Sorry 76bug I'll have to take picks on the week end in the day light. I just mounted them to the stock seat bases.

Another box turned up.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/31072008428.jpg

Filled with some goodies....

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/31072008429.jpg

T4 DTM stage 1 kit (Yes the poverty pack).

They wanted to charge me $488 for postage to the air port (that wasnt even to my door), I was like stuff that dont worry about it. They email me back 169.95 because we've rearranged the packaging 6-10 days delivery, I said bring it on. 3 days later it rocked up to my door but I wasnt home to pick it up so I had to get it from the post office.

Hmmm what to get next......

For you 76bug

I removed the vw seat from the base, using a calibrated eye and three pieces of 1/8 plate (the WRX seats weren't the same height on each side) and a MIG welder.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/09082008433.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/09082008434.jpg

I'm differently cutting 10-20mm from the beetle frame so the whole seat sits lower.

T4 78mm crank, max 7000RPM and 104/105mm cylinders what length rod should I run?

5.394 rod ratio 1.76
5.5 rod ratio 1.79
5.6 rod ratio 1.82
5.7 rod ratio 1.86

I'm thinking 5.5 but I push paper for a living. 7 grand is just a magic number I like the sound of.

I'm going to be buying the rods in about 3 weeks when I get back from Fiji (What a waste of money I could have got my heads done).

I recently had a similar disaster with shipping where the shipping company decided "shipped to the airport" meant litterally "landed on the ground". No customs clearance, and a bunch "charges" that should have been called hwy robbery. Again, the supplier covered some of the charges very graciously and we're never using that shipping company again.

BTW, what is the diff between the povo pack and the 'deluxe' pack?

I'd go for the 5.325 or 5.16 rebushed to 22mm.

If the crank is 55mm (type1) rod journal,
it may be worth sticking to the 5.394, so you can get replacements easy in case of a problem,
because that is stock type 1 length.

But talk to Damo, he is the Type 4 guru.
He will be able to tell you if it will even fit in there.
The short rod may cause the piston to plop our the bottom of the barrel at BDC.

To give you an idea where I am coming from,
if I were building a 'race' Type 1 with aftermarket rods and stock 69 stroke,
I would go for a 5.0", and "make" it fit.

The delux is the bees knees, it comes with every thing. New alternator, wide dog house fan (welded), new T4 cooler, Converted 210mm fly wheel pressure plate and clutch.

I think Rod P told me less than 5.4 starts to hang out the hang out the bottom. It has the 2L journals 59.8mm?

Hmm time to call Damo...

Pete West Dads been working hard on his I think his got some pics on the other forum he frequants.

I've recieved a whole heap of the little bits and pieces I needed. Although there are a few other bits still to come I can finally put my wheels on the car. I just need to sort out where and when I can do it, I won't to change the pivot arm bushes at the same time and I have to get the Kerscher 944T ball joints pressed into the 1303 lower control arms.

Look out for an update soon.......

and some not so good news

went to the local performance shop and had the kerscher ball joints pressed into the 1303 lower control arms. Fitted all the struts up. Bueatiful looking good. the steering arms bind on the sway bar at full droop, but nothing resting the car on the wheels wont fix.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/12092008453.jpg

These are puny compared to the stockers. I weighed every thing as a comparison. Old 1303 used strut spindle, disc and caliper 18.5kg. New koni coil over, 944T spindle, brembo 4 spot and vented front disc 19kg. I reackon if the 1303 strut was new it would be heavier, I suspect there is no oil left in it. I'll weigh it on its own on wednesday so I some one has a spare we'll get a true figure.

Put the wheel on and the center cap decided to "jump" off.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/16092008456.jpg

As you can see the center cap hole is touching the grease cap rim (and thats with out the grease cap). I was like that sucks and then I saw it still had 1mm to go before the rear of the wheel was seated on the disc.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/16092008457.jpg

I've now had to purchase 66mm wheel studs (the hubs came with 45mm) which I'll machine down 6mm, cost me $127 for 10. And I had a mate machined up 15mm spacers for a can of coke, priceless, I'll have pics tomorrow.

