Dave... are you aware that Gav and the boys have resurected Vintage Gasser for the Nostalgia Drags Series?
Including negative rake rule, open exhaust and mandatory signwriting.

I'd be happy to donate my services for paint/body work if required - I'm not a pro but feel I can do a pretty reasonable job.
Not offended if not keen though, I'm just stoked to see another retro drag bug out of cobwebs!

Great find, great project, and a great read. Are you going bring back the Camel colours?
|
You could do the colours but if you did the name/logo, beside TM issues, the car couldn't be featured in the electronic or print press due to
cigarette advertsing laws (there are only a few big $ exceptions).
|
Yeah thought that too Matt, that's why I said Camel colours. It could always read Gamel. LOL.

Maybe it can be resurected in the same colours but a new name?
Instead of "CAMEL filters" ....... perhaps "CAMEL-toe fiddlers" ?
Or perhaps that is just plain wrong!
I'll keep my suggestions to myself from now on

When Peter finished with the Camel Filter Sponsorship,
the car remained with those colours and palm trees
but reverted to his name on the door.
I think he then ran in a heavier class (CC/G?) but still set records as late as 1982.
Not sure yet what we will dream up for this car.
Unfortunately the promoters of the nostagia series did not allow Peter and Rod
to run their car nostagia Gasser at their event,
even though carbureted cars were some of the first Gassers in Australian drag racing.
Eg Yo-Yo and Ken Virgin.

I had to race Daryl in this car at Operation drag(old surfer's raceway) a few years back in my kombi at one of the Action days they held there. Man
it was so loud that I couldn't even hear or feel my car running!! He was nice enough to give me a head start then came past and picked up the front
wheels in 2nd gear!!! Smart Ass.
If my memory serves me correctly Jamboree 2000 I also ran and he had a run just before me and pulled a nice big burnout then staged and went for a big
RPM launch and broke an axle. My last sighting of the car till these pics.
Not sure what Daryl is doing now as he sold the business to Kurt and Gunther and they are still running it as Volks Mod.
Also they are a sponsor for the upcoming DYNO MANIA!!!
Are you coming???? Let me know or miss out!!

That's because they haven't run the Vintage Gasser class at any event yet. They would have been trying to run in Gas, like CBB and LMS. To get into
that field they would need to be typically sub 10 second runners.
It's confusing with the class designations being so similar.
Once there is enough cars to run the Vintage Gasser class at an event Gavin has assured me that VW (if complying with the class rules, eg negative
rake, signwriting, door trims etc) will be acceptable.

After the Camel Sposorship :
This is a beautiful shot!
And a rarely seen colour shot of the car, pre chop in about 1971,
as was seen when he raced in WA at the old Ravenswood track once :

Dunno if it's any help to you, but Peter's brother Brian (who did the chop and the custom bodywork originally) is still living in Orange. He did a
whole bunch of rust work on my brother's splitty a few years back. Be worth talking to him I reckon. He's really nice guy and I'm sure he'd be
stoked to see the car being restored and raced again.

Isnt it a shame these weren't two sepearte cars..... One form raced for 12 years, and the other for 18 years, but when its restored to its former
glory, one race car will be lost.

I was only wondering what happened to that car the other day.
Good on you for bringing it back to life Dave. I have drooled over it at the old volks mod w/shop in the ninetys but did not realise it had a
history.
Be good to see it again
Good luck.

Hi
I saw this car run at Castlereagh a few times, it was inspiring. If you can't decide on a colour scheme, what about 1/2 & 1/2, one side Volksmod and
the other Camel. It must have given the V8s and 6s the shits at the time. No wonder later on they rewrote the rule book to ban VWs. Cars had to have a
6 or 8 cylinder motor.
