Hi

A guy I knew built a 4wd off road buggy and he grafted a tailshaft output to a Beetle box and he also used Morris 1100 front hubs on a 1500 Beetle front end. A superbug would be a lot easier to make 4wd, you could use Golf front struts.

Thanks Steve, I was talking in the chatroom one night (months ago) about the prospect of having an extra output out through the front of the gearbox and you've just answered my question! :D:thumb

Hi

That post with subi heads on the 4wd Beetle, that guy used a modified kombi trannie with his 4wd. You can see a picture at Monsterbuses site http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/1811/  Click on the bugs icon and you will get to it, I think its 3rd one along.

Hi

I just found an article on the Kommandeur in an old Aussie mag called Treads, no date but it has road tests on Mokes. I could scan it and send it to you if you want.

Hi Marcel,
it has a Baja kit on front but has fully enclosed engine bay ('68 deck lid and valance with 170mm trimmed of the bottom of valance and gaurds. The wheels are 15x6.5(140mm rear offset) with 235/75 rears and 215/75 fronts. It handled the desert like it was born there (better than the 4x4s that were with us). We carried 170lts of fuel, 80lts water, Engel fridge, dual batteries, camping gear, 2 spare wheels and were totally inderpendent as we had to do 3000ks of the 7000k trip on our own. We had a great time.
Attached are a couple of photos out in the Simson desert (on top of Big Red and crossing Lake Popel).

Doug Sweetman Mentioned a fellow in W.A that made a Type82e, I think he is refering to a member of the Afrika Korp Reenactment group the Aufklärungs Kompanie (mot) 580

Scary or just downright ignorant?

Why are these guys Scary?? It's non Political & just a hobbie, with out Reenactors many of these vehicles would have been turned into Beer cans long ago (steel type) The hobbie isn't for the faint hearted, flakes, nut jobs & neo nazis (non of these have the dedication or finances to rebuild historical vehicles) Do you think they drag Tanks etc out of museums to make films like Saving Private Ryan & Band of Brothers? no they were all Privately owned, who do you think portrayed the SS in SPR? it was a UK based reenactment group called Second Battle Group who brought their own Tigers, Assault guns, Kettenrad & Halftracks for Speilburg to use...
But then i suppose collecting Beer cans is a hobbie too!
BTW...no i don't own or wear a NAT-ZEE uniform, i wouldn't be dumb enough to stand in public & be ridiculed by the illinformed ignorant masses, funny though how the "public" are the ones throwing all the Nat-Zee salutes & the poor SOB reenactor has to hang his head in shame!

Don't get me wrong Kubel, I'm not knocking the hobbie. Its just that dressing up like a Nazi is not my cup of tea. Sure for films and things fine, but as a thing to do on the weekends for leisure , I dont think so.
Just my opinion!!!

Good point about the movie extras tho, I hadn't thought about that.

As for me, I prefer to forget about the negative associations with the VW Beetle. Too many un-educated, immediatly associate the VW with Hitler. Hitler used this vehicle as a politcal tool. The English gave it life after the war ended.

My VW interest is due to the many positive associations around these little cars.
- unlike any car ever made before or after
- the beetle was the corner stone of the rebuilding of post war german economy
- the beetle raised the bar for all small cars in the areas of handling and reliabilty.
- was sold by the millions despite being small , ugly (compared to US cars) because it met a basic need - transportation.

And there is a really fascinating Marketing history around these cars.

Kubel, I didnt say that I though they were ugly. I luv the beetle shape. I have one.

For the tyres, try an agricultral machinery company or turf machine company. I've seen tyres like these on trenching machines.
