Just an update - Michael got the boots that Lee (68autobug) suggested and he fitted them Friday. I'm always telling my sons that the most important tool is the workshop manual, anyway he grabs one of my old tatty ones and when the driveshaft is in pieces he reads to me that VW advised leaving the convex/concave washer off when servicing the cvs'. Now this is only in one of three manuals I have, Well yesterday he went up the beach and as expected drove like a nutcase, got home and we checked the boots and everything looks fine so all I can surmise is that maybe the circlip wasn't fitted perfectly because the washer limited the movement when putting it together and probably came off then allowed the shaft too much movement thereby splitting the boots. Just strange that leaving the washer off is mentioned in only one manual?! Any constructive comments welcome.

One car at a time Nick, although I am waiting for a rocker for the buggy and it needs that windscreen, all in good time though.

Oh well, another boot has split already so that lasted about a month. It did come with a 12 month waranty so we'll have to see what happens now:grind:

Any ideas would be very welcome as I have a very grumpy son who's now pissed off with anything VW at the moment. I may suggest the coloured ones just to keep him occupied:rolleyes:

We've tried Wurth boots that are practically the same (very stretchy material) they didn't last any longer.

its strange that with all the front wheel drive & 4WD vehicles using rubber or polypropylene boots on the roads now...
that don't seem to have problems.???

although years ago I had problems with new boots fitted to a Magna .. and I then replaced them with some very thick rubber made in USA boots.. don't know what brand they were...

cheers

LEE

what about in the old days when leather was a favorite material in car and truck bits... lol ?
[Kangaroos weren't mentioned]
[and no harm was done to any animal in this thread... lol]

They don't run high angles all the time, for a front wheel drive, it'd be like driving on full lock all the time.

I have no qualms with hurting any animals so long as my son stops bloody moaning and Matts' suggestion so far is the only one I haven't tried yet:smirk: other than the coloured boots.....I wonder how long catskin boots would last as I'm sure the wife wouldn't miss one of them AND I'd be doing something for the local wildlife:D
