painted in platinum grey

Painted the 58 in the garage on the weekend, and i'm very happy with the result. So much so that i'm not going to recycle the old nuts and bolts! a call to Vintage will fix that issue. The next step is to put in a new beam and reassemble the jigsaw asap, without a careless srcewdriver causing any damage!

Excuse the rubbish quality of the photos but you get the idea. I'll take some in the daylight on the weekend.

front done

well after many late nights the front end is together, with new beam, steering arms and tierods. just need to sort out the wheel alignment and bonnet geometry, it doesn't quite lock.

but here's the pictures we all want to see.

just wondering, how much paint did you end up using and what was the cost? i had thought of painting mine in the same colour but the cost of 4 litres of the platinum grey was close to $700

platinum grey paint cost

I used Debeers paints/Octoral ( from Holland ) from the local ford dealer.

Octoral primer 3ltr $70.
Code D7X / 2R2R, 4ltr base colour $258
hardener 1ltr $29.
Octoral clear coat 5ltr $90
Octoral clear hardener 2.5ltr $48

All up including sandpaper and plastic etc cost around $650

Still got about 1 ltr of base coat left and 2ltr of clear. Hindsight would tell me to use another litre of primer and not have large sections of old red oxide primer, because it had a bad reaction in places, which had to be resanded. Overall it is a really good garage job, which is what i wanted for a daily, but it wont win any prizes at a show!.
It was a great learning experience for next time.....oval!

yeah paint prices can be extreme. glasurit quoted me $2000 for primer, base and clear! which is fine if you have a show car. i guess debeers isn't considered a high quality paint, but it was easy to apply and nice and shiny.

finally on the road

Betty the beetle, as she has become known, got her number plates today.
I have to relearn how to drive a manual again, and how to drive a beetle aswell !

Im guessing it's normal to have such along time between changing gears, it's been awhile since I have driven one.

otherwise it is a pleasure to drive, for a car that hasn't been driven for 15 years.....

Ill post some better pics later on

I recently moved house to Nowra, so it was a perfect chance to take Betty for a roadtrip. I only planned to nurse her along at 80kmph since she hasn't been driven for years. But she wanted to sit happilly on 100! Until a slight upwards gradient that is, 90-80-70-60, then back down the hill, 70-80-90-100. Beetles' are fun aren't they!

Love the colour dude. Nice home job. When I get round to doing mine I'll have to remember to ask you what equipment you used to do the job :)

As for the paint cost, well I've recently heard of Debeers and seems like good quality. Dupont and Glasurit are good products too but rather up there own arses. Because they are so well known and respected they think they can charge more. Bit like Yves Saint Lauren really, I mean it's just a bloody suit that some poor pakistani has sewed together for 20cents.
Still I hope the Deneers turns out to be hard wearing ;)

NEW ENGINE

Back in the game again, picked up a 1600 twinport the other day.
engine no. AD013126
Whilst I'm doing the 12v conversion aswell I thought of modernising the engine with an alternator and electronic ignition.
Any advice and other suggestions are most welcome!

twin solex

Did a quick test fit of the twin solex 32-34 PDSIT-2/3 today. I bought them off ebay awhile back for $70 alot cheaper than webbers! Found the manifolds don't line up with the locating pin on the heads, so looks like it's out with the power drill:lol: The linkage looks like it should work (although it's somewhat 'lightweight!') Has anyone had any experience with this set up? all I could really find out is that the -2 goes on the left -3 the right:?:

yeah she blows smoke and takes a while to start, even with a new 6v battery. behind the rocker covers is pretty shiny so i was hopeing the internals were the same.
the respray is too good for a rat but not that good either. a friend of mine is an ex raaf painter and he is going to paint it for cartons. i'll leave the wolfsburg crest on the bonnet though.
