great find. well done.
just goes to prove they are still out there.
have a look around there for the back bumper off the Barny. it's bound to be there somewhere.
as they both have ribbed bumpers, they are both '50's.
the tail lights on the "brown" bus are later added trailer lights. the centre rear brake light puts it 55 to 57
the "green" one is obviously a Barny, given away by the no roof overhang over the windscreens, the dash pod, the 3 spoke steering wheel, the 16"
rims, etc.
congrats to you.
Most people seem normal, till you get to know them.

Fantastic brother.
Thankfully builders hoard everything.
That later bus looks like the weight of the timber over the years has lowered her permanently.
Definetly barndoor there.

What are your plans for them?
Are you going to keep one or restore them both?
What is the floor like in them?
They both look pretty good considering the condition they have been kept in.

Well done.
I just have to keep telling myself that happiness is being satisfied with what you have, not getting what you want........
I really wish I'd kept a few of the splits I had back in the late '80s and early '90's. Only have a few photos and the memories now. |

Greetings,
I have finally got around to joining up, my little bro posted the pics.
To answer some questions: A mate stumbled across them in a backyard in Bardon, called me immediately.
I went round that arvo, checked them out, and made the guy an offer, on the proviso that we would take all of the firewood stored inside both vans,
and dig them out, for.......$500!!!
For both!!!
And even then I think I could have had them for $200, he seemed surprised when I mentioned the number.
Needless to say I called in sick for work for the next 3 days. Every arvo when the guy got home from work, I was sure he would have made at least 1
simple Internet search to find their real value and demand more money, but it never happened.
It took 2 days to remove the firewood from both, we jacked them up off the stumps that they were stored on, inflated the tyres, 7 of the 8 held
40psi!
The rhf tyre on the Barndoor blew out approx 10 secs after inflation, just as I went to walk away from it, sounded like a bomb went off !!!
We knocked a retaining wall down and used a 4wd recovery hand winch to skull drag them up and out, with 1 wheel on each van locked on.
The barndoor is an Nov 54 build, no motor or seats, lots of rust in both doglegs, inner sills all the usual spots.
The Chestnut Brown one is Oct 57, complete minus the rear seat, with the semaphores bogged into the B pillars, an d some poxy 70's Hella trailer
lights in the rear, and indicators screwed into the front. Both of which have been removed.
I have spent approx 3 full days labour on it so far, and have managed to fit a new 6 volt battery to it, and 1 hour later, jerry rig some fuel into
the carby, reset the points, crank the engine into life after 32 years sitting idle!! I got sprayed with a rusty shower from the pee shooter exhaust
tip, but not a hint of smoke.
I took off the tappet covers to reset the valve clearances, to find what looked like a top end rebuild. The oil looked like it hadn't even been used,
and the heads are immaculate.
It did have a death rattle, sounded like a gudgeon pin on No1, but it turned out to be the Exhaust pushrod not located correctly. Refitted and reset
the clearances, and ran it again, reset the idle by ear. It now purrs like the day it left the factory. Unbelieveable.
Stuck a new gear linkage in it so it had a gearshifter that worked, adjusted the rear brakes so the handbrake worked, and took it for a drive around
the paddock, the box sounds like it all works properly too.
Can somebody tell me when the next VW get together is on and when?
And is anyone interested in the 54? It's too much project for us at the moment, love to see it go to a good home.

I think its good that he is honest about how much he paid for them, most people would not be.
And i'm sure we all would want as much as we could get for one if we were selling.