Mean while back on ebay.........

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/19092008460.jpg

45mm Dellorto DRLA's on T1 manifolds with hex bar and 3 1/2 inch tall filters, aluminum tops and 38mm venturis should do the trick.

Sorry about the photos, my mobil has dirt behind the lens now and its affecting the quality of the shots.

Rob, if ur getting any wheel to bearing cap interference u can do a small amount of panel beating to the caps
ive had to do this on mine
theres a fair bit of room under there b4 its even close to the bearing clamp nut
strange tho normally porsche rims have just enough clearance to clear vw dust caps and axle nuts

tierod hang up is the only problem with the 2 bolt front ends
just depends on how low u wanna run it

Hey Joel

I appreciate that might be the case with some porsche wheel/hubs but not in this instance. With both the bearing cap and centre cap off the wheel still couldnt go on. If you look in the second photo in the previous post you'll see a hole, thats for the allen key to get to the axle nut, you can see that the hub is seated flush against the wheel centre. I still had 1mm until the wheel was seated against the hub, I could only bring the wheel out further.

But never fear its now fixed!

You can see in this picture the hang up and the 944T spindle/tierod mounted from the bottom (no need for the bump steer kit)

The new look on the front

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/24092008469.jpg

I need to make the steering rods(? from the idler arm to the spindle) about 50mm longer due to the difference in the ackerman angle between the 994T and 1303 spindles. The brakes are bleed but not yet tested (because of the steering rods held in by 1cm in either end).

Coming soon in part 2: The Rear

As soon as the front and rear are sorted its back to the engine. I'll chuck these 45's on when I get a pump and regulator. It's all time and money and for the first time in my life I think I've found a nice balance (9 day fortnight's really help, thank goodness for the Public Service).

Custom Vee Dub make custom length tie rods to any length you want if you get stuck. They use some fancy ass tube and cut and tap it to suit whatever tie rod end you want, usually stock VW in your case.

Finally got off my bum and did something. Got some tierods from veedubenginering cost me $183.12aud to my door, I ordered heavy duty and got super duty. If I ever brake them I probably wont be walking away from the car. You'll have to wait for a picture of them because they're on my other camera and the battery is flat.

The rear went on real easy, replaced the pivot arm bushes for poly urethane, replaced the inner swing plate bushes with poly urethane, fitted T3 torsion bars. Bolted up the Porsche gear, easy as, straight up swap. Replaced the bearing seals (same seal as the beetle ones). Only mod was longer brake lines which cost me twenty bucks. Oh and I had to shorten the porsche hand brake tubes, but maybe I stuffed up...... Damo??

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/21112008491.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/22112008492.jpg

The new look. That black spot on the front is were I didn't wash egg off that was thrown at my car, oh and the egg ate the paint.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/22112008493.jpg

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/22112008494.jpg

The car looks and drives awesome now, wheels fill out the guards nicely. Handling from all the suspension and wheels is so good the red light comes on way to often (the oil light) and the brakes....... pulls up so fast I wish I had the power to test it.

Coming soon.......

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r232/blingblingbob/23112008495.jpg

Just waiting on some speed flow fittings and an update kit for the 45mm DRLA's

One major down side though is the car is crabbing very badly has done since before I fitted the porsche stuff. The adjustment at the back is at the max, time for a professional to have a look. I suspect the car is twisted but who knows......

Nice bit of work going on with your bug. I had the Torsion tube rubbers replaced with neoprene? ones a few months ago.Pretty sad state of affairs really as they squeak & groan like hell. going back to rubber i think. Had new shocks put on rear too.Another sad state of affairs. Still got bad bumping sound. And wheel aligning has reverted to where it was before - nowhere!!.Front wheels scrubbing out on inner guards. One inch play in the steering wheel now.Not happy jack.
