Alright, so stock hubcaps, steel four lug wheels, some gloss black paint and whitewalls.
That'll be the wheel look for Zelda.
I'm really tempted to lower the front and rear, maybe even get a narrowed beam for her to point her nose down a little more.
Would definitely give here a menacing stance, but then again, it'd take away from the sleeper look I want.
I'm really excited about putting normal rear guards back on her. She deserves them that is for sure.

Thanks man! I'll post some photos when I get the hubcaps and wheels.
Hopefully I hear back about these rear guards, it'll be great to get my hands dirty with them.

strut bug mate, no such thing as a narrowed beam for us
your alternative is coilovers, either vforce in sydney, topline in the usa, kerscher-tuning in germany, jefferys vws in japan, depends how much $$$
you have to throw at it to get the height you want. just dont go cutting springs PLEASE
see mustards thread on here for the cheaper way to lower with struts, or helbus' thread for re-welding cups for cheaper again

Aha alright, thanks STIDUB, seems I shall look into the alternatives, however I don't know just yet as to whether or not I should lower her.
Want to make her look like a sleeper, so basically stock on the outside, and then grab a new 1916cc engine for her.
Hopefully this will complete her saga, but for now it is just getting the exterior up to the stock looking standard, then I'll work on the interior
as it definitely needs a new look. Back to original as well.
Does anyone know what the original stereo looked like in the padded dash? Or if there are "plugs" for the padded dash as I want to install the head
unit in the glovebox and grab a rear parcel shelf and "hide mount" the speakers.

You will need to lower a fraction, and add some under the skin suspension improvements.
They are too much of a handfull with a high performance engine and all stock suspension.
It seems to be Lbug owner etiquette to throw away the radio plate, most of mine have been missing.
They are just a clip in plate that matches the switch panel
Here's a stock one and another I opened up for a DIN cradle.

Alright, sounds like that is what I'll need to do then, as long as it doesn't look too different from the exterior as to what a stock one would look
like, then I'm happy.
Now, the taillights for mine are the elephant feet, what were the lights before they came in? In the photo you showed me of the wheels, the tan
looking bug, I want those taillights for her. Or, do you recommend I just go back to stock completely and get the elephant feet ones?
As for the plate, how hard are they to come by? Might need to grab one soon as am looking at doing a lot next weekend when it comes to actually doing
everything to her that I have planned...

Your only hope with a radio plate is second hand, they are pretty hard to come by.
Those oval shaped lights are early 60s up to 67.
There was one more shape in between them and elephants feet called tombstones but which ever tickles your fancy,
only consideration is your bug originally had reverse lights so it should by rights still have them now to meet ADRs.
just the old Toranas used to light up the indicators for reverse lights.

Alright, best put something up for WTB.
Alright, seems I'll have to get elephant feet then, if it is requirements for them to have reverse lights, I might as well just do it.
Yeah, currently the lights don't do anything when I'm in reverse :P

You're not limited to elephants feet, the earlier tombstones have reverse lights, but you will only find the actual bulb holders in 72s, 68-71 just
have the provision there for it.

STIDUB,
Would I need those if I am to put on the tombstone guards?
Trying to source everything, really hoping I can get some.
Lights I can easily order off of a site if the guards don't have them...

If you're finding it difficult to find stuff, I could sell you my spare pair of rear guards with lights. The guards would need some work to get them
ready for painting but they're usable. You can buy new reproduction lenses with the clear reversing light part as well. The wiring is pretty simple,
just 5 wires per side.

Yes, i was reffering to the tombstone lights that you want to use...
the light housing is a bolt on item with the base, lense & a plate in the middle that holds the bulb holders & works as a reflector, more
often than not the reverse light hole will be blank/empty, grab a spare plastic bit to clip in & it will be fine, oh and you need the reversing
switch on the gearbox nose cone to run the signal for the lights from, also a hit & miss item if its actually there or not ive found
ill get pics of what i mean later if your stuck

Went for a cruise last night in Zelda, had some fun with mates from school, grabbed a coffee on Norwood.
While driving down The Parade, I saw this beetle parked on the side of the road. Me being me, I pulled over and decided to take a happy snap of the
two parked next to each other.

