I am hoping to go to a test and tune at the end of the month.
I have been trying to get some work done around the house in preparation for some new concrete floors,(got a bit done!)
but no Volksy action is depressing, so I have spent a little time,
and a heap of money on some Volksy stuff.
With the changes to the car, especially the 2-step and smaller diameter tyre,
I decided to fit some wheely bars, just so that I don't waste the trip to the track.
With the overall tall ratio that I had with the 28 tyre, wheel-stands were uncommon,
so until I can get into the tranny and change the ratios, this will do the trick.
I have been studying different wheely bar designs for a while,
on both VWs and also conventional design cars and believe,
depite previously published theories,
that the bars SHOULD BE MOUNTED TO THE SUSPENSION.
So to test my theory, I have mounted the top to a point near the top shocky mount,
and the lower point near the lower shocky mount.
There will be a tube between the two sides at the wheel's centre line.
These bars were part of a barter exchange with Peter Page,
and are vintage "Racer Brown" sprung deals.
I had better get down stairs and finish that installation!

Can't wait for the pics Dave. What is the diameter of the tyre you are running now - 26in?
I know you have probably documented it before (so sorry to cover old ground) but in summary what sort of effects did that have on 60ft time, rpm at
top end, and your general perception of how the car behaved?

PS I found that pair of 66 euro round push button handles - can't remember if they are the ones you like/need but they're yours if you need them
(plus I still have your pressure plate adaptor ring which I need to return).

These are the upper and lower mounts.
The top shock mount is steel(not cast Iron) so it welded quite well.
The lower mount is welded and braced near the lower shock mount.

Hi Alan, the tyres are now 26" tall, and made about 500rpm more at the end of the track than the 28's.
In theory the accelleration should be better right through the run.
There is also a weight reduction at the diameter which all helps.
Because the wheely bars are mounted so far forward there is very little hanging out the back.
Hopefully this will mean less tripping over them, and not having to remove them when loading the car on the trailer.
Unlike conventional VW style bars, the wheel postion should change very little as the car squats on take off.
Only the tyre squat, and front rise should change its position.

The actual tread is 8.5" on these and around 9.5" across the side wall.
These dimensions and the height can vary a little depending on rim width.
eg, on an 8" rim the tyre would have a lower height and wider side wall
than if it were in a 7" rim.
Lower gearing and loose extension on the shocks can make a stocker wheel stand if the tyre and track are there.
I am trying to keep the car launching as flat as possible using the suspension and gearing,
and the bars are only there if it pops up by mistake.

Hey Dave, so I assume to help stop the front wheels from lifting you stiffen the front end (ie. shocks with a stiffer extension stroke)?
With regards to the wheelie bars, (not that I have to worry about them for some time yet!), Is there an optimal length for the vw application? I
understand that if they are too short they can unload the rear tyres too quickly (ie. assuming that they are hit hard on the launch although I know
you are only using them to prevent the wheelie going too high)?

The shocks I am using are stock extension, whereas most guys use something that has a very fast extension.
The old bars I had before(in faster days) were about 50" long(1.27m) and used a thin wall small diameter tube to allow some flex over that length.
They were mounted to the traction bar at the back of the engine.
Most guys mount them under the belhousing to a bracket that bolts to the forks.
Unless they are very flexible, they WILL unload the chassis...which may NOT be ALL bad.
I mounted mine to the suspension points to try and stop the unloading....we will see how it works.
These ones ar about 1m from the mounting eye to wheel centre.

Is the passsenger side lower than the other or is this the camera angle. If it is, is this to help counter the torque of the engine on launch.

I will do a final adjustment when it is on flat ground.
It is still on the stands also.
I will let you know when I run next, just saving up for fuel now. My arse is still sore form the cost of the new roller cam!

Yes I was thinking of doing that James, but not enough engine power to turn one of those dynamos,
