Did you check the gen pully was not chopped out in the centre?
This can make the motor shutter like crazy and if often thought to be the clutch.
Just an idea:thumb

Do you mean in where it bolts on to the end of the crankshaft?

The pulley on the generator.
Sometime the pulley on the generator can get chopped out in the centre, and when you rev it it moves out of balance and will make the motor shutter.
Everything 36HP !
Change over king and link spindles

The generator pulley looked good with no signs of wear around the woodruff key area. It certainly feels like a definite clutch shudder (just pity we
couldn't fix it!).

definate clutch end, in time with rpm, I still go with the flywheel/ clutch mech being out.
the clutch gone at newish engine life also makes me think think isnt a recent issue now.
