Definitely.
Just about everyone I spoke to on the day mentioned this.

There were just as many, if not more impressive cars in the car park. Enticing people to bring their VW's into the show without having to enter them in a competition would be a big plus. Will mean more revenue also I'd think.
I know personally I'm not going to bring my VW next year just to sit in the judging queue for over an hour as I'm not in contention to win anything and the extra cost for that "privilege" isn't worth the hassle.
I had a good time though and thank all the organisers for putting on what seemed like a relatively successful event.

The car park car show is not on unless all of the above want to join the Club

Otherwise you wont be cover for Public Liability etc etc etc

then you have to make signs for the difffernt areas and get there at 6.00 am and stay all day to arrange the parking in specialised areas Go right ahead should only take about 6 to 10 people to run it

now Tiguan racing can you lock those in 4 wheel drive or are they like a Syncro that would be nice around the top loop of the track i am learning the track and can now take that top loop in 3rd nearly flat out with backing off GREAT FUN

I don't have public liability if i park anywhere in thew car park and i wouldnt expect it parking in a sectioned off area of the carpark. I'd be happy to assist setting it up

Is it crazy?

Organisers would be crazy to ignore it. Let's face it, in cold hard reality, the majority of patrons are only there because it is the only reasonably sized VW event that is put on. People through the gate year after year isn't always an endorsement - much of it it just marquee loyalty.

Bored children means cranky parents. The kids and partner don't come next year. The year after that neither parent or kids come through the gate...

I saw a lot of people leaving around 10am. Including some people I encouraged to come have a look. Why? The drive in judging probably... you can't look at the cars as they are queued up and the look is pretty quick with those who have made it inside. Bye bye they go... Promotors got their bucks today, but they won't ever again.

Hi,

Guys, I help park the cars on Show day and let me give you an insight into the judging/ parking game...

Judges start at 7.30am for those who show up early. We must judge and park approx 250 cars. Now if we had 250 cars waiting for us ay 7.30am, we may be able to have them all in place when Joe Public turns up at 9am.

However, if show entrants are still turning up at 11am (and they do), how do we have them judged and in place by 10am before some people leave?

The logistics of the show mean that cars are still being entered and driven in up 'till 11am! If you want to see all the cars, don't show up until midday! We can't display cars that haven't turned up yet!

Also, people turn up at 10.30am and say, "can I park next to my buddy?", the one who turned up at 8am and is now surrounded by 50 other cars! If you want to park together, TURN UP TOGETHER.

My biggest concern on the day is trying to park cars while wading through the crowd to find a spot. If somebody's kid gets run-over, then we won't have a show. I would love to have all cars entered and parked by 9am so that everyone can see all the cars at the same time, but unless we insist on people showing up well before 9am, it ain't going to happen.

It takes time to judge and position cars, so unfortunately the show "builds" over the day until it ends and everyone buggers off in 10 mins!

Don't forget it takes a few minutes to judge each car, and there is around 250 to judge. Our judges do this in around 3.5 hours, and don't stop once for a break. If you turn up at 10am to be judged, you are going to have to wait!

Another common complaint is "why can't you park all the Beetle/Kombis/Type 3's/Karmann's, etc together?". I would love to. However, not everyone wants to park with the same car as theirs, and we don't know how many spaces to reserve for each type that may or may not show up!. Also, if we park all the Beetles in one place, and the crowd is trying to look at them, it is difficult to drive another Beetle THROUGH the crowd to park in the same area.

Please understand that we do the best we can to make EVERYONE happy, but we also need to look at the PRACTICAL side of running the show. The show for me dosen't start until the last car is parked at around 11am, and then I get to go look at what's left in the swapmeet!

Hi

Its nice to spend a day out with your kids but they can get bored at these sort of things, well maybe you could wait until they are a bit older, I like to stop and have chin wag and catch up VW friends, I guess that you are the same, the kids wouldn't appreciate that.

I dragged my teenage son out of bed at 5am to come to the nats with me to take a photo of every entrants car so that he could do slide show like last year of the winning cars, the projector died so we couldn't do it, we will be better prepared next year.

