Hi CT,
Have you thought about a slightly stiffer rear anti-roll bar? The 1st picture in this post is a classic "too little roll stiffness in the rear" pose, and beefing up the anti-roll bar would be different from increasing the overall spring rate.

Suspension stuff

I was trying to increase the understeer. I actually ran the car with no rear rollbar at Eastern Creek and it handled well but took too long to bring the nose to the apex. Then when I took it to Oran Park it understeered exiting the bridge. So the small rear swaybar is just enough to make it neutral. I've got a bigger adjustable rear bar at home. However, I'm still using an open diff and I used to find the stiffer rear bar made the inside rear spin too much in the final turns at Eastern Creek and Oran Park.

Until I win the lotto, which I don't play, I'm not willing to modify the car to the next stage, which would be limited slip diff, rear disk brakes, bigger heads etc. It would be a small increase in bang for a big increase in bucks.

Maybe I could increase the size of the front swaybar by 2mm for a little more understeer, then balance that up by putting the bigger rear springs back in for more oversteer thus keeping it neutral and making it sit flatter.

I'll check the pyros on the weekend and see if the car is using the outside of it's tyres. Normally the fronts are even across the tread and the rears show a bit too much negative camber, but I'd have to raise the ride height to even that out. The current setup makes the front tyres work hard, which is awsome, since it only puts 39% of its weight on the front wheels.

In order to crack the 2 minute mark at the creek I've removed the passenger seat for the first time ever and taken the overiders off. I might even go easy on the post-scrutineering pastizzis Jak will bring along.

I might try the V8 supercar line through turn 2. I might try taking turns 4 and 5 in 4th gear. I might even have the stones to not backoff into turn 1.

Maybe I should just get Paul to drive.

What day are you running CT ?

I have a GOPRO camera you could put on the outside of the car looking at what the wheels are doing if you like ??

you can also adjust the neg without adjusting the ride height...........its an easy trick.

Up the creek on Saturday.

The Morgan Club is hosting a round of the Combined Sports Car Association supersprint series this coming Saturday 21st August at Eastern Creek.

I'm going to bring a jar of termites to sabotage the Morgan competitor's partially wooden cars.

Hi Dave,

My oval feels nervous at 150 - 160 kmph which is about it's top speed at eastern creek. Or maybe it's just me.

I back off at about the 50m mark into turn one and let the aerodynamics, or lack of, slow me down. Then I get back on the gas when I turn in and hold it flat until a breath after the 100m mark into turn 2. I think.

I haven't run there properly since the Dutton Rally in 2007 when I think I did a 2:00.3.

I find turn 1 and turn 4 the most hair raising.

I figured out at some point that the average speed to do a 2 minute lap is about 120 kmph.

2 minutes seems slow.

The Cyber Evo from Japan which we brought out for World Time Attack (Why I wasn't at the VW Nationals) did a 1:30 beating the V8 Supercar record on R-spec tyres (Plug - Yokohama ADVAN of course).

Click here to see a 1:30 lap in the Cyber Evo

This thing is light and wind tunnel tested.

Hi Ian,

Jak and I will be there eating Pastizzis from 7:15 but racing won't start until about 9.

Then we'll spend most of the day standing around (hopefully) not under my car fixing problems.

There's supposed to be a big classic car show on the same weekend. They're highlighting the fact there will be an old double decker bus there, so it's obviously going to be chock-a-block full of errrr.....well..... interesting people. :dork:

Man I'm having fun with those smiley icons today. There's one for everything.

Timed laps start at 9:30.

The entry to the pits will probably be the only gate open. If there isn't too many people you can probably park in the pits. If it's busy you may have to park on the grass before the tunnel and walk to the pits.

I think turn 2  or the hill between 5 and 6  are good spots to watch. You can drive your car right up to the fence.

Pastizzi Racing at Eastern Creek

It was a great day.

I was nervous about piloting my beetle around at such high speeds.

I got to the track, well the queue outside the track, about 7 am and pulled up directly behind Jak's beetle. It was interesting to compare the two cars. It was the first time we've parked our cars together since Jak painted his gunmetal grey. His paint job is much darker. It's more sinister with the window tint and the black racing wheels.

