I'm happy to help:

Don't waste money on yet another respray;

Install a factory BJ front end to get rid of the bumpsteer you admit to having on a straight track in your CADCAM front end; OR stiffen your existing front suspenion to reduce bump-ster on suspension movement

Install a cheapo 2-litre Kombi gearbox and turn back the boost to keep it alive;

Use a simple computer (eg a Delco, Microtech, Haltech or MoTeC (I know of a very, very good Microtech tuner who does a lot on international work) without any datalogging shite on it to confuse anyone.

Then, actually get your it onto a track and see if you can have more fun - or run quicker - than a street beetle with less than $4K invested in its chassis/handling because having 300+bhp ain't no good if you can't get it to the track!

Yeah, but I think a little rust under the window rubbers and some shopping trolley dents after more than a decade of regular use can be tolerated...

Magazine coverage - you might be better aiming for bitumen, rather than paper at this stage

Lay off.

Give JVL a break!

Each to their own.

Think about how many modifications are on JVLs car!

Now think of the fact that you go and bolt a standard reproduction part on a VW and it needs to be modified to fit.

Now think of what happens when you bolt a modified part on. If it just fits then you're lucky. But then you have to modify 3 other parts to make the new part work with the existing parts.

Like the Torrens brothers I've followed a simple formula for modifying a beetle. The basic bolt-on formula that includes Weber, koni, sway bars, type 3 brakes etc fitted to an IRS pan has been followed for decades. Even this combo takes ages to sort out and get right.

I can't fathom how many head-scratching moments JVL would have trying to make his car work properly. Just about every component fitted has followed no proven formula.

The car is a work of art and it has already made it to the track. That's more than I can say for the dozens of "Gunna"s who've said they're building a bug to race.

I got my car on the road in 2001 and I think I've finally got it how I want it after 5 years. If we suggested that JVLs car has 10 times more modified parts. I expect the development to take 50 years.

Keep up the good work JVL.

2056 Craig? That's only if I was building it!

Hmm but then I'd be too old to drive and end up with "Lest we forget about the project" on my grave's head stone.
