed welded breast plate - some filler will be applied to smooth it all out before paint is applied. Carbs are in place - linkage to come then exhaust.

mmm that dark silver metallic looks awesome, is that just done from rattle cans? Is it acrylic or 2pac? Me thinks my fasty would look good that colour......whats the paint code if its 2pac?

G'day Pat, It is two pack base coat/clear coat. It is a really nice colour. I'll have to see if the code is on the tin and I'll U2U it to you - the heavy metallic makes it a little hard to spray but not too bad if you/your painter has worked with metallics like this before. No pearl makes it a little easier. I can't remember if I had the original colour modified by the paint shop (there is a possibility)...but I'll see if I can figure it out.
