Its a lot of work but its worth it.
Not a job for the back yarder.
I`m doing it all myself but I work in the metal world so its not such a job with access to all the tools.
Only taking out enough to help the 135`s clear the guards when lowered and to clear for the off set from the disc brakes.
I post all this soon with pictures:thumb

The body is all stock but its often the lower windscreen that gives it the affect of being chopped.
Kim you can drill the torsion bars with a normal high speed drill bit you just run it slower and use lots of cutting oil.
Check out this site , it might give you some ideas.

Fitted new head light body seals and tailight to body seals tonight.
Also going to replace the windscreen and rear window rubbers as the are old and hard.
The idea of replacing the windscreen is floating around as well because it still has the original and its the old safty glass.
Has any one in melbourne had a oval laminated screen made and how much are they worth?
Will try to get some more pictures up this week end.:thumb

Had one cut at alocal glass place in Moorabbin about 5 years ago. Cost me $150. Think I got a bit stitched up.
Make sure you use the old one as a template.
If they get the curve at the bottom wrong it will never fit. No matter how much you push.

Well hit my real first problem.
The BRM`s fit great but the stub axle on the front is to long on an oavl and it sticks out past the centre of the rim.
Thus every time I put the wheel on the centre cap pops out.
Wheel goes on.
Cap pops off.
Wheel goes on.
Cap pops off.
Wheel goes on.
Cap pops off.
The stub axle on a 60`s beetle is shorter but as I`m fitting different front spindles and rotors later (disc brakes) I`m hoping this will not be a
problem.
I`m still looking for a drivers side mat if anyone spots one in there travels. :thumb

Bug Boy....Real nice ride...Keep it up!
As for discs....I have a 63 bug with a LP frontend. I made up a bolt on disc kit to fit TIII calipers & discs to mine and it works a treat! The
one problem with it is it widens the track a little (10-20mm?). As I'm running 6" FUCH's (195x50-15) on the front, clearance is an
issue. But with narrow beam (as you have) you'd be laughing.
The moral of this story is....
Go for later LP stub axles & disc's and she'll be right maaaaaaate.

well both pop-outs are now in and I have found some front carpet.Still looking for a drivers side mat.
I`m now waiting on my disc brakes from the states and as they come with drop spindles I hope this will help with the problem of the centre caps and
the stub axle.
Will try to get some more pictures up soon.

Well I wrote programs and cut this at work but now as the 56 oval is put away and I`m working on the 57 I`ll have to start again
I still have to make the stand that mounts it to the rear bumper , and paint in around the letters with black.
So I will end up with one on each car.:thumb

Here`s the start of the front end.
Its all been cleaned and cut down the middle.
This front end I only took out enough for the adjusters and to make up for the disc brake kit.
This front end mod will narrow the front beam with out cutting the body work.

Well as the towers will now hit the body work they have been cut down to half the size.
This will now clear the body work.
Next is to reinforce the tower and remake the shocker mount.
As this car is running smaller tyres up front it won`t have to be a super narrow beam.
But theres one in the pipe line.

thanks for the pics of the beam nath.
how much did you cut out of it so far?
is this the one thats gonna have the brms?
does the offset of the brms create the need to narrow further?

Kim, on the beam pictured I have only cut enough to make up for the wide 5 disc brakes as this will kick the wheels out 20mm each side, and the 50mm
for the select a drops.
So in all the beam with wheels back on will look standard.
But the wheels will not stick out from fitting the disc brake kit.
On my other oval the 56 I am going all out on that beam and may even cut the body a bit.
But one project at a time I think. :thumb

Well just scored a switch off a good German contact so its full steam ahead for the steering lock now.
Started on the rear speaker shelf and looking at making a fibre glass glove box thats a bit deeper for the head unit to fit into.

Well as you can see its not the correct one as its from a 60`s model. The oval beetle one has screw terminals.

Well after trying to find some old vynil I went to spot light and brought some.
Only thing is it looks to new but that can be over come.
I cut two 10mm sheets of mdf.
One is to the correct size and the other 20mm smaller all round and glued together. This makes it fit nice and snug into the rear of the car.
Covered it in 12mm foam and then vynil.
The speakers are mounted next.
They will be fitted up from the bottom and the old grills will be mounted on the top for the 50`s look.
Still have to fit the head unit before we have some tunes.:thumb
