Well it was Andrew Westwood (oztowdster) who finally got them right but even then he reccomended we get it on the dyno. I don't remember what jets are in them now sorry. there is a book with general jet sizes that will get it close. maybe google it??

Baja Burley.
Backfiring though the exhaust is usually a sign of post detonation as a result of sucking air into the barrel with the exhaust valve open and having unburnt fuel in the chamber.
Yes it will back fire with less backpressure as is achieved by having the muffler off ( as you foundout!) or from another leak somewhere in the exhaust system (cheakjoins at heater boxes or J tubes etc)
Other than that Back to timing again and jets on the carb.
Is it backfiring when you press the accellerator (lean back fire up through teh inlet manifold ) or on backing off ( rich backfire). Note if youhave an exhaust leak, with the engine running from cold block teh muffler with your hand and see if you can hear hissing somewhere else. The engine should stall if it aint breathing out. If it doesn't odds are you have a leak somewhere.

The carbies he has are my old ones and they are jetted to suit 1916 and they have an airleak on the butterfly shaft on 1 side, Once repaird and jetted they should be fine.

Well im absolutely sure im getting TOO much fuel so it sounds like a rich backfire.

also not sure if its a problem but it doesnt seem to come back down to idle very quickly??

and when its sitting at idle it will randomly rev up a few rpm (dont have a tacho but its very noticeable, maybe 1000?)

The high reving is caused by the airleak. Spray a bit of wd40 on the left hand carbie linkage and the idle will come down. Also i used to have a spring from the centre linkage on the hex bar to my engine cage to get better return on the gas. :tu:
