i dont think ANYONE would have anything bad to say about a 2.5litre STI engine...

Dudes, for the first time went an drove The Notchess today. First she wouldnt start, after looking on the passager seat. there was a note "
turn on ignition, at the same time toggle switch behind drivers side. She works After 15 minute i found the switch, buried in the vertical carpet
out side the baterrycompartment
The outer body/paint is in superb nick. She goes well and first impression, very nicely for stock. Still got numberplates from nsw so no need to
get permit/insurance at $100 to get it home. Gamble. Interiors CRAP and so is the dash but the underpinnings excelent in that there is no rust
anywhere. Took it for a drive round the block (she's at the truck yard still} and what a trippy but short drive. Im 6ft and i felt high in the cock
pitand close to the windscreen( good vision), The sports sterring whell gave an unussual fell , the motor pulled adequatley, but crickey this is like
no other car ever built, must be the motor in the back, the riding position, i cant explain but memorys or not of This car put's a grin in yar body.
It does!
Proud owner!
I'll think about the rest tomorrow.
btw bought myself a tig, cigweld transtig 200.
cheers Rich
btbtw, i need to build a shed for this project to happen.

Thanks for sharing my enthusiasm gulll. NOt!
I have a 2.5 sti block sorted and being built (na to begin with) . now the gearbox option. No g50 yet but bugger the money thats still the plan. WHere
can i get an adapter kit? and i can i expect extra problems with this gearbox conversion that i wouldn't find converting it to a beetle IRS. There
are a few threads and info pages on the g50/beetle swap but cant find one for the type 3.
One step at a time.
Cheers Rich

Best i can do is this photo , I'm paying for it tomorrowand will arive.
These are the specs
STi block $3200
Forged pistons $900
Forged Rods $700
Competition bearings $400
Balance $250
Measure clearances, check and dummy assembly $150
Torque plate Hone $200
This combo owes $5800 to the seller (not including assembly costs)
Im getting it for $4500 including build. All brand new. The rest ill build myself. Like i said i'm going for n.a to begin with but obviously now
with future options.
Sourced a g50 01 today for $5500.surposed to be in good order. Comes with a 3month waranty. I told them it will be a while before its up and running
so with conformation from the local "blueplate mechanic" they'l start the waranty when the car is on the road.
The g50 01 is the right choice yeah? comments.....
teatime

Any one got any tips or links on installing the g50 to the IRS ? Looks to me like the center off the torsion tube could be cut and fabbed to take the
extra length of the g50.
Your thoughts ?
Should this be a new thread?
And yep its more than i bargained for.

Yeah seagull i looked at Steves page today. Thats a swingarm isn"t it? Iwouldnt know > Just i couldnt match steve's photos too the irs under
the notch today.
By the way way steve i found your bug site and pics by googleing "vw g50 torsion bar". Good one mate!.Your paving the the way for the future
generation of vwcakes. What is it irs or swing arm?
I kinda got scared whiler talking to John Sherman (top bloke and a wealth of information) about the g50 conversion and its complexities. The g50
conversion alone could easily swallow 12k against $4000 i was quoted today for 2l kombi box, rebuilt with albin..? gears from leons motors. I'll
hold back on the gearbox no with a little patience i think.
shermans got good bits too like kits allowing stud pattern for different mags and he can make up a kit for g50. Thanks seagull.
So it is ok to butcher the center of the irs torsion bar where the front of the gearbox is mounted? Thus allowing for extra room. I,ve got to
get a camera.

Hi
Lets see photos of your work before you call me a butcher.
Its IRS, I'm using swing axle (40hp/1500) length torsion bars which are shorter, this allows the gearbox to move forward into the area where the
original torsion bars were anchored.

Sorry man stupid choice of words no offence whats so ever. What i meant to say was i couldnt recognise that pic where u had cut heaps out of the
center to what i looked at under my notch. Definitley could have thought about what i was writing more. I'd still call it butchering but only
because so much has to be cut out of it. Not anyones particular work.
Like i said your making it easier for the rest of us and i totaly apriciate it.
hows that for humble pie

Over here in Perth Luke is fitting a kombi 2ltr box with those gears & a berg center ( converting to a bug nose cone ) he has also a berg trans
mounting kit .
The gear box adapter plate & fly wheel is one of mine with few custom bits thrown in .
you will find a gear box like this will save you a lot of time as it then becomes a direct fit
Steve has many years of building under his belt & knows his shit when it comes to these gear boxes , he has blown them up !
at the end of the day if you can get a G50 for 5K buy it !

Hi Rich
No offence taken mate, just bad choice of words.
The IRS torsion bars almost meet in the middle of the pan, so the swinger ones I'm using are shorter because swingers use a flat style spring plate,
the IRS use a spring plate where the torsion bar protrudes past the spring plate and into the area in front of the rear wheel. So I have moved the
splines for the torsion bars further out in the torsion bar tubes.
A guy named Russ Fellows in the UK has a G50 in bug, he didn't move anything forward to far so his motor would hang back further than mine.

Steve,
Have you seen pics of Russ's bug? He was running a 915 for quite a long time and has only just got a G50, I didn't know he had got anywhere with
fitting it...
As for fitting the G50, I bought one for my project but unfortunately had to sell it in the end and am carrying on with an AT trans. I was using a
type 1 adapter kit with longer studs and it bolted together fine, the flywheel could be modified by having the teeth turned off and a 911 bolt on ring
gear fittting, then use a 928 friction disc as this has the correct splines and 200mm diameter for the flywheel. All that remains after that is using
a saab style hydraulic release bearing.

The short is being shipped today.WIll i turbo it sut sure yet. G50 turns out out to be $5500 + $1000 for linkages with new bushes etc butI keep
tooing and frowing over the gear box choice though. The motor will be easliy capable of 450+hp and the g50 aswell. But is that too much. That means a
quaife lsd too. Hows the poor little notch gonna handle it?
