Don't forget that Volkswagens were fully manufactured in Australia from 1959 to 1967, so there are lots of Aussie-only VW parts and accessories that you won't see in the USA.

These flashes were a VW dealer-fitted accessory, available from the late '50s to the early '60s. This is a Lanock Motors accessory brochure from about 1960, and as you can see you had a choice of designs, under part norder numbers VL328, VL330 or VL 330A.

The VW dealer would mask the car according to the pattern, paint the flash, drill the holes and fit the mouldings.
