Just reread thread and add.

Type3disease, sorry if I was too hard on you, your post sounded to me with your 'god only knows' to be so sceptical.......so have a couple of bags of crete.

The answers given on ebay to peoples questions regarding originality all make sense to me.

Be a nice purchase.

Here is another two bobs worth on this topic.

October 1952 brought many changes to the Beetle as a result of a worldwide Quality Improvement program commenced by Wolfsburg in April 1952 and finishing in mid 1954. The late 1952 model (as distinct from the early 1952 had many changes including;
1.Syncro on 2nd,3rd and 4th
2.Redesinged instrument panel
3.Vent wing added to doors
4 Rim sizes reduced down to 15 inch
5.New side body moldings introduced
6.Rear boot handle made into a T piece
7.Front boot handle modified and made longer
8.Access plate dropped from luggage area under carpet
9.Torsion bars reduced from 25mm to 24mm
There were many others.

Late 1952 vehicles commenced with chassis # 1-0397023

I see the seller states the "2'" in the chassis # 1-2340509
id difficult to read. If this # "2" is really an "0" and I suspect it is, then this is a mid to late produced 1952 vehicle albeit with a number of late model parts including
-chrome on the rear split windows
-vent wings on door.
-heart tail lights

The real giveaway to me would be
1. the location of the inside reading light and if it was sitting above the split window at rear of the vehicle

I dont have any concern this is a genuine split.

The motor looks like a 1954 model as best I can tell.

I think Phil might be on the money with his comments around the CKD production in South Africa. It happened here in Clayton so why not South Africa.
My call is a pre October 1952 production.

thanks countrybuggybill this is the sorta stuff I wanna see and read

would love to know your source internet or books? if you're happy to share - this is very handy info in helping me answer questions about my own car - and shed some light on this one for sale

I'd genuinely like to invest in this one too and am just trying to get ahead of the 8 ball on it so I know what I am or not in for... (not that my budget will neccissarily see me successful - fingers crossed)

thanks again Mattberry a bigger man might apologies without the concrete comments - so you read my question wrong - mate don't be hard on yourself - thats the thing with the internet you don't always hear the tone or pitch of someones voice to determine what angle they might be coming from... but thats cool mate you're only human too...!

The Samba is a good starting point and a good 'general' reference, but you have to remember that it's a US site and is designed for VWs sold on the US market. The Samba doesn't know about Australian-made VWs - nor South African ones. The Samba's year-by-year changes, chassis numbers, engine codes and paint/trim info is often not correct for non-US cars.

For German year-by-year changes, as Bill has detailed, the very best source is a book series called 'Kafer - Eine Dokumentation' by Heinz Rudiger Etzold. It was published in the '80s, in four volumes. There was an English translated edition called the 'Beetle Chronicles', produced by Safer Motoring Magaine (UK), edited by Robin Wager, although I think they only translated the first three. Volume 1 lists EVERY CHANGE made on the Wolfsburg production line, with dates / chassis numbers. Awesome, but keep in mind this is for German-made VWs. They may not be applicable to Australian, South African, Mexican and Brazilian Beetles, depending on the year.

Keep an eye on Ebay - do a search on 'Etzold' - and they sometimes pop up. This is a typical listing - would be great to get all four (139 Euro)...

I'd suggest that the factory publication 'Progressive Refinements' would be a better source, as that is where Etzold got his data from. I have both publications and I find Progressive Refinements has more detail. It doesn't list every change (i.e from the VJUR BR2 to VJUR BR3 distributor around Feb 54), and there are a couple of very minor errors - but it is as good as you are going to get 60 years on. But as you have stated, it is only correct for German made or CKD cars.

It is available in the interweb if you have a bit of a search.
