Here we go.....was in last weeks Sunday Mail in Brisbane

"Users caught in web tangle"

DISAFFECTED Facebook users – angry at difficulties deleting their accounts and personal information – have flooded a protest group designed to help people leave the site.

The group, called "How To Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account", has grown from fewer than 4000 members at the start of last month to more than 14,000.
Those seeking to leave the site are not finding it as easy as joining.

The preferred option offered by Facebook is to "deactivate" an account.

This process does not delete the user's photographs, messages or list of friends.

Instead, Facebook merely stores the information away in case the user decides to rejoin the site, when they will find their profile just as they left it.

Before an account can be deactivated, Facebook wants to know why the user has turned against the site. It demands they agree to one of 10 reasons, which include: "I spend too much time using Facebook", "Facebook is resulting in social drama for me" and "I don't feel safe on the site".

Each selection carries suggestions on how to avoid the problem and stay with the site.

To permanently delete accounts, users previously had to individually delete each photograph, picture, friend and message before contacting Facebook staff to wipe out their profile.

After a storm of protest, Facebook provided a form designed to make it easier to leave.

But users are still reporting difficulties getting out.

Almost all information on the site pushes users towards deactivation.

If users are able to find the link to permanently delete their profile, they are thanked for their request and must then wait days for a response.

Even then some users say their account is still accessible, raising privacy concerns.

"Your profile is not deleted, only partially emptied of information and the possibility to log in removed," complained one user on the protest group, which is within the Facebook site.

"This is not an acceptable situation and can, regrettably, be seen as another attempt by Facebook to deceive its members."

Another member of the 'How To Permanently Delete Your Facebook Account' group offered a novel way to delete an account – violate the terms and conditions.

"It worked for me," he said.
