OK so its the root of all evil and causes people to wear their hats backwards. What should we do about it? Maybe we should have spelling moderators whose job it is to edit every post that contains the wrong to/too/two. Or maybe we should get 3 strikes. If you make 3 spelling or grammar errors in one month your account gets locked for the rest of that month. Public stoning would be a good deterrant but not socially acceptable by the wowsers. It probably has to be a sliding scale. New forum members have to spell 100%. Because Birchall has been around the VW scene for a long time, and a forum member since the beginning he should probably get 5 strikes. Do migrants get any free hits? What about people who werent given the same chances at education? I have a mate that is great with maths and can fold a peice of sheetmetal into any shape you could imagine. Nothing wrong with his intelligence, but he has a lot of trouble reading and writing. Thats not our fault though and we shouldnt have to put up with his bad spelling. People like that should have permanent bans. How are we going to distinguish between a spelling mistake and a typo. How does an american forum member have to spell colour? The way he was taught at school or does he have to spell it our way? And what about words that are spelt correctly and and used in correct context but they arent the accepted aussie way. What if I asked for a supplier of carbon fibre fenders? What if i use a brand name to describe an item eg stanley knife, teflon tape?

if you get worked up about spelling and grammar then you are in for one hell of an unhappy life.

Hiya ama,

As a teacher who worked with kids and their grammar, spelling, syntax and general English I might be suspected of having a particular point of view on this subject. And while I do have the suspected point of view, I'm not so radically entrenched as to run afoul of most of the situations you outlined in your post.

However, do consider this idea. Like it or not, when one posts a thread or submits a reply the writer is in the business of communication. Anything that gets in the way of that communication will tend to distort or make ambiguous the writer's original concern. Have you ever read a post which you had trouble deciphering? Or perhaps encountered a post which could be read more than one way? My opinion is simply that writers who let spelling or syntax get in the way of their concern are shooting themselves in their proverbial foot.

And really, with aids and tools such as spellcheckers many of us could do a better job of communicating our ideas with little extra trouble. However, as I alluded before, if what is written (even if it contains errors of various types) is generally understood by the reading audience, then there is no reason to get all distressed.

I checked back over the posts and as I see it there is noone (sorry if that's not the correct way of spelling it ) "worked up" over the matter, just people making a comment.

I am staggered to see such a response to what, I thought, was a bit of a throw-away question - maybe I should have thrown it away. Obviously spelling ( along with grammar, etc,) is important, but we shouldn't let ourselves get too troubled about it. If you do you best, at whatever you do, no-one should ask for more than that!

Bloody Hell, I hope I don't make any mistookes from now on!

Cheers, Greg

I agree that lazy post writing can make it difficult and annoying to read.

I always use a spell check and proof read my posts at least once.

Also, just because everyone does it, does not make it acceptable. Any wonder the English language is the hardest to learn with all of the exceptions to rules.

Anyone have any good rules? I have a good one.

Spelling of licence often tricks many people. Here is an easy way to remember.

Use the words 'advise' and 'advice' to guide you.
Advise is the verb, the thing you do. Just as license is the verb when you license someone to use your artwork.

Advice is the noun, the thing itself. Just as you have a driver's licence.

So an example in use might be;
"I licensed Steve to drive by presenting him with his driver's licence."

Too true, those wowsers are a worry.

Perhaps we need a "Correct spelling and apostophe use" Forum
It would be easy to moderate as it wouldn't get many members IMO..

There's a handyman guy with a professionally sign written ute running around my part of the world with "no job to small". I think he means he'll do anything from "drink your beer" to "change a tap washer".

Hi Joel, amazeer and others..

it's hard if You were good in English.. or enjoyed it... lol

"lose or loose any marks..."

"they're or their or there.. "

to or too or two...

another VERY common one... is breaks for brakes..

these are very obvious to people who know... [yes not no]

but very difficult [probably] for others...

My pet hate is the spelling or I should say NON SPELLING used on mobile phones...

all In My Humble Opinion... IMHO..

LEE

PS: Joel.. I just replaced My 12 month old dell keyboard as some of the letters had all worn off... lol

Further proof that society continues on it's downward spiral. Everything is handed to everyone on a silver platter via spellcheck and soforth, but laziness is still encouraged. If our educating bodies don't care, why should students?
I am no English language policeman, but do take pride in what I put my name to (even as an alias on a forum).
It is the lack of pride and carelessness that I think is the real shame.

P.S. My pet hate is "I seen a wicked slammed Beetle the other day". It is "SAW" my friends and I'm not talking 'B' grade horror flick either!

English and grammar are one of my pet hates. I hated it at school and failed it for the HSC, but in my opinion I can speak English just fine and write pretty well as well. I am now the chief editor of a web site that serves over a million visitors per month, how ironic is that!

So my 2c worth is that English departments need to teach English that is more relevant. Shakespeare may be intersting, but it should be optional. teach the kids real life English. In fact spellling should be high on their agenda.

And I too hate some of this abbreviated mobile phone writing. Mainly when it takes me longer to decipher it than it does to read it.
