I didn't realise you were asking about an off-roader. You will need to look at extending float bowl vents to prevent them spilling fuel into the
throats of the carbys in rough conditions

just gotta know where to look
i picked up a set in perfect nick for $250 of ebay a few weeks back that only missing the T peice which i got for $5 from enzed
then about 2 weeks later another set sold for $270 in the same condition
theres a bit more work involved than just chucking a turbo on but yeah leave that one for further down the track
single carbs work well if u have good manifold heat but twins will give u better results but steer clear of the weber progressives if u can they work
well but take a hell of alot of tweaking to get right

so the progressives arnt as good as the non-progressives? i just read somewhere that progressives get better fuel economy and more drivability by only
sacrificing a litlle bit of perfromance... what are idf's???? i also read that twins are no good for offroad but they didnt give reasons why. and
this is why i went off em.. is this right???

Have a look round the web. Do some research on Weber IDF and IDA carbs. The IDAs are essentially a racing carb, but even still. And lots of offroad
cars use twins, filters can be pesky but it's nowhere near impossible. Also, it is possible to run a single IDF center mounted. This is a common baja
bug setup in the states.

I went single DRLA 45 on a 2074cc in about '86.....never again; duals, and make a remote air filter arrangement in clean air or single TB EFI, and
also remote mount filter.

Pete, i think they were one-offs
the usual going rate for a set of K-dogs is around the $400 mark
burley the progressives work and plenty of ppl use them they can just be a right royal prick to setup and jet
and dont give the benefit as good as a single IDF or DCNF does
oh yeah keep clear of old holleys tho if u come across one they were shockers and a few have been popping up on ebay lately
2 settings - rough idle with ice or flat bickey
i didnt even bother selling one i had it went straight in the bin altho i wish now i kept the manifold

Hey BugSprays are not bad, I could never understand all the hate for them I have had little to no touble with mine all these people poo pooing them
and yet I made 50rwhp on a 1641 with extractors and cleaned up heads......
Compaired to the twin 40 dells I now have it was a shit load easier to get working correctly and don't talk to me about rough idel with duals lol
It is however important that they are set up correctly as decribed in the old how to hod rod your VW engine book, useing a plenum manifold is a big no
no they need little to no plenum it is even stated that you should block the equaliser gap on the end castings which I did, they run better with a vac
advance dizzy but a 009 will work ok too
When I first got the carb it had a plenum manifold and it run like a dog I was told by a supposed expert that "Its just the way these farking carbs
are there shit throw it in the bin and get a webber."
After doing as the book said I coudlen't be more happy with how it runs now. |

'Non Plenum' really only refers to centre-mount carbies... 'twin' means duals; one per side of the engine
Not sure how much money you have to play with but get a set of Kadrons, fit float bowl breathers and and see how you go... Cheaper and easier than
dual Webers
