Ahh Nice, I learnt to drive in my dads 1971 Triumph TR6 convertible. It was the only manual we had.
I have big muscles in my left leg thanks to that car!

Hmm that reminds me, gotta go fit some new mechanical fuel injectors to it next week.

Absolutely. Mine was the povvo pack, with 1850, twin strombergs, hot dog, wood interior and sunroof, plus I added TR7 alloys. The Dolomite Sprint's that were raced where the 1850, but with the 16 valve head.

Wish I'd met that cop, the one that got me wasn't cool about me being a learner, maybe the fact that I had only one L plate on, was speeding and no licenced driver with me (my mate wasn't going to admit to having a P licence) had something to do with his bad attitude.:grind:

The old mans FC holden with twin strombergs and Lukey exhaust and then bought my 1955 beetle. The FC was a good back up for when we wanted to tow something or the beetle was under repair.

yeah, like Joel, i don't remember "learning" to drive.............must have been in the blood

i do think ride-on mowers are great thing to begin on for feel, opposite locks, rear wheel lock turns, closed space manouvering etc........pretty much everything

but there were lots of vehicles around the whole time I was growing up, from full blown off road buggies, bajas, country buggies, home built VW based paddock bash buggies, "bushwacker" mini bikes, go-karts..........right through to kenworth aero-dyne (400HP 18 sp road ranger),MACK trucks, bulldozers, excavators, lots of different buses and coaches.........alll well before i was thinking of getting a licence.

the day i turned 16 at 9.30 am i was booked for my L's........ mummies turbo TX5 telstar copped a beating then for a while (i'm probably lucky to have survived that period).........till i bought my first regoed beetle..........that i still own today

Well.......when I was 5 I used to steer (drive?) the Landy on Fraser Island ocean beach, I did get some sort of lesson in my first 'around the friends farm rally track' in our bush basher (later MY bush basher), wait for it, a 54 beetle with all the roof cut off,not even a screen, welded doors, roll over bar, baja buggy. Of and no brakes. I would have been about 12.

I, like Daimo, was waiting at the cop shop at opening time for my learners, and 6 weeks to the day passed my first and only driving test.

My dad had a funny driving test, living out west, he fronted to the cop shop for the driving test and the policeman started writing out the licence. When questioned about the test, the copper said, no need, I've seen ya driving for years !!!

I feel sorry for kids today without any experience getting on the road with a modern car that potentially goes fast enough to kill them and all thier mates.