I would like to clear up a few misconceptions about this thread. in my Professional life I have been trained to accept all types of feedback it is free and you can accept it or decide to act upon it or not too. We are also trained to do a learning cycle where u look at the experience and what worked and what didn't and continue to make improvements.

It is all about continuous improvement and I would say most people here have made some good genuine comments and feedback.

Ok the judging looks to be an issue is there any consideration to judge the day before then park cars in order of merit in each class on the Sunday? This would reduce setup times on the Sunday, those at Wakefield would need to judge early Sunday morning but it would reduce the time for judging on Sunday although people would have to get there on both days.

Do not be discouraged by suggestions we all look forward to the Annual event we just want to see it become even more successful

Only judge the cars that are at Wakefield, that would help bump up attendance for the sprints......

Each year it is held in a different state (last year VIC) and its now building momentum amongst the EVO crowd as a "dont miss" event.

Would be good to have a VW event with the same format.

Isn't that what the Bug In does?

As a spectator I was blown away by the show, I used to get to the Nats when the gates opened but was always disapointed so now I don't rock up until after 10am. The swap meet blew me away, I have never seen that many vendors!

Yes the judging of cars coming through was slow, but owners should realise this and get there early, you know the show is on, you have had plenty of notice about it so why not prepare?

I am suprised that there haven't been other shows/cruises etc startup to coincide with the nats.

As somebody said, I used to go with my wife and kids but they were getting bored so now I come along to the show. It is the only interstate show I attend. I even skipped it a few years as it is usually the same cars year after year with a few new ones thrown in. The formate hasn't changed either so I check out the swap meet, look for new cars and leave.

I also agree that the Nats is really the only noteworthy show in the southern NSW area, so I attend to get my VW fix for the year.

Club presence wasn't as noticable this year and I only spotted one person from my home club which was dissapointing.

All in all I applaud the people behind the nats but also agree it needs a little freshen up. The number of entrants was awesome but spectators also need to be accomadated too.

Sorry for the long and disjointed post but that is my 2 cents worth.

Ian.

Here's a novel idea. Why don't you have two lanes for showcars and two different entry prices.

One for those who wish to line up for hours, to have their car judged so they have a chance to get a plastic trophy and feel validated for all their hard work and/or money spent. (My apologies to all you Trophy Hounds:blush:)

The other lane can be for those who simply wish to participate, which adds to the numbers (which seem to be getting smaller) and don't require validation (from someone they probably don't even know) that their ride is the best for that category. They could drive straight in (slowly so as not to hit all the children trying to throw themselves under a moving vehicle...) and park up, thus reducing the amount of vehicles needing to be judged.

Have any of the organisers ever considered asking the entrants whether they want their car judged? Why is it mandatory?

Why cant the shed be filled from one end, as people park judging begins, and judging closes at 11am. $30 to get judged, get a judge me sticker, $20 to park and get a dont judge me sticker... those who dont want to pay $20 pay $10 and leave their car in car park...

And one last thing,

I don't believe anyone here is saying anything bad about the Nats just their opinions. I think we are better off having the nats than having nothing, so we are greatfull to the club and the efforts of the volunteers who help run the event.

As a noob to the scene, and also to loose my VW National cherry, I thought the day was a great one all round.... However, I was about to say the same thing as *DOKADave* and *byronbus*.

I had no interest at all in entering the comp for a trophy. I just wanted to park my car inside, and participate in the day by talking to other people and getting advice, as I knew my car was 'different', and it is a good way to actually gain info by looking, pointing and touching what is in front of you, not what is parked outside in the car park.

Driving out, we saw some amazing vehicles in the car park, with no-one around to ask questions of or to have a closer look (without looking that little bit suss..Maybe it was my hoodie  and coathanger that looked suss....jokes).

I think, if it is possible, to have two lanes, and two different stickers. One for judging, and one for general 'gawking'. Charge the general cars 20 nikka, instead of the 30. We 'non participants/only gawkers' could park outside on the grass, or some where else inside the grounds that suits.

Just my two cents from fresh eyes.
