more updates - cage tin
Big Dollars for this job!! I spent all day sunday and more hours tonight doing cage tin template's for front .
All done in cardboard then I will transfer to alloy sheet.
Alloy will beheld with Self-ejecting fasteners ,with mounting brackets welded to frame work .
Steering done finaly ! Alloy solid bar (20mm) used with
1/2 inch unf rod ends (left hand very expensive -tap $75dollars) .Front travel ended up at 45mm ,extended out . Probable front will have straps and 30
mm travel .
Feels reel nice to steer( lite)
After front tin - try motor in for some measurements !

Looking great Pete....I think yellow, black and say silver highlights/pinstripes around black graphics would look cool.
It's always hard to choose colour schemes!

Should of rung me about the tap mate!! I think we have one at work
As for colours how about orange and white!!! On a winner with that one!!
Colour scheme looks good. Have a look at the yellow some of the Alfa romeo's came out with especially the Spyder. Looks like a solid Yellow till you
get the sun reflecting off the body lines and it's a really nice metallic. Definately silver or even chrome pinstrips/highlights on the black
stripes. With the black for the stripes honda had a black a couple of years ago with a gold fleck in the clear coat over the colour. Looked
awesome!!!
Any more ideas give me a call mate. Be only too happy to offer ideas!!

16/5/07
Good day today in shed ,new Alumastar Weld Racing(8inch) wheels arrived ,so straight down to fit tyres at tyre shop. At home they fit fine just a
little guard edge to trim .Rims are 8inch wide with 4inch back space, chev stud pattern.
I have change wheel studs next becouse dics come with 14mm studs (vw style racing rim ) .I need 7/16 studs to fit open-end weld wheel nuts. Ring
Rocket in sydney for these .
All so try fit motor ,so I can work out afew jobs ( exhaust to clear oil pump , rear guards to be trim for engine lid ,carb air box and final body
trim under rear window for spoiler ) I like how high the carbs and engine sit to guard line !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!cool !!
Waiting on race gearbox to be built then I can paint and fit , all rear suspension .
Next big job is to make boom box (engine cover ) Templet first out of cardboard ,then alloy.

Picked up the front finally last week-end ,my mate had a couple other larger jobs on first .
I had him fill in head lights ,rear edge made for looks and to help push air ,wind out from under guard ,remove running board shape from rear of
guards , redo mounting braket undre front nose .Best of all mates rates on job.
This week will build new mounting bracket for front and start filling and sanding front.
Other jods on go are Rod's motor out for a fresh up , and looking at another motor for choptop ??????

Nice stuff Pete. Maybe you should invest some money and get a few different renderings done by the guys that did the images of Rod's *cough* Ford -
those renderings looked awesome. Maybe that could give you a few more options on paint schemes?

Over long week-end ,made mods to old front support and changed fuel pump bracket plus fuel lines .Have to buy some more fuel fittings this week for
return line .
Last week had exhaust lengthen to clear dry sump pump.
I hope Rod (48ida) doesn't look in his cupboard as his old exhaust is missing .2inch ron lummus merged header.:P
Next big job is start making rear interior tin for rear of car ,will steel a mates folder soon for alloy work.

Pagey's Tranny
Here are some shots of Pete's Tranny so far.
It will use a Rhino Case,
JC aluminium spool, SAW axles, Chromoly pinion retainer,
FTC mainshaft set, and Gem 3rd and 4th.
It will have all the usual : steel forks, hard keys, HD side cover, and normal attention to detail that these things need.
First step was to set the preload on the carrier(spool) bearings.
VW has a special tool for this, but generally it is between 6 to 10 thou preload and is measured as 'rolling resistance'.
Once the shims are calculated, the total thickness of the two shims must remain the same,
while you eventually adjust the crownwheel across to set backlash.
For the Pinion I took a guess on the shim thickness in the middle range that I have,
and proceeded to change the carrier shims until I had minimal backlash.
Factory is 6 to 10 thou, I like to use zero to 2 thou.
At this point I applied bearing blue to the teeth, and test spun the pinion to transfer the pattern onto the teeth.
I did this whilst loading up the crownheel to simulate load.
As luck would have it the pattern was just how I like it.
Sometimes I have done this process and spent a whole day, this time it was only about 4 hours including washing all the parts.
I also had to machine some clearance on the pinion plate for the wider FTC first gear,
and also the 'slider' needed .5mm off the first gear side,
and .25mm off the second gear side to get full engagement on the wider gears.
At this point I can now continue to set the end float of all the gears.
This can be done with machining, or shims, or a combination of both.
I used to set the end float much tighter than standard,
but with the strength of modern aftermarket gears, I believe this can lead to more trouble than it is worth,
and so I now keep them at minimum stock clearance of 6 thou.
Setting first gear:
Setting second :
Third:
And 4th :
If Pete gives the OK I will list the ratios.
This type of transaxle normally takes about 20 to 25 hours to do.

Crownwheel and Peanut is 4.125
First is 3.556
2nd is 2.357
Third is 1.695.
Fourth is 1.217
Depending on how the car performs we may step up to a 3.875 diff at a later time
and coicide that with a 1.318 fourth gear.
But this will be a good known starting point.