After scrutineering Jak and I drank our strong coffees and had a couple of cheese pastizzis. Then a third VW turned up owned by a guy named Troy (I think). His nicely presented dark green beetle apparently has a fuel injected 1955cc engine which sounds sweet. He and Jak were in the blue group.

All up there were about 100 competitors. The field was made up of Lotus Elise/Exige, Triumph TR7s, MGs, Morgans, Mk2 and XJ6 Jags and a wide variety of other British cars, one of which was the same brand as my coffee machine, a Sunbeam.

I was in the white group. White was the slowest group and there were 2 or 3 white groups and about 40% of the competitors were in this group. With 16 cars on the track each time there was a lot of traffic. On my second run I got caught in a queue of 9 cars within a lap. So I dropped back to about 40 kmph let everyone get ahead, then gunned it into the final few turns and gave my lap time a good wriggle, but I caught an MX5 in turn 5 which killed my exit speed.

For the next 2 sessions I managed to be at the front of my group and got a clear run. Nobody caught me all weekend.

Unfortunately I couldn't crack the 2 minute mark. I came close with a PB of 2:00.14 into a stiff headwind. My previous best was a 2:00.3 in the Dutton rally which came on a day there was no wind and I was really comfortable with the car having driven it solidly for the previous 2 days of the 3 day event.

A few more laps around there and a bigger ring and pinion with some suspension tweaks and the sub 2 minute time looks quite achievable.

What a blast though. It really gets the adrenalin pumping, even in a car that doesn't feel like it has that much power. I managed to spin it 180 degrees at turn 6. At least I was trying. I think I gave it a pretty good crack.

Best of all the car had no problems. The oil catch can managed to solve any breather issues. That was the problem that cut my last run at the creek short.

yeah Wakefield onto the straight Paul.well onto the power there and a bit of opposite lock by the looks.....i have a disc of photos to send to you as well

yes Craig.....tyres have marks up to rims edge, front and back..........they are small on the rims and unbelievable they don't break the bead off yes......interestigly, the intermediate tyres do the same thing on the cookie cutters tho

we needed to play with so much on the day it wasn't funny, unfortunately all our time was spent bleeding brakes (sorry Paul )

those tyres are definately shot after Raleigh so new ones in order. not sure how they came to end up with Jeff, but something about being for formula holden (maybe) and for sure too soft in the side wall. ..........i'll make sure they're right this time, well as best as someone who still don't know shiz anyways

Nice shot of the notch.

I don't think the car is missing out on front end grip by having that wheel in the air.

I was going to comment on the rear.

What hot tyre pressures are you running?

I've found 32 works in the rear of my car. I started dropping it at Eastern Creek which caused me to start seesawing at the wheel as the sidewall was falling over which would've been around 26 or 27 hot. I guess it would've looked something like your car.

Did I hear something about converting the notch back to VW power?

yeah it's a cool shot CT.....tyre pressures cold in the high teens, coming back 6psi more hot.

got to admit i don't know enough on those sorts of things, it's just been a haul and then some to get it so pressures are high on the list. and yes i know that sounds stupid but in reality if the car is not running hard, there is no point having anything more than square wheels on it :fakesniff:

anyways, as you have described, the car was needing a lot of steering input at Wakefield. we were having a good look at those tyres at Raleigh 2010 and discussing what we were seeing. i know soem people run as low as single digit PSI in AVONS!

" back to aircooled"....there is an oxy boxer motor long block that we would like to finish off for this car yes (supercharged, intercooled, EFI)........but in reality it prolly won't happen till something goes bang in the subie motor or the set up is a lot more developed, even then with an increasing number of drivers in the HELLBUG camp., we will look at doing another couple of cars before we change this one. the good go gear is there, it just needs someone to piece it all together

the notch has been the only race car that Jeff has owned that turns up to consecative events with no development in between :tu:.........that record is over now. i want to go at LEAST five seconds quicker at Wakefield 2011 if all the plans come to fruition. i'll need to start soon :dork:
