I have a few more questions now that iv looked at my engine more
1. What are the pipes circled in yellow, they run from the intake (i think) to the exhaust maifolds.
When i got a new exhaust, i couldnt connect them at first as i lost the gaskets and it was backfiring like a....out of these, what do they do?
2. I have three holes in my tinware, i have seen in some pictures another hose coming form the stock air filter? How does this work?
3. Whats the deal with the stock oil filler?
Someone told me the pipe going down is an overflow and i know the small bit on top should run to the air filter

the tubes running from your exhaust along you intake manifold are heat risers, they help to stop the manifold icing up by circulating the warm exhaust air.

the oil filler has the two breather tubes, one goes down and exits under the tinware, (this should have a rubber valve on the end, if it doesnt, buy one) the other should be connected to the air cleaner to scavenge case pressure into the intake. the two big holes are where your heater pipes would connect thru the tinware, if u dont have heaters then they are surplus and should be blocked off somehow.

The third hole has this piece underneath the tin to collect air off the exhaust. It then travels up a cardboard tube to the inlet of the stock air cleaner to warm the air going into the carby for cold conditions. The air cleaner has a summer/winter flap that can close off the flow of heated air.

You can get away without it (unless you live in snow country lol) but the hole in the tinware needs to be covered up as it will let heat into the engine bay that shouldn't be there.

Regards,

Matt.

The best filter u can run on a stock engine is a stock oil bath

those cruddy pancake filters like your engine has still have a PCV hose spigot

unless its been broken off, its probably at the back where you cant see it but its what the breather hose on the oil filler connects to

the later air cleaners were thermostatically controlled
they sucked up warm air through a hose connected to the stove pipe above that matt posted
once it got hot enough the flap shut and it sucked cool air from above the engine instead

damn this pic is going waaaaay back
but u can see the hot air hose ducted to the air cleaner

I did away with the hoses from the fan shroud also, and have a metal air filter also. You can buy a front piece of tinware without the holes. I got mine from micks for $40 or something, but it doesnt fit because of my accident. got one of those, it will help (so im told by lots of pros). also, get some good breather hose fron the oil filler breather going to the air cleaner, that will help too (and make your engine bay less oily and greasey)

colonel i hope for your engines sake when you did away with the heater hoses that you also did away with the heaterboxes for J pipes

your heads wont last real many brisbane summers with no air flow thro the heatboxes

yeah, its a full merged empi piece of crud currently. the holes arent covered, so i also have three holes in the engine compartment... which aint cool. But the rear beaver is pushed in enough that I cant put in the new tin ware. fun. Hopefully have it fixed by the end of the year. putting on the thunderbird system, because I have terrible lack of responce because the current exhaust is way toooo big. Im totally sick of it at the moment, just want to shove the exhaust on and get some kadrons on there. darn 34pict3 ticks me off. I really want to get a 1915 with dells happening but I dont have that sort of cash growing on my money tree sadly.

Dude, cover the holes. Silicon a spaghetti tin lid over them or something as a temporary fix. It might not look pretty, but neither does a hot engine sucking air up form the exhaust.
