i did one (rural welding it was called) during the Hawke years. if your keen to learn, then they are very worthwhile. But I dont think they run things like this anymore.

Could be wrong though.

In the Menzies years, at Ultimo Tech, we learned oxy welding - there was no MIG or TIG..........Stop laughing, you lot!

I learnt oxy & stick. Mig's where still few and far between as far as home workshops where concerned.

used to be able to handle an oxy pretty well, but the costs of cylinder hire & consumables got me in the end.

If I was using it every day I would still have a set ready to go though.

hear what you're saying SAS, we're a BOC agent and cost of renting cylinders is not cheap, especially if you have oxy & actylene.

For the Brissy guys, I'll talk to some of my suppliers and also the local trade college who have a really excellent welding facility and see what I can come up with.

I reckon a 2 or 3 night course so people can go home try out the new techniques and then return for fine tuning etc.

will post more during the week. Also, to save confusion I'll post details for Brissy under a new threads so this doesn't get to confusing.

I might be interested but due to work commitments would need to know dates a long way out to be able to say whether I could make it.
Same story for me on oxy acetylene, one small bottle costs enough for the mig, let alone another two!

Yes oxy welding has advantages, and as said costs of bottles are a factor and can take longer to become efficient with, this is why this workshop will be based on mig welding which more people have access to and can get faster results with.

As far as when these workshops will be available, we are still working things out. So far the plan is to offer a weekend workshop over saturday and sunday dates still to be confirm. But still weeks away as we need to set up a venue and facilities and finalise details, we hope to contact each of you and offer dates. No one will miss out as there will be more than one workshop offered, and if successfull we can then offer advance workshops moving into tig welding for those that are interested and other areas of welding and potentially metal fabrication.

As this post was put forward to only get a feel if people would be interested in such a workshop, the responce has been fantastic and we are now putting in motion a plan to make this happen for you, the last thing we want is to dissapoint those who will attend, I'm sure that anyone who comes along won't be dissapointed.

Keep the ideas coming and let us know of you interest in such a workshop so we can accommodate to your needs.

If you do a TIG one, particularly on welding aluminium, I am there. Just let me know when and where.

Yes Tig welding is on the cards, but we need to start somewhere, and that is with a form of welding most common and accesable to most people.

Most likely at this point in time, again just putting it out there to see how viable this could be. If it comes off theres every chance that evening workshops could be available.

Well there is definately someone out there somewhere that could benefit from a basic welding course.
Check out this muffler I replaced on a car a few days ago.

This boys and girls is how you do not weld

Forget duckshit, this is duck with explosive diarrhea.

To add insult to injury instead of welding on another muffler hanger rod at the front they just wrapped fencing wire around the pipe and looped it through the rubber hanger.

And best part, this car was passed for a pink slip 6 weeks ago....
Mind you by the womans ex husband

I wont tell you about the other dodgy stuff I found with it.
