Thanks.

It was an excellent day.

I'd like to thank Peter (Speedster) for helping me solve my linkage and breather hose problems. He also set up a his camera in my car. It should be interesting to see the footage especially since I had a moment on the last turn of the last lap.

Thanks to the Veedub Nut spectators who came out. There must have been 20 plus. It was great to get applause from the crowd of veedub nuts at the final turn on our last lap of the day.

I'd like to thank Richard from V-Force for putting the 1300 gearbox together for me. It really helps the engine stay in a more usable rev range and the car definately feels more responsive. Unfortunately my lap times didn' t reflect this improvement. Richard also deserves thanks for getting the other vws to the event.

More VWs would be good. The Porsche club president said we can have our own catecory if a few more cars turn up. That would be excellent because we wouldn't be slowed down by those pesky porsches.

I'd like to share a couple of observations for the day. My engine now has 044 heads with no port work (only chamber work to unshroud the valves) 40 x 35.5 valves and 1.1:1 rocker arms. The compression is around 10 to 1 (I think). It seems quicker if not equal to my old heads which were street eliminators with 44 x 37.5 valves, 1.25:1 rockers and about 9.5:1 compression. Not only that the 044s run about 5-10 degrees cooler and the engine takes longer to heat up. I can't wait to put the current combo on the SAS dyno to see if there's any horsepower difference. The reason the street eliminators didn't perform to expectation is that the inlet valves were shrouded (they needed chamber work) and the valves were just too big and needed too much valve spring pressure. I've learnt my lesson and I wll not go any bigger that an 40mm valve from now on.

I learnt a few things about tyres too. This was my first time on the Falken ST115s a street/race tyre. In the past I've been used to Yokohama A008Rs which are a race tyre. The Yokohamas just get better as they heat up and after about 2 laps they are amazingly sticky. The falkens on the other hand are good cold, but as they heat up they don't seem to improve much. I felt the car moving around a lot more and I couldn't go as hard is some areas of the track because they made me nervous. And I want to have fun but I don't want to go putting the Oval into the wall.

Jak and I figured out that our cars probably have a similar power to weight ratio now. We didn't do this mathematically we did it on the freeway. We lined up with eachother doing 3000rpm in third and hit the loud pedal. We were pretty much neck and neck until we backed off (at the speed limit of course).

The main varialbe between our cars now is brakes, suspension, ability and balls.

I think Jak wins the later category. Here are two stories I heard:
Coming down the main stright Jak braked for turn 1. He locked the rears and the tail stepped out. Jak jumped on the gas and held the car sideways around the whole corner.
2. The dog leg is one of the scariest sections of track in Australia because it is quite hilly, fast and you can't see the road. Jak came over it sideways and did a little fish tail while correcting the slide.

Excellent stuff. I'll have to put the Yokohamas back on so I can sit behind Jak and watch him. I did that a bit last year and I can tell you that Jak really rides on the limits of adhesion.

Paul, the mystery driver, in the blue L bug will be a force to be reckoned with. He was catching me around the corners at one stage even though he only has a Pobjoy base (kadron fed) motor. I heard from the spectators that he takes faultless lines through the corners. He will be a force because V-Force is building him a moster motor.

The upshot is it's awsome fun, awesome people and we are flying the VW flag loud and proud.

Just to set the record straight, this is the first time that I've been a little quicker than CT, he kicked my arese on every track last year by a second per lap!!!!
When can I pick up my Yokahamas????
regards
Jak

PS how cool was the trip home dude, 3 times we hit the loud pedal side by side & 3 times we stayed side by side!!!!! unreal!

Congratulations to Ben Durie for breaking the hillclimb record at Ringwood in his stroker beetle!

would have liked to have seen that,
yeah certainly Great Day.
With the increasing VW competition , you'll probably draw some away from Hill Climbs. ( which means they'll get more driving in.)
