Matt and I seem to be level pegging. He's a bit further on the body work but my engine is ready to go.
Now the sun is out finally a chance to make some progress. Should be ready for primer Friday or Saturday.

Well Kung Foo Panda is done and dusted and tomorrow is the last day I am prepared to sand. My thumb and index finger on my right hand a bleeding from
sanding.
I blame Al (dasdubber) because he makes things look so easy.....

Amazing how much time this takes hey mate! Your arm gets "work hardened" eventually so it gets easier......however this means as soon as you finish
this one you have to start another project to maintain the muscular conditioning you have developed in recent weeks!

I just finished the first coat of primer and I'm not entirely happy with the result. I was using a high build etch primer with (I think) too small a
nozzle which lead to a mixed result. Tried a mixture of paint to thinner ratios and air pressure but ultimately had to thin it too much to get it to
cover. As a result no pic until the second coat which hopefully will go on better with a different spray gun.
I also gotta keep reminding myself what it's going to be used for so there is no need to get too anal about the result.
That means only one thing....more sanding. Although I have been banned from the shed until 10.00am tomorrow.

Hey Andrew, I use a 2mm tip on my primer gun when spraying high build. You can get away with a 1.8 but if you are using a 1.4 it can be very slow
going. Over reducing can cause it to lose some of its high build qualities. You can speed up the sanding process if you have a palm sander (shorter
throw than normal dual action) - spray a light guide coat then hit it with say 400 on the d/a palm sander but not taking it all off.....depending on
which colour you are painting (and what paint) you can then shoot another quick guide coat and hand sand with 600 or 800 (wet) before paint. If you
sand the high build by hand from the start and you have a lot of orange peel or dry spray (possible with small tip) it will take a long time. Everyone
does it different so if Helbus, matberry, rexy, DubCrazy or the other guys who have experience in this area reading this has alternative advice/ideas
that would be great. The above is just what works for me.

Thanks Al.
The gun I was using was a 1.4. It's fine for normal primer and finish coat but struggles with the high build. It was very slow going. I have another
gun now so will sand and try again. I did end up with some dry spray in those hard to get areas which really pissed me off as this will take time to
fix. The other thing which freaked me out was the primer was a mustard yellow colour when I was expecting a traditional grey. With it over reduced to
apply it took a lot to get it to cover.
Thanks again

It's amazing what a different spray gun is like. The new gun I used also had a 1.4 tip but it was 100% better than my other one. Don't know if the
gravity feed made a difference but it was great.
Still not 100% happy with the undercoating. I think the damage was done with the first coat but I can't be bothered spending countless hours fixing
it. The sanding and application of the second coat has fixed a lot of the imperfections.
The yellow is a shit colour to spray because in the light I had it was almost impossible to see the spray as it went on which made it difficult to get
a good overlap.

Isnt that yellow stuff 'primer putty filler'? I dont know if it can go straight on bare metal. I used it on my first beetle, the results were
great, I used big bits of cut up boogy board to sand it back, it left nice curves.

Was going to wait untilit was finished to put more pics up but Dave has coaxed me to add some.
Put the engine in on Saturday mainly so I could see if the spring plates needed resetting and to see hoe the rear wheels sat. Seems to be ok at the
moment but the front needs to come down some.
Wiring is underway and hopefully I can start putting the lexan windows in next weekend. Also need to fit the traction bar from the white beetle so
some new brackets will need fabbing. I also need to pinstripe around silver flash. Still in two minds exactly what I will use yet.
Other than that it's getting there, although I did discover the rear apron won't fit without some serious cutting. Might run without it yet.

Hey Stanley love your work, you cant beat a turbo'd early drag car.
Can you tell me what size & offset the rear wheels are, the fitment looks just perfect with the fender width etc. If it comes down a bit the tops
would tuck nicely into the fenders wouldn't they?
I'm hoping for a similar setup on my 59 when I get to that bit.