Seems Zelda is on her way out.
Was reversing out of the drive way, put her into first, and bang, her gearbox went.
I don't know if it is definitely her gearbox or her differential, but she doesn't want to move forward, or anywhere for that matter without my
aid.
Have to organise a tow-truck to get her down to GHR Thursday afternoon.
Oh well

I thought I best take some photos of Zelda while she's lying in her current coffin. It kinda makes me sad, I can't believe how attached and
dependant I am...
Anyway, check out my mad parking skills while I was pushing her on my lonesome.
I took a photo of her donk to see if there was any discrepiencies, but I'm fairly certain it either has something to do with the syncros in the
gearbox, the drivetrain or the actual gearbox itself.
Hopefully booking my tow truck tonight with a mates help, then I just have to wait and see what Siggi says. It is somewhat depressing, seeing her all
helpless and not being driven, just parked on the side of the road...
I guess this gives me a chance as to decide what happens next. The plan is to keep Zelda instead of selling her and getting myself a new one. In turn,
I'm thinking that what I do is I actually spend, if necessary, a decent amount on getting a new gearbox in there (not second hand), one that'll be
all ready for the 1916cc Stan Pobjoy motor that I want to put in her.
But what it comes down to in the end is costs. Depending on how much a new gearbox will be depends on how long until I can buy the new donk for
her.
After the Pobjoy goes in, I'll be upgrading the rear brakes to discs. I'll no doubt have to work on the suspension as well, so what do you recommend
I do suspension wise?
Basically I just need to get an idea of costs and how much I should be budgeting for. Am hoping to get it all done by the end of November before I
head to Europe!

Wow, so you're still at school, travelling to Europe at the end of the year and yet you still want to go down the road of a complete new engine and
transmission within the next few months?! Unless you're made of money, I'd be advising you to just patch up the old girl with the minimum possible,
perhaps a used transmission, then save your money for the trip. You don't want to have to sell your car to fund the trip.
Okay, now that the sensible advice has been dispensed, some budgeting! For a new transmission rebuilt by a workshop I'd be budgeting at least a
couple of thousand dollars, although I'm not sure as I've never had one done. A new hotted-up engine will cost you from about $4000-$5000 minimum.
Add in some change for suspension, brakes and a little bit of bodywork/interior and you won't have much change from $10,000 to get your car to the
standard which you're aiming for. Not to mention the fact that the installation will cost big dollars if you have to pay a mechanic to do it. Now, if
that seems like too much for you, have a look around the forums and classifieds websites and see how cheap some already restored Beetles are going. If
you have the ready cash and can find the right car, it's much cheaper to let someone else build it and then buy it second hand. Conversely, if you
build up yours and sell it you will lose about half your money.
What's the answer to all of this? I can offer advice based on what I've done. First, I got a stock Beetle and enjoyed it. Drove it everywhere,
entered motorsport events and took it on road trips to the Yorke Peninsula. I did all the maintenance and mechanical work on it myself, with help and
advice from knowledgeable friends and relatives. Then, when I could afford it, I found a used 1600cc twin-port engine in good running condition for
$800. Installed it myself at home with a mate's help. It provided a good improvement in performance over the single-port and was great value for
money. Zelda is in better condition than my old 1500 was, and I loved driving it for about two years until I crashed the poor thing and wrote it off.
The moral of the story? Stock bugs are good cheap fun. The faster you want to go, the more expensive it rapidly becomes!

Ah, I sure am still in school, it is somewhat a ball breaker. The trip to Europe at the end of the year is courtesy of the fact that it is my Mum's
40th and she wanted to celebrate it in France or something, I'm just tagging along in the eyes of the rest of the family...
I have to heed your advice, it sounds exactly like what everyone in my family has said and I guess hearing it from another volkswagen enthusiast, well
it just settles it.
I'm thinking about doing exactly what you did then, search around a 1600cc dual port in good running order and swap her over. I feel bad for my Dad
however, as he paid for Zelda thinking she already had a 1600cc dual port engine in her. How difficult was it to take out the 1500 and dump the 1600
in her? I'm assuming that it could very well be a two day to three day job if I wanted to do it myself with a couple of mates, maybe even my Dad
could lend a hand if I can find an engine in good enough condition and at the right price...
Stock bugs really are fun and very cheap to run. If Zelda was somewhat more reliable, I'd not have such big dreams I guess. I am somewhat
disappointed that I might not be able to make it to the Bay to Birdwood this year in her, but I guess it all depends on whether or not I have enough
money and enough time to do what I want to do with the rear end, wheels and such during the holidays. Looks like I'm going engine hunting though,
might have to take a look at the classifieds on here and then hit up Gumtree as well.

Dylan,
It's a 1500 singleport donker, I'm thinking I just go to a 1600cc dual port, single carby donk and then upgrade to a dual carby setup when I can
afford it.

VW engines are very easy to swap. All you need is a big trolley jack and a pair of big axle stands. The first time I ever swapped one it took me a
whole day with one mate's help. The second time around we knew what we were doing and it only took about 30 minutes to swap the engine from my
crashed white bug to the new red bug.

What sort of "research" did you do before you did your first swap?
